Ok, with all the Ace Attorney fans here and the seemingly only one fan (me) of Professor Layton, I have decided to create a thread to figure out which one you guys like more and how many other fans of the two are here. So, just vote above and put reasons below.

I like Professor Layton more because I'm more into puzzles than court cases. I also like the dialogue, and the character and location design as well. And I LOVE the stories in Professor Layton and they interest me more than Ace Attorney's.

Though I will admit Ace Attorney tends to have better memes.

EDIT:

Well, I've recently played a bit more of Ace Attorney, and my opinions of it have changed considerably. However, Professor Layton is still my favorite. Anywho, I think each franchise does certain things better than the other, and vice versa. For example, I think Ace Attorney does characters better than Professor Layton (Professor Layton still has great characters though), and Ace Attorney does a much better job at making the puzzles (well, whatever you call the things in Ace Attorney) feel like their part of the story and they just flow better, while Professor Layton's puzzles often don't have much to do with the story.

However, I think Professor Layton tends to have better stories than Ace Attorney; don't get me wrong though; Ace Attorney has some great stories as well. As for music, I'd say they're both about equal.

In the end, I consider the games equal in terms of quality, but I prefer Professor Layton.

Oh yeah, forgot about music (Don't know how I could.) Professor Layton has some amazing music. Just listen to his main theme.

Very good, isn't it? And this isn't even the best theme! (Had to use live version as the normal one wasn't working. The normal is better in my opinion, but this one is still nice.)

Both are great. Where Layton has all kinds of adventures and travelling, Ace Attorneys have great courtroom drama (and some amusing moments). Both have puzzles, though Ace Attorneys' puzzles are more like logic and deduction than solving random puzzle questions.

My choice goes to Ace Attorney, because the cases are interesting and it's kinda fun trying to deduce what actually happened and who did it (and also yell OBJECTION!). In Layton games I noticed the puzzles were kinda repeating even though they got harder. While that's good for brain and all, I noticed I actually got bored of them. In other words they didn't keep me interested as much as the story did. Ace Attorney doesn't really suffer from this even though it's just finding evidence and notice who's lying and how, because things manage to keep themselves interesting.

For a second, I thought this was a thread about the crossover game. As for the one I like better, that's a tricky question. On one hand, I like the more adventure game style of the Ace Attorney game, but on the other hand, I love that feeling you get when you figure out a rather tricky puzzle in Professor Layton. But which one do I like the most? There's only one way to find out! Fight!

But seriously, I can't really pick between these two games.

Ace Attorney, absolutely. The puzzles and problem-solving in Professor Layton are all very instanced; you go from one separate puzzle right onto another. With Ace Attorney, you get the giant puzzles of cross-examinations and logic in the courtroom combined with investigations outside the courtroom. This fine-tunes your attention span - one detail could come in extreme handy later on, and the vast amount of elements which help you deduce the truth in the cases (in the forms of evidence, earlier testimonies and current testimonies) means that solving the puzzle is both much more challenging, and much more satisfying to pull off.

Ace Attorney also has a very memorable and extremely well contextualised OST; specific, and entire, themes play for even the slightest deviations in atmosphere both in and out of the courtroom; a contradiction in the courtroom has one theme, multiple in a row has another, a crucial contradiction where you corner your witness has yet another. It's all done in the name of atmosphere and creation of tension, and they did it superbly. Honestly, the only part of Professor Layton's OST that does it justice is the main theme. The rest doesn't augment the significance of a situation in the same way Ace Attorney does; at least not for me.

Not to mention that I vastly prefer the characters in Ace Attorney. They are wild, humorous and add flair to the courtrooms and investigations. There's a character for pretty much any situation; characters provide wonderful comic relief in the same way they bring a tragedy into the game's context, in the same way that they manifest into formidable villains. So much, in fact, that I distinctly remember a time where there was one villain (Kristoph Gavin) I wanted to punch through my DS screen.

the theme sound very similar to the night theme in sonic unleashed my good sir. but that is besides the point, in my opinion phoenix write is better than the professor because during the game play of the curious village the mysteries/puzzles didn't seem to have much of a challenge to them.

Yeah, I was aware the game too and thought it would be an interesting little reference and would make a good title as well.

Yeah, I enjoy those little "A-ha!" moments too.

You're not the only one. What he did was one of the most evil things I can think of. What's worse is that he used his own brother to execute his plan. I found myself hating the guy way more than another character.

Ah , I kind of saw what you did then! I still find it annoying that they haven't said anything about when it will be released outside of Japan (same with the second Edgeworth game).

I played both, but Ace Attorney is more my style :P it has more interesting characters and i love the gameplay in court (the finding clues thing, not so much). I think the real game we need to compare Ace Attorney to is Ghost trick (that would be a tougher choice for me :/ )

Still waiting on a NA release... I've been waiting for this since it was announced in Japan, this isn't even fair... :(

As for the poll, it's difficult... I like Layton a lot more than Phoenix as a character. Phoenix finds his way to the truth by pure persistance and trust in his client no matter what (well, except for one particular case where the client is guilty.) Layton's methods are a lot more conventional by using a sharp mind and critical analysis. He never loses composure and I think of him as sort of an empathetic Miles Edgeworth in a way.

In terms of the games though, I'm a huge Phoenix Wright fan. If I get stuck somewhere, I often just have to either pause and think about it or just push every possible answer. If I get stuck in professor layton, I usually end up stuck for days. It doesn't help that I'm a completionist either and want to solve every puzzle in the game.

... But you know what, I'm still sore over ace attorney investigations 2 not being localized. Plus, isn't not being able to brute force your way through a game good design and a positive aspect? So screw you, Capcom, Layton wins!

If it helps, there is a fan translation project with the second Ace Attorney Investigations that apparently has finished the first three cases. Though I think I'll wait for them to finish before getting it.

Oh yes, I'm very much aware of the fan translation project. I'm still debating whether or not to wait on them to finish the last case before trying it; I've managed to resist temptation and spoilers thus far (which I think is an all-time new record for me...)

*bursts in through the courtroom doors*

IM SORRY DID SOMEBODY PERFORM THE CALL OF MY PEOPLE

Professor Layton and Ace Attorney are two of my favorite video game franchises of all time.

Ace Attorney is the franchise that got me interested in forums and the internet and helped me expand my fandom horizons and made me the fanboy I am today. It's games are great, it's characters are phenomenal, and anyone who's gone through life without playing each and every one is missing out. Not to mention, it gave birth to my number 1 waifu, Maya Fey, so I hold this series in high regards.

Professor Layton has done absolutely nothing to influence me but nevertheless have presented me with amazing story-telling experiences with wonderful characters of varying artstyles and excellent steampunk-1800s setting and feel that should NOT be disliked, as well as (mostly) very good puzzles. Another great game.

So when I heard they were together, in a full-on crossover, I fanboyed so hard. My squees broke windows. I fell to the ground so hard it broke the floor. I rolled around like crazy and couldn't stop for weeks.

... Then we have April 10, 2014. The game's been out for over a year in Japan, Europe and its nearby continents have recently gotten the game, and North America has nothing but the release year.

I AM LIVING IN NORTH AMERICA DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I AM SUFFERING RIGHT NOW

But no matter... Trials and Tribulations such as these are what a fanboy such as I unfortunately must endure.

So for now, I'll just keep waiting...

EDIT:

... Oh, this isn't about the crossover. It's a poll. Right.

Still leaving my rant there, since I took a long time to write it.

Well, sadly, I can't really choose one or the other. Both are fantastic games, and I love them both to death. The music is great, the gameplay is great, and I confess I'm a bit biased toward Ace Attorney due to its indirect impact it's had on my life.

So for now, I shall consider it a tie.

I don't want to belittle Professor Layton, as secondary sources tell me it's a great series of games. But, based on what I played, here's my problem with it in allegorical prose.

WITNESS: Pheh. You're wasting my time. Ultimately, it boils down to one thing. You CAN'T prove that I was in the building before the construction finished. As long as that's the case, you've got nothing!

APOLLO: Ngh-...But!

PROSECUTOR: He's right, Mr. Justice. Last chance. Do you have anything in that thick skull of yours that proves the case?

APOLLO: (I have to do this...to prove Ms. Parey's innocence once and for all!)

*To win the case: Present evidence to prove the witness was at the scene!*

LUKE: Ah! Professor! They've raised the drawbridge!

THUG: AAAHahahah! You'll never get in now, Professor!

LAYTON: Ngh! We don't have time for this! The ceremony is going to take place any minute!

LUKE: What are we going to do, professor??

LAYTON: Hm. I need to think....and you know what helps me think? A completely unrelated puzzle.

*To see the next cutscene: What's 6 * 12 * 30 if gravity is reversed?*

Basically, I like seeing direct impact, consequence, and involvement of my actions in the story. Granted, you don't quite get "decisions" other than "wrong" decisions, but they're very relevant to what's going on - you are rewarded for paying attention to the story and noticing the details that are out of place.

Good news! While it does say it's a beta, the translation has been finished!
