Thoughts on Dead Island?

Recently, I started playing Dead Island, and I can't decide whether or not it's a good game, or even if I really like it for that matter (believe me, those are two different things). So, I was wondering what everyone else thought about it.

Personally, I think they wanted to make a class/level system like borderlands, and they did pretty well in that regard, although from what I've seen, the special abilities are basically all the same thing.

I like the weapon creation and upgrade system and the fact that you have to scavenge for parts and any objects that can potentially be used as a weapon, which makes it seem more realistic, I guess (I'm not sure if that's really the right word, but whatever).

One thing that annoys me is that throwing weapons doesn't damage them, but swinging them does. It just doesn't make much sense to me, but it's a pretty minor thing really. Also, I think the weapons break down too quickly, to the point that it's unrealistic. But then again, I've never tried beating a zombie to death with a paddle before so what do I know?

Anyway, I was wondering if anybody else had any thoughts on it.

In my opinion it lacked variety as in if you weren't fetching something for somebody you were escorting another person and then there was the occasional defend mission it was just boring to me as soon as I was done with it I returned it. It isn't a good or bad game just in the middle enough to entertain you for a while but grows boring after a bit

I really do like the modding system in the game for PC. But, some things that annoy me is how many times you have to hit a zombie for them to die pretty frustrating.

Yeah, it gets really annoying when you're only fighting one zombie, and you've got them on the ground, but you have to kick them several dozen times before they actually die. I mean you could use a weapon kill them a little bit faster, but then you either waste ammo or damage a melee weapon when you could have won without it. I have noticed that just punching things without a weapon is surprisingly effective, although it drains your stamina very quickly.

It was okay...until you get to the city. And then it's just a bunch of bullshit. You basically get attacked by hordes of zombies every 2 seconds and die in like 2 hits, so you are basically just dying over and over. That completely ruined the game for me.

Why I play as Xian. Her head stomp ability instantly finishes zombies on the ground.(And her extra stamina is nice.) I haven't gotten far into this game yet, but it seems good so far. If you have it for PC, we should co-op sometime.

Yeah, I just started over as Xian, because I realized that most of the best weapons I find are sharp weapons. Also, I'm looking forward to the head stomp thing saving me a lot of time. I'm not putting points into that skill tree until I get lockpicking, though.

I have the game of the year edition (it was the only version I could find), and I was wondering: who called it the game of the year? I assume someone must have, but I don't know why. It's an okay game, but it's not game of the year material.

I haven't gotten that far yet, in fact I didn't even know there was a city, but I can see how that might be the case. The game is obviously meant to be played in co-op, which is an issue for someone like me, who doesn't generally like to play online.

I beat the game two or three times as Purna.

Incredibly fun throughout, nice weapons, hard at some points, good storyline (dat' ending). Although, that's about all I could handle was three times. It gets far too repetitive and annoying.

I found the game fun, yet easy at the same time.

I was playing with a friend, we were just mowing down zombies like nothing. Quite funny though, blunt + blades I find is a great combination

I liked it. It was a fun zombie RPG but it lacked some things, and felt rushed. It was a fun game, but it was lacking story wise.

*Spoilers* (Select text in order to see it, I made it white so it won't spoil the game)

We never really concluded the storyline. You basically do what you expect and leave, but that's it, you don't even learn what happens to other survivors. Especially the people from the very beginning, we never get any idea what happens to them afterwards.

Though the "kicking" was flawed out, I still deeply enjoyed the game. I love some of the mods you can get for your weapon, like toxic or electric mod.(Or explosive mod if you wanted to get messy, lol!) One thing that bothered me though was the Trailer-actual game relationship. The trailer had almost nothing to do with the game, though I will still say the game had a pretty good story line.

I don't think I've ever seen the trailer, but somehow that doesn't surprise me.

Yes, yes it is. I've already spent about an hour just standing over zombies and kicking them until they finally decide to die.

Once you get a decent shotgun, it's game over.

You can literally one shot nearly everything in the game except for the final boss. (If you get a headshot from up close)

Not so hard with a little practice.

It was a cool concept in design that didn't really work in practice. The RPG elements felt forced and unnecessary. The controls felt overly clunky. The graphics would have been great if not for the insane amount of popup that occurred throughout the game. The PC port felt extremely rushed and half-assed, like too many PC ports do these days.

I finished it up and uninstalled it promptly. Bearable for a single run, but definitely would not play again.

Yes, yes it is. I've already spent about an hour just standing over zombies and kicking them until they finally decide to die.

Actually, now that I remember, have you heard of or have the "Left hand of Glova"? If not, it is a easter egg item you must find and basically you can electrify any zombie you touch. Also, as you level up, you earn the "Stomping" ability, so once zombies get on the ground you can 1 hit kill them.

Is it in the xbox360 version?

Yes it is, because I play it on xbox xD. Also I know for a fact that Sam also has the stomping ability, since I use him. As for the others, IDK. Edited by Retro✮Derpy

No, but it sounds insanely useful. Is it in the xbox360 version?

I think only Xian can get that. I'm not really sure, though. I haven't looked through the skill trees enough yet to really know.
