What's the likelihood of new topics getting noticed and why?

I'm just wondering why certain topics seem to get more attention than others?

And what topics do you think seem to be most popular and why?

I mean, I know this is going to get at least one view, because it's in sugarcube corner - which is the general chat area of the forums, but i've seen several topics, either RP plannings, Art threads or other works like that, that seem to go by completely unnoticed.

Personally I have created one or two topics that have had no views or replies (duh) for quite a long time -  so naturally im just curious as to what makes you want to read a topic, and what puts you off?

It'd be really awkward if a topic about this had 0 replies :P

Well, the title plays a big role in getting people to "open link in new tab" when they refresh the mane page and see the new topic list. Granted, the person creating the topic is also a factor, and someone who is more well known will probably get replies faster. Generally, people will tend to reply to a topic only if they can directly relate to the subject matter, since the 100 char minimum more or less denies the possibility of any one-liner 'cool.' kind of replies. Sometimes something has already been said by the first or second reply-er so you'll get situations where there's 1 reply and a couple of brohoofs and then the topic dies down after that.

Only to be revived weeks later by an enthusiastic new member

Ahahaha I love this forum  ^_^

Signature to come soon. I think. Yeah. Once I think up a nice one. Or when someone makes one for me. Damn it. I need more time to draw and animate poni. >_<

Ha! Guilty of topic revival myself

And that all makes sense. I've very often found myself looking at a topic, starting to type what I want, only to fill 40 characters. Then I just dont reply, because it's just not worth stretching out what I have to say over another 60+ characters.

I suppose as well this could be a question I answered myself, if I see alot of replies to a topic, im actually more likely not to look at it - simply because I have to read EVERY post before I reply. It gets annoying when there are 2000+ replies. I'm looking at you signature thread...

On the same note though, if there's something with 0 replies i'll more often than not try and reply with something, even if it's just to get the poor sod who started it something to go for. It's really sad though when I see a RP with no views and no replies, and see the date was days ago. How much work must go into that just for nopony to check it out. Makes me sad thinking about it.

It happens quite often in Fan Art as well :P

Thankfully I've only had one or two art threads that I've posted which have garnered a grand total of 0 replies T_T Nowadays I just try to predict what people would like and am thankful if they at least brohoof :)

Speaking of titles, I'm still waiting to see if someone manages to pull off a OMG SEASON 4 SPOILERS in the title and then starts talking about what they had for lunch in the thread before being pwned by the mods

Well, if someone is very popular, it will mpst definitely get replies.

Bad art has a higher chance of replies due to critiques. You get more replies asking for critics.

An interesting or controversial topic will almost always gst replies.

Adding a poll lessens replies.

I think that's about it.

What makes you think adding a poll lessens replies?

I'm just curious :)

I never even really notice the poll until I view the topic :3

That's probably down to me not reading the titles properly before I jump into the conversation...

Well, there isnt as much of an insentive to reply when one can just take two seconds to vote. Thats a bit dependant on the topic actually.

Makes sense. I guess it can boil down to the person too, if I vote I prefer to give a reason as to why i've chosen that particular choice, not just vote and leave it there. But like I say, that's just me.

I think the poll might encourage viewers to just cast their vote and then leave the topic, or something like that. If the poll doesn't have enough options, then some will take the trouble to type it out in a reply. Though the 100 char min again kind of  puts a cap on that, so yeah. The poll might indeed have a negative effect on the number of replies a thread gets. Unless of course, the subject-matter of the thread is that good  :o

  • 1 year later...

Well, I noticed this thread after almost 2 years later!

I would say Cloudsdale Colosseum/Forum Games/Forum Lounge is probably the most popular because of the no 20 character limit and most topics are pretty fun, like posting a picture in response to another picture, posting meme's, asking the user above you a question, date the user above you, etc.
