Berry's right. This is, actually, all according to plan. Key's plan, which she is actually making up as she goes along. Don't worry, it does make sense though, but you have to step through Key's shield and figure out what's really going on inside her head.

 

It is really important to realize that not all of Key Gear's thoughts are communicated in each post. She is the very definition of an unreliable narrator. Any post that is done from her viewpoint, is likely to not contain any information that could be used against her. This isn't my doing, this is a product of the way that Key thinks. She doesn't *actively* do much strategizing; instead, the entire process takes at a deeper level and it subtly influences her interactions with others at all times (except with Bolt, she really really trusts him).

 

So, anyways, about the present incident. Key just revealed her true nature to everypony on the train. What in the world could she have been thinking?! Well, it's actually quite simple, really.

• Denying such a blunt accusation would require a level of deception that Key is not willing to do. Key is a thief, but she isn't a liar.
• Lies require explanation and explanation can get you trapped. Key hates traps.
• Simply saying "No, I'm not a thief!" would have convinced no one.
• She could have dodged the question, but then Lapis's statement would have hung over her like a cloud. Other passengers would have doubted her, no matter what. So, might as well put the cards on the table and see the immediate reactions of the other ponies.
• Daylight. If she had lied and been caught in the lie, then her alliance with Daylight would be up in smoke. Then, the next time the darkness came, who would save them?
• Lapis. If Key denied, then she would have to match wits with Lapis. He is a researcher. His objective is the truth. She's well aware of this, so she gives it to him. Why drain her energy in a losing fight?
• Her brother. It was one thing to be a filly with a troubled past, but to be a liar? To Key, that would be like betraying her brother's trust. She doesn't think that he would like a liar.

So, there were quite a few reasons for Key to admit that Lapis was right, and there were no good reasons for her to say that Lapis was wrong. Now, where will things go from here? Well, Key is hoping that, if they hear her story, the passengers will choose to view her in a sympathetic light. If they don't, then she has another plan, but I can't reveal it here. We'll have to wait and see.

If I was on that train, I would run back to my room and lock everything with two padlocks and enchant every valuable things with magical booby traps.
