Gigapony 650 May 14, 2013 Share May 14, 2013 (edited) I have enjoyed drawing for a long time, but I've never really tried to draw ponies. So I decided to change that. First thing I did was look up an image ot Twilight Sparkle to use as a reference, and I made an attempt to draw her. Here's what happened: I got lazy and didn't finish her tail. Having done that, I felt bold and decided to try freehanding some generic ponies based on what I had just learned. Then this happened: Apologies for the very rough sketches. So I'm going to continue practising and trying to get better at making ponies. My intended goal is to try to get very close to the official style, with a little bit of my own style thrown in for flavour. As this is my first go at drawing ponies, I'm eager to see what you all think, so constructive crits are appreciated and welcomed. Milk Wave 454 May 14, 2013 Share May 14, 2013 Holy god you've already drawn the official g4 style :L Anyhow, for a first time sketch this is actually pretty well built in terms of how it looks and structure. I wouldn't call them rough sketches though, since what I do sometimes messes up the paper. 3 A shoutout to Dr-Whooves for making this sweet thing~ Anyway, go ahead and visit my http://mlpforums.com/user/380-sirius-crescent/'>About Me page for my characters :3 Engaged to Steel Crescent as of 5/1/2013

I'm glad you like the sketches, and I'm glad I was able to get close to the show's style. I have some OC's that I'm going to try my hand at drawing soon, and I hope to get your opinions on them when I post them~
Shiki 5,855 May 14, 2013 Share May 14, 2013 Overall good pieces of work. However, the poses are very default, which is a bit disappointing. In the future, you should try to incorporate a unique pose for your ponies, it would be much more enjoyable to view. I'm unsure how good/bad you are at shading, but that would also be much nicer to look at. I may be nit-picking, but when one can draw as good as this, expectations are instantly risen. 1 You'll be entranced by me ♥
Zygen 6,066 May 14, 2013 Share May 14, 2013 Bah "tried" drawing ponies? These all look perfectly fine drawings to me. . They infact already look show accurate, the lines are all very smooth and everythings draw very neatly, it looks great! I don't think you even have to strive for G4 style, its already there . So great job! Keep it up . 2 Thanks to Gone Airbourne for the awesome sig! My Oc's, Ponysona, Bella Vocal Covers Blog, MLP Covers Thread

Not nitpicking at all, I agree completely. In fact, one of the first things I'd like to do is start doing more new poses. I'm using the stock poses as a sort of "training wheels" for now until I get a better feel for how the ponies flow. Once I get more comfortable drawing in this style, I will definitely be using more varied poses. As for shading, I'll admit I'm not an expert at it, but I typically try to add some form of shading to most of my drawings, so expect to see that incorporated in the coming sketches as well. Gigapony 650 May 15, 2013 Author Share May 15, 2013 I have drawn moar ponies. I decided to bite the bullet and have a go at my OC's. But first, a little backstory. These OC's have been with me for a long time, but not as ponies. They were created back when I was REALLY into Sgt. Frog/Keroro Gunsou, and I have now ponified them. They're meant to be a troupe of villains. There were some other changes too, for example the one in the middle was gender-bent into a mare. Anyway here's the picture: For the one on the left (in the peaked cap), I took a bit of inspiration from Trixie's design, which I think shows clearly. They will all probably go through some more fine-tuning until I reach a design I'm satisfied with. Thay're also unnamed as yet (and I'm terrible at naming) so I'll gladly accept suggestions. These are only three of eight total OC's. I'll draw the rest soon. As always, opinions are very much welcomed.

Gigapony 650 May 16, 2013 Author Share May 16, 2013 Thank you all once again for your words of encouragement! Knowing that people like what I draw really helps me to want to do more and get better. I drew my OC's again, this time introducing a new one, a very mean nurse. Immunisations are very important, but I think she's aiming a little too high. On another note, I really need to start coming up with names for these guys...

Gigapony 650 May 16, 2013 Author Share May 16, 2013 (edited) Pony with a bomb cutie mark could be Spitfire? Nurse could have Cross as a last name, for a double meaning. I'm curious as to what their colors are. Do you know what they are, and if so what are they? Spitfire is a really cool name, but already taken by the Wonderbolt Spitfire. I recalled "The Incredibles" had a villain called "Bomb Voyage" which I kinda like as a name for her but I dunno if it fits. Indeed, I have their colours more or less planned out. The Nurse would have an off-white body with grey mane/tail, her cutie mark is black (along with the cross on her hat) and her eyes are a faded purple. Her hat is white and her armband is a light grey. For the bomb one, she's a dark (almost black) charcoal with a dull slate black helmet. The "no" sign on her helmet is red. Her mane and tail are white (the tip of her tail is charred black like a lit fuse) and her eyes are orange. The police one is a faded pastel blue (rather like Rainbow Dash, but slightly more turqouise). Her jacket and hat are royal blue. The bottom part of her hat and her epaulettes are dark green. Her belt and the hat's bill are black. Her mane and tail are bluish black. Her cutie mark is red as is the star on her hat and her eyes are also red. That hazmat suited pony on the previous drawing is all yellow. His lenses are lime green and his "boots" are black. His cutie mark (as well as the one on his forehead) are also black. He's never seen without his suit. This may be subject to small changes, mind you, but they're pretty much going to follow those colour schemes. Fivefs 38 May 16, 2013 Share May 16, 2013 (edited) @@Gigapony, Ah so jealous of your skills! I wish I could draw like that, I'd say you've got posing down your OC's look very natural and have a lot of feeling and emotion in their stances. Do you post your art anywhere? I'd defiantly want to keep an eye out for your work As for names I really like "Bomb Voyage" but the way she is acting in the drawing you made she seems a bit on edge or cowardly, so I don't think that fits for how her personality might be. Tell us more about them! Police pony seems serious and in the second pic to be almost enjoying the fear or pain? How about "Baton Blue"? It works as a play on Baton Rouge, a Police Baton and beating someone black and blue Depends again on what her personality is, something I like about it is it opens the possibility of a related OC that you could name "Baton Rouge", too. A Hazmat pony is a fun pony! Haha for him I started thinking of something complicated but decided it didn't seem right. So my suggestion is he simply goes by "Rad" The nurse reminds me of nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I like @'s suggestion of Cross. So maybe Racket Cross? Racket as the noise her patients make. Or Ratchet Cross? Maybe she work in both machine and pony repair? Hahaha What is on her armband? Gigapony 650 May 17, 2013 Author Share May 17, 2013 Thanks! Well, the bomb one has sort of a neurotic personality. She's always nervous and twitchy, because she always ends up getting hurt some way or another, usually from her teammates' mishaps, or her own bombs blowing up in her face. The whole basis of her character is the concept of the world's unluckiest accident-prone pony, who has somehow been given the most dangerous job on the team. The police pony is quite similar to Trixie, or better still, an evil version of Rarity. She's very vain and egocentric, and only cares about her own needs. She has no problem watching her teammates suffer and do her dirty work as long as she stays safe and clean. She's also loud and obnoxious and very stuck-up. I actually really like the name you suggested, I might just use that. She even uses a baton so it works perfectly. The hazmat pony is generally a pony of few words, but when he does speak up, he's usually being snarky. He's technically the team's muscle, but he's also a huge lazy slacker who questions every order he's given. He's usually seen with his best friend, a pegasus stallion I have yet to draw. The nurse is usually machine-like and emotionless (or tries to be), but she's prone to fits of anger when her patients squirm too much. She has an unhealthy obsession with her leader (haven't drawn him yet), and her favourite food is eggplants. Funny you should mention Nurse Ratched, as I couldn't stop thinking of her when I was drawing her. I thought of calling her "Nurse Ratchet" or maybe "Nurse Ironcross" to use the cross suggestion and also invoke her cold-as-iron personality. Her armband says "KAPO" which is a reference to concentration-camp inmates in WWII who were assigned to "supervise" the other inmates. The Kapos wore similar armbands and were notoriously brutal to their fellow inmates. Her wearing one is meant to imply that she might not have been born evil, but was forced into it. A little dark for MLP, perhaps, but she was originally an OC from another franchise before I ponified her.
