More Hits than you can fit on your iPod

Has the definition of a Hit Song changed in the last 20-30 years?

  1. 1. Do you believe that songs are now more publicly receivable, and thus Hit Songs are much more common and/or less meaningful?

    • Certainly. All times are changing, and so is music.

    • Somewhat. Times are changing, but music is still music, hits are still hits. There are more hits, but they have no less meaning than something several decades ago.

    • No. Music is just music. Hits were abundant in the past, and are abundant here. The only difference is the number of people listening.

  2. 2. Do you feel music and the way it is recieved by the public will be noticeably different in 10-20 years?

    • Definitely. Just as music has changed over the past years, it will without a doubt change in the near and far future.

    • Maybe. Music, like society and time can change is very different and sometimes abrupt ways. There is no way of telling whether or not music will change noticeably in the near or far future.

    • Doubtfully. Music has been a constant throughout the fifty years gone by, and although what we listen to may change, the way this music presents itself to society will remain the same.

Listening to music channel Channel V today, and I noticed that there were so many famous song popping up, all less than 6 months old. It made me wonder just how public music has become, and how much it has grown to be a part of society.

It seems like a new hit song pops up in the Charts at least every week.

We all have our favourite songs from the days gone by, be it A Beatles' 60's masterpiece, some soothing and wacky 70's David Bowie, or some rocking 80's Bon Jovi and Guns 'n' Roses. We all have those songs and albums that stick to heart, and know of those huge songs that hit the public in a storm.

But that's just it.

It feels like back then, when a song was a hit, it was a huge one. even the One-Hit Wonders. People listened to song, and it stuck with them. It feels as though these days, everything is a hit. If a song is heard, it's heard by everyone.

It seems to me that music has become so much more common in the last 10-20 years, to a point where almost every song is publicly noticed.

Does anybody else here feel the same way, or think I'm on to something similar? Do you believe that, music being so common has caused it to be less about a big super-hit that will stay with us for many, many years, and more about the song being for the here and now; instant content right here right now?
Or, do you have a differing opinion? Do you believe that nothing has changed as to what is a hit and what is 300 views on YouTube? Do you think that the only change is that a lot more people are around, and thus exposed to music?

What do you think?

music indeed has been more publicly noticed these days, because it's so much easier for something to become popular now. back then, when there was a trend of some kind, it was usually really big, but didn't last long, due to lack of widespreadness. now, if a new trend pops up, it's surely going to pop up all over the social networks on the internet now, or becoming memetic. with all of these social networks and such on the internet being able to be accessed from almost gosh darn everywhere, it's no wonder things get shared around much faster.

i wouldn't call it a bad thing that there's so much music coming out, though. gives more to choose from.
