Why do we need to write 100 words in a post?

Well, you certainly aren't the first person to complain about it.

 

It's so no one spams the threads, and so that the post count actually matters.

The reason you need a hundred words in a post is to show that you can think of a well formulated and pertinent answer to the threads topic.  If they didn't restrict it some, you would have pages of people replying with spaces or stupid little one-word-answers.  

 

The admins know what they are doing, it keeps the forums clean and uncluttered.  Making their jobs easier, and our experience more enjoyable.

Actually it's characters, not words. And the reason is simple, to stop spamming. It's not really that hard to overcome, just add a little more depth to what your response is, for example...

 

Instead of: "Im not happy with Twilights Transformation to an Alicorn"

 

Say: "Im not happy with Twilights Transformation to an Alicorn because it strays from what we all know and love, and while it's understandable that she will change one day, I don't think it should have been now"

 

 

So put simply, it's a spam filter of sorts, easy to overcome, just don't post random nonsense to avoid it like "aaaaaaaaaa" or anything.

My answer includes what has already been said, and the fact that it does help stop trolls. As sad as it is, I'd imagine that for some people who want to just bother someone; typing 100 characters would be just tedious for them. Considering that they have to be more creative instead of just posting "no you trollololol" or whatever the troll is attempting to troll about.

 

I would also go to say it adds a bit of quality to the forums to give it a good representation for the lack of said trolls, and the at least decently thought out answers that are required for some forum sections. That can help draw in more members, and even donations for keeping a quality control of posts.

Though it is not exactly a perfect system as I have witnessed multiple users artificially padding their posts to meet the requirement I understand why this was implemented, spam is a problem on virtually any forum so it is understandable that the staff would try to keep that to a minimum.

It keeps post quality high. Like or not, it seems to work. You're always free to post in Cloudsdale if you want to spam a bit sometimes though.

Not every Forum section has the 100 Character limit. As you may notice, some have 50, some have 10, and I believe the Life advice section requires a minimum of 200 Characters per post.

 

The awnser to your question is simple: To keep the Forums clean and tidy, avoid spam, and to have proper, worthy awnsers for each topic. A post should always be justified, nobody wants to see the same old and boring "No", "Yes" awnsers. It is often used to avoid advertisement on the forums, as links to websites, do not count as characters.

Just as a quick aside/clarification, we don't need 100 words in a post, we need 100 characters; big difference between 100 words and 100 characters.  100 words would be a fairly unreasonable demand, whereas 100 characters minimum requirement is actually quite reasonable all around.

You don't need to write one hundred words in order to post. You need to type in one hundred characters (some requiring more or less depending on which forum you post under). Any letter (capital or lowercase) or number counts as a character, but punctuation marks, spaces, and paragraphs don't.

 

The purpose for the character minimum filter is to ensure higher quality posts rather than higher quantity posts and prevent spam from clogging the topics. Prior to the minimum, there was a lot of criticism from former forum members because the posts (particularly the brief one-liners and macro-only posts) lacked the quality control. The character minimum filter is there to mandate people here to type in high quality.

100 words? Lordy, I would not be able to do that every single time I want to make a post! That'd be crazy! People have already said the difference, but I can't even imagine.

 

If that were the case I would have to write a novel-lenght posts. Anytime that I want to make a post for that matter.

 

Yeah, I am SO glad that it's /characters/ verus /words/. So many of my posts are already short in lenght.

It makes you think about your posts, and it adds more meaning to them. Just saying "Yeah", or "This", doesn't really contribute much to a conversation. As others have already said, it protects against spam too, but it's mostly to make more quality posts.

 

Also, 100 characters is barely 2 lines. It's not that hard to make.

No,not exactly. While posts may say similar things, each post is still an expression from an individual. If they were to not allow people to have the same views on things our forums would be dead. Spam means pointless and off topic, and if its on topic then it's fine in general.

Some people really feel that 100 is just too much when honestly I feel that if you can't get 100+ characters in a post then you are probably not looking to be on a forum. A forum is a place for discussion, and we want to do our best to ensure that we can keep detailed discussions alive and strong.

Probably to prevent short and repetitive spam and to improve the overall quality of posts. I enjoy the rule, it pushes users to make somewhat detailed posts and in my opinion it wouldn't hurt to have a much larger minimum. That is just my opinion. Posts should just be  thought about as opposed to effortless clacks on the ol' keyboard.
