My first four pencil sketches:

post-13039-0-13694500-1365196021_thumb.jpg

That's my first pencil drawing. Looks like she's got her neck broken img-1342352-1-biggrin.png

post-13039-0-98155100-1365334379_thumb.jpg

Rainbow dash. Her legs are awkward but I think it kinda suits this picture. She's got no wings because I've got no idea how to draw them when she's in such position.

Random pony.

I drew Queen Chrysalis today:

post-13039-0-25698700-1365368791_thumb.jpg

That's gonna be my 5th sketch. I'm mostly redrawing stuff now, just to get to know various perspectives etc. And to get used to holding a pencil, lol. I'm sorry for poor photos, but I haven't got a scanner and I've got to make them with a phone in bad lighting.

They are good starting points, though basicly what you need to learn is the anatomy of a pony, how many heads long certain parts, and how thick they are.

That will improve your awkwad legs, and broken neck, as well as having them in the right proportions.

keep it up and good luck ~desu!

Made some more today:

Sombra: (I think this is my best one so far)

post-13039-0-33586200-1365545242_thumb.jpg

Walking Rainbow Dash, this is my very first attempt at ponies in motion, and I think i've got it all wrong. There's something wrong with her face as well. And now I realized she's got no wings. This is actually my first drawing where I came up with the pose myself, other ones are all pretty much redrawn.

Any critique welcome.

That Sombra one's really good!

I have some suggestions for your poses. Take a look at this picture-

You see how they put a base kind of thing there for the legs? That's really helpful when it comes to drawings, so you can think up some more poses without difficulty. It looks a little complicated, I know, but that's how I've been doing it recently and my drawings have improved a fair bit. You don't have to do everything on there though, I found putting regular, basic lines before I do the legs is really helpful for posing and keeps them in good proportion. wink.png Just a suggestion, as it's something I do.

(But your Sombra drawing is still better than everything I've drawn combined. It's so perfect! XD) Not to mention your Chrysalis one. I can really see your improvements. Remember, practice makes perfect! biggrin.png

Hope this helped! smile.png

@,

Wow your 5/6 pictures show a really big improvement!  For first drawing they are all really good, you have everything there just working on proportions the (legs seem a bit thin? and look a little bit awkward (especially on pic 2), but that will come with practice).

Loving that sombre btw :D! The rainbow at the end is till feel the legs a re a bit thin at the top, specifically the back legs. The cutie mark is also slightly off, it should be rotated a little bit (and be a little bit smaller). The Mane is also a little bit off between where it joins with the body, the thin bit should angle up a little bit more and arc a bit, the mane starting higher on RD's flank.

Overall thought brilliant pictures :), With practice I can see you drawing perfect ponies very quickly :D!

I actually used that. I didn't put that skeleton thingy in my picture though. I'll try next time.

Thanks, I'll remember that. By mane you mean her tail, right? Yeah, it's hideous. I focused on legs too much and overlooked her tail ;p

Yeah I meant the tail (why i shouldn't post late at night). The shape of the legs was a lot better with RD though, it's not easy to get them to bend :).

It's been a week since I started drawing and I decided to redraw my first picture of fluttershy...

post-13039-0-10704700-1365716069_thumb.jpg

Head and neck are too big compared to the rest of the body, I tried to make her pose more frontal, and I failed miserably. Couldn't make those legs right. She's hideous. Still better than previous one though. At least I'm making some progress.

These are really good! There is room for improvement but they are really good for first sketches! I hope to see even more in the future!

Keep it up, your Sombra pic is a huge improvement. Just keep trying to replicate whatever reference you're using the best you can. I'd say use close up pics that have low amount of detail, they're the easiest to replicate. Here, try replicating this one, I found it to be very easy:

Fluttershy_S2E7_thumb.png

Try to replicate the shading in the eyes, use the shade and the black of the irises to shape the white spots in the eyes instead of using lines with your pencil, it'll make it look more shiny (since, as you can see in the original picture here, the eye shine don't have black lines around them). For stuff like the different color streaks in rainbow dash's mane and tail, try using different shades of grey to depict them instead of just lines, it should look really nice, like this:

rainbow_dash_sketch_by_bronyfang-d4kvdvr

(not drawn by me)

When your done a sketch, take your pencil (I personally use a 2B for this task) and trace your lines to make them dark, it'll help prevent fading and make your drawings stand out from the pages more.

@@Mr. Jaguar, Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm going to try to draw this Fluttershy today.

I've got only a couple of HB's at the moment. img-1364288-1-derpy_emoticon2.png I guess I should buy some other grades... What would you suggest?

Edit: Done Fluttershy. I didn't get her eyes quite right, but overall it's not too bad. Sombra was better anyway.

I looked at the first picture and my initial thoughts were far from great but i kept in mind that you are "new". I kept scrolling and they got better and better. You sir are awesome! You are getting good at this. I keep finding problem with eye spacing when it comes to drawing good old ponies. Keep up the good work! (I personally like the Surprised Fluttershy Picture) :D

You did the eye shine exactly as I suggested, good job :D, and your lines are pretty nice. Hmm, I would say keep practicing with that one till you make a near-exact replica of the original, since it's pretty low in small detail and therefore easy to replicate. Practice practice practice. As for pencils, I personally just use an HB for the light sketching, then darken my lines (and anything black like pupils) with a 2B, I don't use anything else.

A little tip for replication, try looking back and forth from your reference and your drawing as frequently as possible, you gotta keep the memory of the reference fresh in your mind. Scan for any little mistakes, they add up and negatively effect the look of the drawing, so always keep an eye out for any little imperfections. Have a small, skinny eraser, or cut off a small, skinny eraser piece from a big eraser (assuming you have one) to erase tiny little mistakes without erasing things you don't want erased.

@@Mr. Jaguar, Thanks again, I find your advices very useful. I ordered some pencils yesterday, (pack of 6 from 8B to HB, and one of 2H and 5H, now I wonder if I'm ever going to use them img-1366748-1-derpy_emoticon2.png )

Twilight:

img-1366748-2-IMG_20130413_152830_zps29b

Face is too oval and long, and everything is too diagonal.

EDIT: Tried to draw a blind bag pony I bought today:

IMG_20130413_225933_zps56dfaf07.jpg

Face is terrible, because I focused on her body and shading. It all looks weird...

Just keep trying, you came pretty close with that Twilight drawing. Don't give up. For the different streaks of color in the hair, try not using black lines to seperate the different color streaks, just different shades of black or gray. Try drawing VERY light lines to indicate where you want the colors to seperate into different streaks, light enough so that they blend in with the shading, then color them in different shades. Take a good look at the Rainbow Dash sketch I linked to see what I mean, I really suck at explaining ><

Oh, and for the pupils, try to make them as black as possible, it'll look better. Overall, you've gotten SIGNIFICANTLY better since your first drawing, just keep it up.

I'm trying, but it's quite difficult with HB pencil. I had to press really hard to make Twi's pupils. And shading is painful. Hopefully I'll get the other pencils soon.

Ya, they fade, which is pretty damn lame (well I think 2b's fade a bit too, but not as much). I'd wait for the 2b till you start your next one. I think sunlight fades drawings, so keep them outta the sun. To my knowledge, artificial lights don't fade them.

Keep it up, you're getting better! What kind of stuff do you usually draw? I get the impression that your style tends to be Somewhat sleek, with hard lines and angles. If so, I have a similar style. It's tough for me because Ponies are soft and round and don't have many hard angles like I like to draw. Definite improvement, and don't be to hard on yourself

I'm a' tell you who's best pony, by da hour. Just like Rosie O'Donnell at a Bisexual Bridal Shower.

I don't draw anything img-1370463-1-derpy_emoticon2.png Of course I've drawn some random stuff during boring lessons, but this is my very first attempt at "serious" drawing. I don't know what my style is img-1370463-2-derpy_emoticon2.png

DIscord:

Eyes should be more to the left, and more tilted. Right side of his face looks weird. (probably should be bigger)

Now, something I'm quite proud of: ponified Soma Cruz from Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

post-13039-0-21094500-1366059138_thumb.jpg

Perhaps I shouldn't have drawn the sword... And I had no idea what to do with his tail. It took me over 2 hours, but the results are more than satisfying (for me) biggrin.png

If you don't know what does Soma Cruz look like:
