For the past year, I've been working with my good friend from across the pond, Dj Mokram, directing a Gunstar Heroes remix album for OverClocked ReMix. I know not many of you are familiar with OC ReMix, and I know for sure that the vast majority of you aren't old enough to know what Gunstar Heroes is, but if you at least know about OC ReMix and their quality standards, you probably know that an OCR album release is kind of a big deal.

 

Gunstar Heroes is the debut game by Treasure Inc, released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in 1993. It featured cooperative side-scrolling shooter gameplay akin to Contra (fitting, considering Treasure was founded by ex-Konami employees) that was well ahead of its time. The music was ahead of its time as well, with Norio Hanzawa's compositions being some of the best music created for the Mega Drive/Genesis' sound chip.

 

Be Aggressive! is a community album created on a "gameplay concept". In our insistence on a sci-fi aesthetic and high-energy composition, we created an album that pays homage to the fantastic soundtrack, and embodies Gunstar Heroes not just in sound, but in feel as well, as if you're playing through the game as you listen to the album.

 

Gunstar Heroes is an under-appreciated title, and our remixer roster follows suit with that as well: Most of the 19 remixers featured on the album are relatively unknown in the VGM remix community, but are exceptionally talented musicians.

Gonna bump this thread with some info since the day is fast approaching:

1. The release date is a definite September 9th.

 

2. I will be hanging out with the guys at Nitro Game Injection on September 8th, 6 PM EST for a day-early listening party. You'll be able to ask questions and discuss the album in the chat room.
