Chapter One

It all started when I was just a little filly, living with my parents in the small village of Ponyville. Yeah... I know. Not as exciting as it would be living in Canterlot. Instead, I'm stuck here working in the family lake business. Not something that I would choose if I had a choice. It's just a lake ponies have to pay five bits to swim in but they are only paying for the name. Celestial Springs. It's a rip off if you ask me.

Oh! My name is Sugar Note, or Sugar as everypony calls me. I'm just a regular old pony with a blank flank. I have a light pink coat, sapphire blue eyes, and black and darker pink mane and tail. These colors don't fit in with my family at all. My mom is an aqua blue coat and a teal green mane and tail while my father is a white coat and aqua blue mane and tail. No mixtures at all.

Let's rephrase that. I don't fit in with my family. They are all too prim and proper and that's just not me. I want to hang loose and live a little, to be myself. My parents don't want me to though. They think I'll destroy everything in my path like a size five tornado.

"Sugar! Get down here and teach these fillies how to swim!" my mother, Lilly Pad, yelled. I sighed and trotted down the stairs, coming to a halt in front of a father with three little fillies around him.

"Welcome to Celestial Springs... Where every moment is a moment with Celestia..." I huffed and continued. "Swimming lessons are an extra ten bits. Take it or leave it." My mom kicked me in the side, causing me to straighten up and put on a fake enthusiastic voice. "But for you, sir, it'll be five bits!" The father looked at me weird and put the money on the counter. He turned away while muttering something and walked about ten feet and stopped.

"We'll talk about this later." my mother said, putting the money into the cash register. I rolled my eyes and walked around the counter.

"If you will, please follow me this way to the filly lake." I said, walking towards a tiny, pony-made lake my parents added on so that I could teach fillies. I got into the water and saw the three fillies slowly get into the lake but stayed close to the edge. I looked up and noticed that it was a pretty gloomy day. There was no sun at all so why would anypony choose today to swim?

"Okay. Today's lesson is just the basics. To learn how to flo-"

"Aren't you going to ask what our names are?" one of the fillies asked, clearly interrupting me. I shrugged off my slight anger.

"Alright. What are all of your names?" I questioned, looking at the baby blue filly that interrupted me.

"I'm Blueberry!" he said, getting enthusiastic. I smiled slightly and looked to the next one, who was a light yellow color.

"I'm Lemon Meringue!" she stated. I immediately looked at the next little guy, which was a light green color.

"I'm Watermelon." he exaggerated, as if he were as annoyed as me. I was content with this one.

"I'm Sugar Note. Now as I was saying. Today we are learning how to float. All you gotta do is lean on your back and breathe deeply." I said, acting out the lesson so that they would understand. Watermelon and Blueberry were okay at it but Lemon Meringue kept screaming and yelling for help every five seconds.

I sighed and swam over to her, trying to calm her down. "Lemon, just sta-" she screamed even louder, causing everypony in the other lake to look at me. "Lemon! Just stan-" she kept screaming and splashing water everywhere, making me even angrier. I've finally hit my breaking point. I could feel my blood boiling and I couldn't hold it in any longer.

"LISTEN HERE YOU LITTLE TWERP! JUST STAND UP!" I screamed at the top of my lungs. My voice echoed throughout the lake and it caused everyone to stop in their tracks. Even Lemon, who stood up obligingly. Her father trotted into the lake, grabbed his three fillies, gave me an angry look, and walked all the way to the counter to demand his money back.

"I'm sorry, sir, but I can't give you a refund." my father, Raindance said, giving the customer an apologetic look. He saw me walk up behind the customer and gave me an angry glance before looking back.

"Fine! Then we aren't coming back!" the customer stormed off with his fillies, accidentally running into me in the process. He shrugged it off and left me completely alone with my parents. They both gave me an irritated look. My father cocked his head to the side, giving me a signal to go to my room and wait for them to come talk to me. I looked at them both and screamed.

"IF I HAD IT MY WAY, I WOULD'VE BEEN GONE YEARS AGO!" I ran past my parents and up the stairs, slamming my door. In the process of my door slamming shut, my picture frame fell to the ground and shattered into a million pieces.

I slowly walked over to the picture and looked down at the broken glass with the slightly ripped picture of me and my parents. The picture ripped in between me and them and I felt a cold chill run down my spine. I felt like this was a sign that it's time for me to go and try to find my own path in Equestria. I turned around and walked towards my window, looking out at the sky that is just as gloomy as me. A singe of hope came running through my veins and I knew this was it. The day I would truly find myself.

A few tears trickled down my face as I opened my window. I was planning on starting a new life so I didn't need anything. I climbed down the small staircase that my dad built for me so I didn't have to go through the shop to leave the house. I felt more tears fall down as I kept running. I ran through crowds of people who were screaming at me to watch out, I ran through merchants stalls, having them scream at me for destroying property but I didn't care. It felt good to leave and I was happy about it. I just kept running.

I soon was out of Ponyville and on the pathway to the Everfree Forest. I knew this was a bad idea but I trudged into it with a purpose. I needed to find Zecora, the said evil sorceress of Ponyville. Maybe she could whip me up a potion that could change my past and let me be me. Or at least put me on the right path. Either way! I'm determined to find her, even if it takes all night.

I heard a bunch of animal snickers all around me as I walked along the path. I felt colder and more scared the more I walked in, but I didn't let it show. Well, at least until someone ran into me, making me fall to the ground. I felt a weight on top of me making me shudder. I slowly opened my eyes and they were met with red ones. We both waited a second before screaming at each other and running in different directions. What I didn't know was that there was a tree directly behind me and I ran head first into it, causing me to fall again.

I sat up slowly while rubbing my head, getting my scruples back together. I looked around and saw a unicorn peaking out from behind the tree. I looked over and saw that they had a white coat with two different shades of blue in their mane and tail. She looked just as scared as I did.

"Hey... I'm looking for Zecora. Do you know where she is?" I questioned hoping to get some idea of where to go.

"Wait. You're looking for Zecora too?" she stated, coming out from behind the tree to sit in front of me. "My name is Vinyl Scratch."

"Yeah." I smiled and stood up. "I'm Sugar Note." She stood up as well and we shook hooves, getting acquainted. "So what are you looking for Zecora for?" I asked, looking at her.

"Well, I kind of want to know where my life is gonna start, ya know? Like when am I going to find out who I truly am?" Vinyl said, leaning against the tree. "What about you?"

"Same. I ran away from home because I couldn't take it there anymore." She looked at me and smiled a big toothy grin.

"Me too! I guess we're on the same boat, huh. Ironic, isn't it?" she stated before walking along the path with me. I smiled too and kept walking.

"It is sort of ironic. Especially since we met out here. But since we're together, I bet we could take on anything in our way." I said, looking all around. You know... Just in case.

"I bet we could take on a zebra!" Vinyl said, laughing at her own joke. I chuckled but continued walking. This path just kept getting darker and colder as we went on. It was getting tiring as well.

I saw a shadow cross our path, causing us both to halt in our tracks. We both turned and looked at each other, then looked back at the path. "Umm h-hello? Is anybody there?" I piped up, looking around. Nothing answered back as I expected. "I think it's okay. Let's just keep go-" I was cut off as we were pulled into a giant net trap.

We both started screaming when we saw Zecora come up to us. I gulped and started breathing heavy. What if she turns us into frogs? Then what will we do?

"Take on a zebra, eh? Little ones, you shouldn't testify what you cannot do." she said, stopping to look me in the eye. I heard Vinyl's teeth chattering next to me and it made me even more scared than I was.

"We're sorry, your evilness, we just needed your help! We didn't mean any harm that we caused with words!" I shouted, my voice shaking slightly. Vinyl started nodding her head really fast, agreeing with my statement.

"Need my help? I will see about that. You just used up one of my traps for the giant frogs that have been bringing havoc on my house." Zecora cut the rope and let us out. We both stood up quickly and took a couple of steps back.

"So, you aren't going to turn us into stew?" Vinyl said, causing me to kick her slightly.

"Silly little children. Why would I do that?" Zecora motioned for us to follow her into her house. We slowly obliged and walked in, staying near the door. "Now. What is it that you two need from me?"

"We want to find out what we are meant to be, where our paths will lead. Something, anything that can help. Please Zecora! We are desperate!" I said, getting on my knees and begging. Vinyl followed and started bowing to her, which I found quite out of place but it seemed to help, since Zecora smiled.

"If you want to find your path, you must find yourself, and to find yourself, you must find your home." she said, causing us to look at her confusingly. I stood up and stomped my hoof.

"I'm sorry Zecora, but I am not going back home! I hate it there!" I said and looked her deep into the eyes. She seemed to deepen her smile. She walked over to her stew pot and grabbed a few bowls, dipping them into it. She brought them back and set them down for us to eat out of.

"I'm sorry too Zecora. My home isn't fun at all. They don't let me be me." Vinyl put her face into the bowl and ate up the stew. "Could have used a bit more salt."

"Then it is not home." Zecora ate a bite of stew. "You're right. Needs more salt." she trotted over to the pantry and put some salt into each of our bowls. She sat down again and continued to eat.

"What do you mean it's not home? It's where we've been living ever since we were born!" I said, pushing the bowl away after I was done. Zecora chuckled as she set her bowl down. "Why are you laughing? I don't think it's funny."

"Where you live and where your home is are two different places. It's up to you to make it one. But I think that's enough for today. Get along with your journey and you will soon find yourselves." She took our bowls away and opened the door for us. Vinyl and I walked out slowly and turned around to Zecora.

"Can you at least give us one more hint on where this 'home' is?" Vinyl asked, tilting her head.

Zecora obliged and smiled down at us. "Home is where you want to be." She said, pointing at us. "Fairwell." She closed the door and that was it.

"Where do you think this home is?" I asked Vinyl. She looked at me with more that confusion on her face, mainly because she still had stew on it.

"Not sure." she stated. She turned around and started walking away. I followed.

The rest of the trip out of the Everfree forest was silent, left to our thoughts. We were both very curious as to what this home is and I, for one, am more than excited to find it now. One thing's for sure is that I'm not going back to that place I used to call home since it wasn't really home in the first place.

"Hey Sugar!" Vinyl said, snapping me out of my thoughts. "I gotta place to stay if you want to stay with me. We can pick up bright and early tomorrow to find our home! And hopefully soon, we can find ourselves!" I smiled at the offer and nodded, following her into a little hut-like thing that one of her cousin's owned. We got situated on the hay mattress that we were sharing and laid down for the night. We soon drifted off into our dreamland of our new home and who we are going to be.

Chapter Two

Pounding... All I hear is pounding. But... Where is it all coming from?

"Sugar..." A voice echoed inside my head, making me turn in every direction, but all I saw was mere darkness.

"Who are you? And what do you want with me?" I screamed, running around the dark place that has become my world. Cold chills kept running up and down my spine like something was actually causing them. I looked to see if it was actually something... It looked like hoofs, prickling their scaly roughness along my coat. I started running even more trying to get away from it all, but it's like someone was sitting on me as I ran. I wasn't going far at all. Oh Celestia... What is going on?

"I'm your home... Isn't this what you wanted? To be away from everything? Well here's your chance... Just take my hoof and I'll guide you to the right path..." At that moment, a smokey hoof popped up in front of me, causing me to jump back, but something pushed me forward into it. I grabbed onto the hoof and it brought me into the light, making me see everything so clear.

"Wh... What just happened?" There were prairies all around me with random trees sprouting up. Birds were singing and little bunnies were nibbling on carrots. I slowly walked around, gathering as much as I could until I ran into something... Geez. I need to start paying attention to where I'm going.

"Need my help?" I heard a voice above me. I slowly lifted my head and saw Princess Celestia holding her hoof out for me. I smiled and slowly hooked on to it. I pulled myself up and shook myself to try and clear my head.

"Princess... What's going on? Where am I? What am I doing here? Wh-" she covered my mouth with her hoof and chuckled her small laugh.

"Slow down. Nothing to be afraid of. We're in your dreamland." she lowered her hoof and started walking over to the birds. They all seemed to notice her and sang a song to her, filling me up with joy. I felt happy here. But I still had some unanswered questions.

"Okay, then what was that before and who pulled me in here?" I questioned, looking at the small deer who trotted up to see what was going on. The fawn walked up to me and nuzzled me, making me smile once again.

"That was your conscience talking to you. Maybe you're making the wrong choice to go on this journey to find yourself. Or maybe trying to see if you're strong enough to take on it. And the answer to who pulled you in here was Luna. She noticed you were becoming scared so she pulled you to the light." Celestia sang a little tune and the birds mimicked. It sounded beautiful, almost like the angelponies were singing. But then I realized what she said and I got defensive.

"Psst! Chh! I was not scared! I was merely surprised." I huffed and the fawn ran away. My smile left my face and I sat down, sullenly.

"Are you sure about that? Or are you trying to act strong?" she walked over to me and sat down. I thought about her words and let them sink in. Maybe she was right. Was I trying to act strong for my appearance sake? "Don't beat yourself up over it. In fact, I know somepony who you seem to remind me a lot of." she smiled down at me again and made me feel a bit better.

"And who is this?" I asked, watching the birds fly over our heads.

"Her name is Rainbow Dash. She is still coming to her senses about herself as well. I'm sure you'll meet her someday." Celestia stood up and looked up to the sky. "I think it's time for me to go. You got a long journey ahead of you. Oh! And tell Vinyl Scratch not to worry so much about her future. I'm very sure she'll turn out just the way she wants."

     Pounding... I hear it again.

"Where is this pounding coming from?" I questioned. I saw Celestia jump into the air and spread her wings to fly.

"You'll see. Safe travels Sugar Note." I felt myself falling fast. Faster than my dad running to the dinner table when we have Sweet Apple Acres' pie. Okay... Maybe not that fast.

"Sugar! WAKE UP!" More pounding was heard as my eyes snapped open. I took in my surroundings as I sat up slowly. I was still in the hut that Vinyl and I stayed in last night. There goes the pounding again. And it's coming from the door.

"Who's at the door?" I asked Vinyl. She got scared and hid me under the covers. I started kicking, trying to get out. "Vinyl! Quit it! I can't breathe!"

"You can breathe because you are talking! Now quiet down! It's your father outside looking for you!" I started panicking and hid under the covers again.

"Tell them I'm not here!" I felt a weight leave the side of the bed and slowly open the door.

"Sorry to bother you so early but, by any chance is there a filly here named Sugar Note?" I heard my father's voice say. I cringed as I heard hoof steps get closer to the bed.

"Nope, sir! Never even heard of that name! You can feel free to-" At that moment, the blanket was thrown off of me and my father was looking down at me, anger filling his eyes.

"You are coming home right now young lady!" He grabs my hoof and pulls me towards the door. I fight him the whole way there. "You are in such big trouble, I don't even know where to begin!" I yanked my hoof out of his grip and started screaming.

"Can't you see? I don't want to come home! I'm currently trying to find out who I am and what I'm suppose to do in this life and I can't do that by being trapped near a lake!" He tried to cut me off but I kept going. "And don't even say my future is with water! I can't stand to be near water! You don't know how many times I get scared to even take a step in there!

"After everyday of teaching little fillies how to swim, I want to literally curl up in a ball and cry so hard that it hurts to even keep them open! Some of them are even younger than me and have cutie marks!! I haven't even experienced getting MY cutie mark! I want to search for myself now and there is nothing anypony can do about it! I'm tired of living a lie that I'm not even starting!" I finished, letting all of my anger leave my body. My father just stood back, taking in everything that I said. I breathed heavy and looked behind my dad to see Vinyl giving me a thumbs up. I shot her a glance that got her to stop and go into the bathroom.

"I never knew you felt that way, Sugar..." he paused and sighed. "Well... I guess I'll see you when you get back from your journey..." I saw a tear fall down his cheek as he walked out the door, closing it softly behind him. I felt like the worst pony in the world. I knew I had to do it though. It's the only way I could actually go and find myself.

Vinyl came out of the bathroom and walked over to me. "Woah. You okay?" she pointed at my face which caused me to walk over to the mirror. I, in fact, was crying. I wiped the tears away and looked back at her.

"You saw nothing." I said and sat on the bed.

"Whatever you say... baby." I threw a pillow straight at her and hit her in the face, making her mane get messed up. "Hey! You messed up my perfect mane!" She looked over into the mirror but froze. "Wait. I kind of like it." She messed it up more, along with her tail. From my perspective, she looks amazing. I kind of like the messy do on her.

"Okay, fashionista. Let's get going." I said, grabbing her tail and pulling her towards the door.

"Ow! Ow! Uncle!" I let go and she stood up and walked next to me. "Do you think that could be my destiny? To be a fashionista?" I thought about it and looked her up and down.

"I'm not sure. I guess we'll find out on our journey!" I said and we both smiled at the thought.

We walked through Ponyville to get to the train station. Mainly because I was following Vinyl.

"Hey Vinyl! Where are we going?" I asked as she walked up to get our tickets with money in a little satchel that I haven't noticed before (Very convenient).

"Two tickets to Appleloosa please!" the ticket vendor handed her the tickets while she paid the money for it. She handed me a ticket and we walked over to some benches and sat down.

"Why Appleloosa?" I questioned. What does she have in mind that would be there?

"Gotta start somewhere! Might as well start somewhere with a cool name!" I laughed and we sat back and relaxed in silence.

I thought back to the dream I had last night. With all that happened, I'm not sure if my conscience is right or wrong. Well, it's too late to back out now. Already made my dad cry...

"All aboard to Appleloosa!" The attendant yelled. Vinyl hit me, snapping me out of my daydream and we boarded the train. "Alright passengers! This train ride will last all day so get comfortable!" He walked around and checked all of our tickets as the train started moving.

We took a seat all the way in the back and we sat in silence for a good ten minutes before somepony interrupted it.

"Excuse me. Is anypony sitting in this empty seat?" a male voice asked. We both looked up and saw a Pegasus with a green mane sitting in the seat in front of us.

"That's why it's empty." I said kind of annoyed. I don't know what was up with me the past ten minutes but I guess it's because of my confusion with everything.

"My bad. I'll go find another seat if you're uncomfortable." He went to get up when Vinyl stopped him.

"No! That's alright! You can sit here! Ms. Grumpy Hooves over here is just being a little sour today." She stuck her tongue out at me, making me hide a grin. I looked out the window and listened in on their conversation.

"So what's your name?" the pegasus asked.

"My name is Vinyl Scratch and sour puss over here is Sugar Note." I looked over at her and kicked her playfully... Okay. Maybe a little harder than that.

"Haha! You girls are funny! I'm Thyme Flurry." I nodded towards him and then continued to look out the window. The sight of the prairies and the animals grazing in the grass was beautiful. I wonder what it would feel like to bring some spunk there. Maybe some explosions.

Wait. What am I saying? That's horrible! Snap out of it Sugar! Now's not the time to think about destroying stuff! Plus that could get me in trouble!

"So how long have you had your cutie mark?" Vinyl asked, interrupting my mental fight. I looked over and noticed that Thyme Flurry had a cutie mark. It was a spice bottle that was sprinkling it's magic into a bowl. Interesting.

"I've had it for about a week. I figured out that I loved to cook and now I'm off to Appleloosa to start my own diner! It's a great feeling to get your cutie mark!" He looked at us and smiled. "I can see you two still haven't figured it out yet. Don't worry. It'll come when it's ready. You just have to dig a little." He stood up from his seat and started walking away. He stopped in his tracks and turned around. "Gotta get back to my family. Hopefully you two will stop and eat at my diner soon!" He went through a door and was out of sight.

I turned back to my window and leaned my head against it. My mane was falling out of my braid which was driving me insane. It kept getting into my eyes and tickling the inside of my ear. It was rather annoying.

"You know what?" I reached up with my mouth and took out the ribbon, causing my mane to completely fall down. It was in big waves which I did not find flattering at all. Vinyl looked over at me and started chuckling.

"Dude! You look like you just came out of a circus!" She bursted out laughing and my anger started building. I need some way to release my anger but I don't know how! It's very difficult when I have nothing!

"I do not! And I was thinking about getting it cut when we get to Appleloosa! I hate my mane and it's driving me insane!" I flopped back into my seat and my mane cascaded over my face. I sighed and just left it there.

"It's okay Sugar. I didn't mean anything by that. If you want, I'll pay for your mane cut, considering you have no money whatsoever." She moved my hair out of my face and took the ribbon and somewhat pinned my mane back. I looked into the window and saw that pieces of it were bumped up, falling out, and not even in it.

"Promise me you'll never go into manestyling." I said, leaving her 'Masterpiece' alone. I wasn't in the mood to try and fix it so I just left it there.

"Haha! Don't worry! I don't think it's ever gonna happen!" she leaned back into her seat and brought out a pair of large headphones with a small radio attached to it.

"Where did you get that?" I asked leaning in to hear what's coming through the headphones. My parents never let me have one of these. They said that it was bad for my health and since I was working with water, they said it was pointless.

"I brought it from my old house. I decided I needed something to calm my nerves." She pushed her head near mine so I could hear more. The sound of soft music was coming through it, instantly soothing my soul into relaxation. All of a sudden it picked up speed and the sound of bass was coming through, almost like an explosion. It was pretty rad! I liked it!

"That's pretty cool! I'll have to get me one of those!" I said, a little too loud. But the song ended up slowing back down, calming our every nerve into slumber.

For the rest of the ride, we slept with the gentle music playing within our heads, letting us get the deepest amount of sleep we've ever gotten.

The train jerked to a stop, causing both of us to be flung onto the ground. We slowly stood up and looked out of the window. The small bustling town of Appleloosa was in view, making us giddier than we ever were. Vinyl stuffed her headphones and her small radio into her satchel and rushed towards the door, almost hitting other passangers on the way. I smiled a big toothy grin and ran after her, doing the same exact thing.

"This is it! I can smell it here! The smell of destiny calling!" She walked around and took deep breaths everywhere. "Or it could be just apples." I walked up to her and started laughing.

"You're acting like you've never smelled apples before." I said, noticing a small apple cart up ahead. My stomach gurgled with hunger. Come to think of it, we didn't eat at all today. "We could, you know, grab a bite before we find some place to stay for the night."

"Right in front of ya!" She ran towards the cart and looked at the pony, putting a closed sign up on his cart. I trotted up to them and my smile turned to a frown.

"I'm sorry little fillies! I'm closing for the night." He started packing up his apples which caused me to become a little desperate.

"Come on sir! We haven't eaten all day and we just want an apple." I said, giving him a begging look.

"Oh! Alright... Two bits for two apples." He handed us the apples and Vinyl handed him the money. "But don't tell anyone that I did that. People would hound me." I nodded and ate my apple up. This was probably the best tasting apple I've ever had.

"Alright. I say it's about... 8:30 at night. We might as well find somewhere to stay." Vinyl said, walking ahead. I followed her, walking right next to her.

Appleloosa at night is kind of like Ponyville, except a little smaller. They had a diner, another diner about to open up soon, apple carts, a hotel, and a mane salon. I'll definitely have to stop there before we leave.

We passed by the Salon and one of the girls in the window ran out and tackled me to the ground. The air left my lungs and I just laid there, looking at her.

"Excuse me! You look like you need a mane cut! Come with me!" She got up and pulled me into the shop. It was empty. There was only her there. I bet it was closed. She sat me in the first empty chair she saw and spun me around to look in the mirror. I noticed my hair was still in Vinyl's 'masterpiece' of a do and I blushed with embarrassment. I totally forgot about that.

"I just closed and I was about to go upstairs when I saw this monstrosity! I just couldn't let you walk out like that!" I noticed she had a pair of sparkly scissors as her cutie mark. She had a royal blue mane and a light blue coat. It looked rather fitting. "Oh! And my name is Sparkle Cut!"

She pulled my mane out of the ribbon and brushed through it, pulling out all of the knots. I saw Vinyl walk in and sit in the empty seat next to me and laugh.

"I guess my mane-do skills just don't work." Sparkle took my hair and wet it down, making it pin point straight before she started cutting it.

"Hey! Aren't you going to ask me what kind of mane-do I want?" I asked, looking up at her. She gave me a quizzical look and laughed.

"Oh honey! That's not how it works! I take what I think will look best on you and I know just the style that will look good with the fire in your eyes!" She began cutting again and I relaxed letting her do her job.

It felt like an hour of cutting my hair. Sparkle blow dried my hair and spun me back around to look in the mirror. The first thing I noticed was Vinyl laying in the chair sleeping, which made me laugh. Then my eyes connected with my reflection.

My hair was neck length with layers between my black and dark pink colors. I smiled at how perfect it was styled to go across my face and how it just made me. I felt ten times better after it! And I don't even have to wear a ribbon anymore!

"I love it!" I said, looking up at Sparkle. She smiled and woke up Vinyl. She jumped and fell out of the chair, making me laugh for a second time.

"It's all free of charge! Just don't tell anypony. You girls here alone?" She said. I noticed her sweeping up my hair from the floor and putting it in the trashcan.

"Yeah. We're on a journey to find ourselves. We just got into Appleloosa tonight." Vinyl said, wiping the sleep out of her eyes. Sparkle put the broom in the small closet behind the counter and leaned against it. She looked into our eyes and smiled again.

"Well, lucky for you girls, I have a spare room upstairs so you don't have to pay money for a hotel room. You'll need all the money you can get for this journey of yours!" She opened a door that had a large staircase leading upstairs. She walked up and turned around. "Well, come on now! I've got some dinner made upstairs!"

As the word dinner left her mouth, Vinyl and I ran up the stairs like a bunch of hungry cows. No offense to the nice cows I've met...

When we made it upstairs, there was a small room with a tv, a kitchen, a table with four chairs, and a couch that fit comfortably in it. There was one door on each side of the room that were the bedrooms. It was rather exquisite for coming out of Appleloosa.

I noticed a picture hanging on the wall of Sparkle and a stallion, putting their snouts together in a lovey fashion. It was rather adorable. I walked over to it and admired it.

"That was my husband. He was the greatest man I've ever known, but he ended up passing away in a railroad accident..." She walked over to the stove and hovered over it. She poured the broth into three bowls and sat two of them on the table. Vinyl and I walked over and sat in the chairs, drinking the delicious warm liquid. We sighed with content. "He was a railroad worker, fixing up tracks and such."

"He must have been brave for being a railroad worker." Vinyl said through gulps of broth. Sparkle smiled and handed her a napkin. "Thanks."

"You're welcome." She drank her broth from the counter and also sighed in content. "He was a brave man indeed." I finished my broth and wiped my mouth on a napkin close by.

"If you don't mind me prying, but you don't seem like you're from around here." I said, looking her in the eyes.

"You're correct. I'm not from around here." She smiled and picked up mine and Vinyl's bowl, putting them in the sink. "I'm from Manehatten. I moved here with my husband so that he could work his job and I could start my own salon." She walked over to one of the doors and opened it. "When you're ready to go to bed, your room is in here. The bathroom is the right door in your room. Goodnight, girls." She walked over to her room and closed the door.

Vinyl walked into the room first and plopped down on the bed. I laid down next to her and yawned deeply.

"Your mane is just amazing! I could get used to it!" She said, looking at it closely. I smiled and rolled over on my side, looking away from her.

"So what do you think we'll find here in appleloosa?" I asked, closing my eyes slowly. I heard Vinyl snoring soundly next to me. Boy, she literally went out like a light. I relaxed even more, listening to the soft sound of a cricket making it's nightly noise. Soon, I drifted off once again into a deep, deep sleep.
