Chat is closed

I can see why you would like to have a 17ish+ chat room, seeing as it would make people who don't want to read some of the things certain users post. While I do agree that if you lie about your age it's your own fault if you see things that are "innapropiate" for your age, I actually think a better solution would just be to keep it clean and friendly in the chatroom we have already.

Also, think about Fluttershy. Fluttershy is crying because of the stuff going down in the chat. Think of Fluttershy for freaking goodness sake!!!

The Fluttershys can help themselves. Think about the Viscras! The Viscras!

Anyways, it's a shame the chat had to be taken down like that, but it's a good thing it did. Maybe a couple days without the chat might make people stop taking the rules for granted?

With that said, I don't want to see the chat with any kind of 18+ free-for-all whatever change made. I don't want to see the chat devolve into /b/ or something.

Anyway, I gotta say, you don't realize how much you hang out in chat until it isn't there.

A free-for-all chat would be horrible, things would get out of hand VERY quickly.

I think the easiest thing to do is, when you click on somepony's name in chat, it gives you the "Private Chat" option and the "Ignore Private Chat" option if there was a "Report" option as well, we could avoid having to hunt down the user's profile and just go to the report window from there.

That would be alot more practical than two chats.

NSFW content is strictly forbidden because the site is intended for all ages. That idea wont do |:

Also don't forget the timezone differences. What would be late night in the US is day on the other side of the world...so there's not really any true "dark hours" anyway :P

Chat is closed...? I'm the last to hear about this? Wow, I'm slow.

You could simply have different chat rooms. Like, if anyone has ever played Stick Arena Ballistick on XGen before, you'll know there's like 7 different chat rooms, each one has a certain degree of inappropriate stuff. Just having one chat room will eventually go chaotic with too many users, in my opinion.

Yo Applejack...

Y'alright?

I've already addressed that, and it's not going to happen. We have a standard of conduct here that is global across the entire community and all services related to it; the same rules that apply to the forum apply to the chat room, the skype group, the Minecraft server, the petting zoo, and the VIP moderator lounge.

It's hard to maintain the rules when we have people of all ages coming onto this website and into the chat room where a lot of bad stuff has been happening lately. How often do trolls come around this site anyways?

Not as often as I would expect given the rate and speed at which it has grown... we've had a few to be sure, but not a whole bunch.

I'd like to provide an official stance towards some of the ideas I've seen thrown around in this thread, and an insight into my team's side of the debacle, as the staff members who work to make MLP Forums possible to begin with. I kindly request that you do not suggest any changes to the chat's features until you've read this post - it will answer a lot of questions.

First and foremost, IP.Chat does not allow the creation of multiple rooms or the addition/changing of any features other than what IPS gives us. It is one of the better web-based chat solutions out there, but the only part of it that I have control over is its aesthetics. But, even if I could add everything you all wanted to it - or heck, if I replaced it with a more feature-rich solution like ArrowChat or CometChat - I would not do it. And I will explain why:

MLP Forums is a forum community. Public posts and discussions are a forum's bread and butter. Posts are permanent, organized, threaded together, and most importantly, public. A good forum discussion, even after it ends, remains archived and accessible, and available in search engines. All of a forum's public discussions have the potential to attract new visitors, and every new visitor has the potential to register and become a lasting part of the community.

With live chats, the focus is on quick, real-time communication - an easy way to reach other people and get discussions going immediately. Chats, by their very nature, happen faster; consist of shorter, snappier messages; and generally don't make for good reading the same way that a great thread does. While it is possible to archive chats publicly, separate discussions into separate chatrooms, and even open chatrooms up to the public, archival, organization, and public access are all far better suited towards the forum medium. Moreover, a chatroom is easier to abuse due to its real-time nature - and without true round-the-clock moderation, abuse can, will, and does happen.

The mere fact that we, as a forum, provide a chatrooom, already establishes the potential for the chat to take away or inhibit our members' posting activity, which is the lifeblood of the site. No matter how great a discussion in the chatroom was, it will not ultimately help the forums remain successful and sustainable in the long run; while every post made adds something to the public history as a community and provides something that new visitors can potentially find.

Every step we take to develop the chatroom into something better suited towards more complex discussions, or a greater... ahem, variety of discussions, can potentially damage the forum aspect of the community. And without that, we could not exist. I've already seen a few people complain about having nothing to do at night now that the chatroom is closed, and saw others telling them to check out the forums that they have to thank for the mere existence of the chatroom to begin with. We are a forum community, not an IRC network.

How many communities can you name that exist solely as a live chatroom? Most chatrooms are really just little subcommunities that are part of something larger - the chats rely on that to get their traffic, because they are extremely ineffective at generating traffic of their own.

I took a risk when I decided to add the chatroom - something I did not originally want to do, if you check back and read some of my posts near the founding of the site - because I can understand the need for a channel through which to communicate informally with your fellow members besides the non-realtime forums and private messages. I don't have a problem with that, but I made a compromise by forbidding the chat discussion of new episodes on their opening weekends. Our chatroom is mainly a place to informally chat to and get acquainted with other members - it is not a place meant for serious discussion, and it is not something that I wish to put excessive resources towards maintaining considering how much work there already is to do on the forums.

When people start asking us to split the chatroom into separate rooms for 18+ content, they are asking us to put resources towards adding the following to MLP Forums:

  • a place that directly violates the standards my staff work to uphold (I would not wish a place swarming with 18+ material to ever be directly associated with MLP Forums) if it is a true free-for-all chat, and that will require additional staff resources if we do wish to moderate it
  • a place that has the potential to take more activity away from the forums than the chatroom already does
  • a place that has absolutely nothing to do with the ultimate goal of MLP Forums, which is to be the best My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic-centric forum community on the Internet
That is what you are asking us, as the people who keep this site running day after day and already put countless hours into maintaining it. Treat the chatroom as a privilege, and use it for what it is. Respect the standards of quality and responsibility that we subject the forums themselves to - it's the least you can do when we go out of our way to provide a service that doesn't help us grow and allocate staff resources towards trying to at least keep its quality more or less in line with the public forums.

Maybe, we could make a topic in the Everfree Forest where people would talk about whatever, while not being too vulgar or spammy, but still having a fun lightheartedness.

Just a thought. Normally, I don't give suggestions.

One more thing - if we were to seriously implement an 18+ chatroom, I would not be allowed to see it or be part of it myself.

Totally beat me to the punch on that one. Such a hopeful opportunity at snark, gone with the proverbial wind! );

keep it real .
