Hehe, that would be funny. No actually I have a very odd method to my drawings, and no it isn't tracing.  I completely freehand my drawings with no use of building blocks such as skeletal bases at all. Basically, I make it up as I go. This is just how I have always drawn. It takes a lot of time though, because I usually have to go back and fix certain proportions that don't look quite right. It also limits me a lot because I need a reference pic. I'm going to try to break myself of this bad habit, so I'm going to try to use a skeletal base on Rainbow Dash. Here is what I have so far, I'll update with the finished pic later: Done:

The only thing is, when D1SC0RD posts a new image, I have to try and find it on DevArt so the ref can fit most of the screen. And you are right, doing it this method is quite time consuming (drawing the twilight I posted here, I think I spent 1½ hours just on her mane). However, in the end, the results are usually quite good if you don't just give up on certain lines. Though this method can help to learn how to draw normal ponies from the show, it doesn't help you to develop your own style. The only way of doing that is learning about anatomy like Kenniks had said.

 

On another note, I can't wait to start on this image. Bought an XL Sketch pad (was sick of not being able to fit an entire sketch on my normal sized one :3), as well as ordered a set of 72 Prismacolours to replace my 12-piece colouring set. However, I do owe this thread the original Twilight image, so I'm currently working on that. Good to see how many people are actually participating in this thing.

Aw, sorry that my images are too small for you. One helpful trick is using the google image search. You go here (google images) and click the little camera in the search bar. From there, you can paste the image URL. After that, click "All Sizes" and you'll see the same picture in different sizes. If you need extra help with it, let me know!

IT'S PENCIL TIME! It took me 2.5 hours. I'm still pretty slow when it comes to drawing.

I think that it looks good overall, but some proportions and details are still not quite right. And of course it looks much better in reality.

No worries  Take all the time you need! Truthfully, I don't even mind if people post applejack still. One reason why I update the image is to keep the fast people busy, and so that people have something to move on to when they finish their pic.

That's funny, i also usually just draw it as i go and some things end up a bit out of proportion so i tried to draw RD by drawing circles and joints etc. i really felt it helped with the head but i also think because I'm not used to it, it's gonna get worse before it gets better. (and my rd drawing is evidence of that)

Self commentary: For some reason, I kept trying to draw Fluttershy instead of Rainbow Dash with this one. Not entirely sure why. Also I was forced to do some digital clean-up as the page I'm using (so far all three pictures are on the same page), is getting a bit gray from all the graphite. I'm going to have to spend some time with my kneadable eraser and try to clean that up if I intend to keep going on that one page.

After a long time of procrastination I finally made my Rainbow Dash drawing. I feel that I kind of messed up on her right eye (viewing it by her perspective), as usual. Other that that I'm quite happy with how it turned out.

So here be my latest attempt. Went better than Twi, but perhaps not as well as my AJ. I kind of followed 's example and scanned the pic through various stages of development for the benefit of and anypony else who's interested in seeing the whole wireframe/skeletal sketching method in action.

My take on Rainbow Dash. Sketching is fun and gives a nice little boost to self-confidence.

Okay, so I didn't really miss the Rainbow Dash deadline, but I did not have time to upload the drawing. Here it is:

I hurried up and got the Fluttershy one done today as well:

 

 

I'm probably gonna redraw the eyes if I have time. They look a bit too small.

 

I like the leveling up so far. This pose was the most fun to work on.

Well, here is my Fluttershy. Who would have thought my least favourite pony would turn out being my best drawing out of these so far. I just went back to my original method without creating a skeletal structure and I've got to say apart from some slight proportion issues with her flank I think I nailed it!

She looks a bit skinny to me. It's good that you're using skeletal base though. Practice more and some day you'll be able to nail it down

Well I wish this thread was around when I first did my first drawing . I would've liked to see the reactions on here(spoiler it was really bad .) anyways, I have enjoyed looking at everyone here and their drawings having just checked this thread out, and its really cool to see the progression everyone makes.

 

I'm gonna say that honestly I'm not really that good, and even more so rusty because I haven't done any drawings since my old computer broke(mostly because this ones slower but yeah :/.) but I'm thinking that maybe if I get a chance I'll do some drawings here (of course I have alot of catchup to play.) 

 

Mind you I also draw with a mouse in GIMP, so yeah. Although I got use to it(Not sure how I will be now that its been like 1-3 months since I drew anything really or something.)

 

But yeah, I think I might try doing these if I get the time, I could use some practice, and I kinda wanna get back to drawing some ponies maybe. So I guess I'll see how I feel . 

 

Don't expect alot though.

If you'd like to buff off that rust, this thread would be perfect for you I don't know if you read the first post, but you are allowed to start from pony #1 (applejack) if you'd prefer not to begin where we are now (or you could just start with flutter... it's up to you). Yeah I did, and I think I probably will, I honestly hadn't moved to a whole lot of advanced poses when I did start doing art here. I'll probably try and do some of this stuff, its just a matter of when I feel I have the time and motivation and stuff to do so .

 

I know theres no expectations, I'm just a very self critical person . just being hard on myself I guess.

 

I hope I participate aswell, i'm sure I can benefit a little, plus it gives me a goal or project of whatever you wanna call it, so I don't need to come up with my own to use to improve.

 

Btw this is a great idea for a thread . And is looking quite successful so far, the difficult does seem to be a good gradual  incline aswell.
