@@Sky Warden,

Joan felt the hairs on her neck rise, somepony was watching her. Of course, the room was full of ponies, but years spend as a guard of one sort or another had given her an instinct  for being watched with intend.

Let's see. The nearby windows were not at an ideal angle and the outside not quite dark enough to produce a decent reflection of the interior, but she could make out the shape of a colt standing at a table behind her. Was he staring her hat, at her backside? Of course it was possible that the observer was simply astounded to see a pterasus, but she still was a bit agitated from dealing with Butch and felt like having a go at somepony.

She gave Rudolph short grin.

"Excuse me for a second."

She turned, as fast as possible without loosing the hat, ready to bring the metaphorical ton of bricks crashing down on- Asnee?

Her first thought was that Asnee had never seen her without clothes, whenever they had met before she had either been wearing uniform or her dress. It was a remarkable stupid thought and only served to fuel her irritation.

"And what do you think you're doing?"

She rounded the table between them, slamming her glass down and brought her freed claw up to grab Asnee's collar. She would have expected him to lean out of the way or catch the digit, he could be awfully fast, if he wanted, but to her surprise she got a hold of the fabric. Asnee looked unwell, like something was bothering him. She let go of him and cocked her head to one side, irritation quickly giving way to concern.

"Hey, what's eating you?"

Rudolph watched as Joan turned abruptly to the colt that was watching from afar. He watched as they began to talk to each other. At first Joan had seemed angry, but then she had softened. Rudolph was wondering what was so important.

"It must be Nightwatch Business. Sounds very important, I mustn't disturb them." Rudolph couldn't help but feel a little lost. Here in this strange place with nopony to hang out with. Gearbox was now dancing with a cute indigo mare while Joan had run off to mingle with other important ponies to talk business surely. He sighed heavily but shook his mane.

"There are plenty of other ponies here to meet. I just need to keep an open mind. After all, the night is still young."

He could always catch up with Joan later, Gearbox had looked pretty occupied, but if they wanted to hang out again before the night was over they would be welcomed. He adjusted his hat and tie, cleared his throat, smiled, and trotted to the dance hall to meet some interesting new friends.

Gearbox opened his eyes as he saw Rudolph entering the dance hall.

He remembered he came to see butch, and he assumed that rudolph would know where his is, or at least know someone who could introduce him.

But he didnt want to end this moment so abruptly, nor could he, even if he wanted to.

There'd have to be some way for him to get a word in with rudolph, but he didnt know how to handle these situations.

Needless to say, it was his first ball.

@@Silverwisp the Bard,

Seeing how Joan's face was covered in fury soon after she turned and saw him, a thought of rejection to his presence struck Asnee hard. She somehow knew that he was watching her, and it made her angry. A painful pulse exploded in his chest, stopping his heart and was taken aback as Joan slammed her glass and skipped the range between them.

His body froze. He couldn't help but stare blankly as Joan grabbed his collar with her claw in a swift movement and wait to suffer her wrath. Nothing happened. Gathering shattered pieces in his mind, he found a concern look from Joan. He felt something dammed behind his eyes. Realizing that it was tear, he blinked quickly and relaxed when he got his eyes dry.

Asnee's lips curved into a weak smile, and he shook his head slightly, "Oh... nothing... I was just...," he forced out a small chuckle, "You surprised me."

Realizing what just happened to him, he felt like he wanted to tear his skin off at that very moment. A realization that he just lost faith of Joan just because she was talking to another stallion made him feel horrible. Though, he still had no idea what made her so mad.

Moon an stars, what's going on? This whole situation felt like a scene from one of her cheap novels. Traditionally, the mare was expected to run off in tears. Since Joan was Joan, she took hold of Asnee's collar again and brought the other claw up to eye level.

"Asnee, tell me whats going on now. Twenty words or less, or I'm gonna force feed you this donut."

@@Silverwisp the Bard,

Asnee looked deeply into Joan's eyes as his body was pulled closer to them. He couldn't stand her stare. It looked very intimidating and beautiful at the same time. Yet, no escape was available for him. That time, he would prefer to fight ten diamond dogs instead of being trapped in such situation.

"I-I was just wondering who was that stallion you were talking with, be-because his accent sounded unique, a-and suddenly you turned around," he gulped. He always knew that he was a bad liar, but he just couldn't help it. "W-why did you look so angry by the way? It scared me. I thought I did something wrong." His gaze shifted down, "Sorry... more than twenty words."

"That's was this is all about? Me talking to a colt, who practically still got spots?"

She wrapped her wings around his neck and pulled in close, burying her muzzle in his mane and savoring the familiar smell of woodchippings.

"And you didn't even barge in and threaten to beat him up. Some coltfriend you are."

Asnee blushed in embarrassment knowing that Joan knew the true reason and it made her laugh so hard. Looking around, he found that some ponies around them were staring at him. A sigh escaped from his mouth and he relaxed as she buried her muzzle in his mane again. He liked whenever she did that. It always soothed the tense which often weighed his head. His right foreleg reached over her back and circled her slowly in a hug. To be careful and gentle was the only thing he worried about.

"H-he meant no harm. I don't buck ponies on the face just because I'm jeal- I mean just because they talk to you." He unleashed a chuckle. "I know. I'm an idiot," he whispered.

Joan still hadn't answered his question yet, but he knew it was much better to give his curiousity up and enjoy the moment. "Want to do something? Butch sure put his effort in this one."

"I know. I'm an idiot,"

Joan disentangled herself from Asnee, still grinning.

"Well, its a good thing you're pretty then, isn't it?"

She looked around, Rudolph was gone. She swept up her hat with a wing and deposited it on her head at an angle that wouldn't require Asnee to keep a foot distance between them and snatched her glass from the table.

"Well, we seem to have scared off the normal pony at any rate.. Poor guy must think Equestria is nothing but madponies. Lets stop at the buffet first, I need to refill this."

As they walked, something Asnee had said trickled into her mind.

"Wait, how do you know Butch?"

@@Shymantic,

Gearbox leaned back to look at Mulbury.

"You know, most people ask about my goggles or my wings and are put off by them. But you've been awfully quiet about it."

Gearbox had many reasons for being weary of social situations, and one of them was the attention his brass wings and strange goggles that hide his eyes gathered.

Gearbox also knew his accent was very strange to have, having 'Come' from las pegasus. His accent was quite canterlot-ish(British-ish). But it was usually under control and when it wasn't it was quite thin, as it came out a bit now.

Addem shuffled slightly, glancing around at the ponies gathered in the hall. It was easy to pick out the elites of Canterlot: clad in elegant, often excessive clothing, they wove through the crowd, exchanging pleasantries and compliments. He swallowed hard, peering through the crowd and attempting to see if anypony truly stood out. He noticed a pony on the dance floor, his wings gleaming as he tilted back, away from the mare in front of him. An inventor? Possibly, given those goggles... He chuckled, watching the pony. In any case, he might be interesting...

And I dream of an absolution...

"Well, we seem to have scared of the normal pony at any rate.. Poor guy must think Equestria is nothing but madponies. Lets stop at the buffet first, I need to refill this."

Asnee giggled knowing that the colt Joan was talking with disappeared. "I won't blame him. You were very scary," he said jokingly.

"Butch? We're just business partners. He needs my ponies to help him with a construction project," Asnee replied without looking at Joan, focused on his way, but he kept walking very close to her. He could feel her warmth on his skin, radiating an amount of energy softly just like everypony else. As a martial artist he was very keen to his surrounding, and he could sense somepony's presence by their energy vibration. "He contacted our corporation. That's how I met him."

They arrived at the buffet soon after that, and Asnee offered himself to refill Joan's glass for her, along with another glass for himself. "You two know each other right?"

Though he didn't really like Butch, he didn't want to show it to Joan. She could be a close friend of the Boss, and saying his dislike to him might invoke a conflict, no matter how small. What just happened earlier was enough. He didn't want any more unnecessary quarrel. He took a sip of his drink, waiting for an answer.

"Ha, I've been trying to get some dirt on him for months. Home for the underprivileged youth my flank."

She smiled as she saw Asnee's expression and planted a kiss on his cheek.

"Just let me know, if you see him commit any easy-to-prove crimes. In the meantime, I'll focus on ruining him by drinking all his stuff."

She grabbed the ladle and heaped some more fruit into her glass until it was more of an alcoholic fruitbowl than anything else. She nibbled down a piece of mango and looked around: Several couples were waltzing their way over the dancefloor with various amounts of skill.

"Well, I'm not drunk enough to dance yet, lets check out the pool."

"Well, I'm not drunk enough to dance yet, lets check out the pool."

A heavy blush invaded Asnee's face as he felt Joan's soft lips kissing his cheek. After all this time, he still couldn't get used with it. Most of the time, it was her who started the kisses. He guessed he had to start soon after he could overcome his shyness. "Of course I will. I... I don't really like him either," he said as he quickly enriched his glass just like Joan did and followed her to the pool outside, carrying his glass.

They leaved the light of the ball into the calming dark blanket of the night. The pool doubled the moon on its surface, occasionally rippled against every wind blow, blurring the reflection of the glimmering moon. From the memory of their first ball together, Joan liked to dip her legs into a cold water, so he sat on the edge of the pool, staring at the dancing image on the pool.

Asnee chuckled and stared deep into her face, "Tell me when you finally get drunk."

"Tell me when you finally get drunk."

"Trying to take advantage of a poor, innocent girl, are you? I like it. Fair warning though: I'm not carrying you home again."

She sat down next to Asnee and inspected the bottle she had commandeered before leaving the buffet. She didn't understand the words on the label, but there were worms floating in it, which was a good start. She put her glass between her frontlegs and started to undo her braid with her claws.

"How's the water?"

"Oh come on," Asnee poked Joan with his hoof, "I just wanted to dance with you when you feel like it." Looking up into the sky, his sight caught the shimmering moon and suddenly he felt a little sleepy. He was going to say something to Joan about the clear night sky and calendar system when he saw her undoing her braid. He had never seen her mane without that braid, and he got nervous for an unknown reason.

"T-the water is uhm... nice." He sipped from his glass, stealing a gaze at Joan before looking to the pool again. "What is she going to do?"

Can you fly super fast because your wings don't get tired?" she asked, tilting her head inquisitively.

"Are made from a bronze and brass alloy. They are not very light." He paused, trying to think on her next questions.

"T-the water is uhm... nice."

Joan took off her head and, in a moment of inspiration, placed it on Asnee's head.

"In a minute, promise, but just allow a girl a bit of nostalgia."

She stretched and wiggled her wings.

"Do you know what you can do for fun, growing up in White Tail Wood? Exactly two things: Reading and swimming."

She slipped over the edge, and into the water, taking care not to cause too much of a splash.

The water was cooler than she had expected, Butch apparetly didn't believe in heating. Still, compared to White Tail Lake in fall, it was practically a hot spa. She took a moment to admire the mosaic that covered the floor and walls of the pool, depicting all sorts of seacreatures and sunken architecture, before surfacing a couple of feet from the edge.

She turned back to Asnee, grinning.

post-3492-0-91201600-1370367172_thumb.jpg

She paddled back towards him and hooked her claws on the edge. She looked up at Asnee. They were about the same height, so she wasn't used to look up at him.

"Got a kiss for a poor seamare?"

Cuppie peered out of the kitchen door which led straight to the ballroom making sure that nopony was watching as she slipped out and made her way to the bar, "get me a cider Whiskey Jim."

Whiskey frowned not liking to make nonalcoholic drinks he decided to make an exception, "aren't you supposed to be in the kitchen?" Taking the glass he was cleaning and filling it with cider the earth pony put the glass on the bar.

"No mug?" Whiskey shook his head and Cuppie shrugged downing the glass in one go before answering his question, "I finished besides, being in that stuffy kitchen made me miss you and my poor little hooves are aching." Her mock whinning tone caused Whiskey to be exaspereted, "all right all right you stay here for your break just don't get into too much trouble." She winked, "no promises."

The she turned to the mass of posh ponies sighing, normally she wouldn't mind socializing but fancy ponies made her nervous she almost always managed to say exactly the wrong thing. Frowning she looked down at the little black and white dress she had barrowed from one of the maides it wasn't nearly as fancy as all the other ponies but what was she to do.

"Got a kiss for a poor seamare?"

Asnee watched Joan dived into the water with a smile plastered warmly on his face. Seeing how she grinned and looked so happy made him grinned back to her. He paid a moment to observe the mare in the water after she appeared again. Her mane was fresh purple, dripping the cold pool water back to its surface. Eyes serenely reflecting any escaping light from the ball behind him. Putting a hoof under her chin, he stared deep into her yellow eyes, "Anything for my Joan."

Asnee pulled her closer as he leaned closer and closed his eyes, holding his breath. His worry of anypony spotting them was shoved away. He felt her wet lips pressing softly against his. He reached over her back and hugged her into the kiss.

The world seemed silent. No sound of ponies talking or their hooves taps. The music slowly faded out. Only her breath and heartbeat. They were alone in serenity. He could feel his blood rushing furiously on his cheeks. He tightened his hug, not wanting this moment to end soon.
