Rarity's family

Enemy Stand

Recommended Posts

1.Why do her parents have Midwestern (or whatever) accents, she has a posh one, and Sweetie Belle has an American/Canadian/etc. one?

2. Do her parents live in Ponyville, or near it? Apparently, Sweetie Belle lives with them, but she is pretty much always in Ponyville, and goes to school there.

Rarity's from very humble beginnings apparently. Her parents are clearly not very fashionable and are portrayed as stereotypical "uncool" parents with Midwestern accents.

Rarity's exaggerated accent is something she puts on to sound more posh, basically. You'll notice in certain scenes she lapses out of it from time to time. She's always trying to look more high-class than she actually is (see "Sweet and Elite" for the ultimate examples) and is apparently somewhat ashamed of her background, so she talks and acts like a rich pony.

As for where her parents live, I'm assuming they must live somewhere in Ponyville, since Sweetie Belle goes to school there and lives with them.

I'm not really sure. Perhaps due to what we saw in "Sisterhooves Social", they never really cared much for formalities, unlike Rarity. Rarity maybe wanted to be more proper, and trained herself to speak that way. A more likely reasoning for this would be that Rarity's parents didn't grow up in an area with that kind of accent, but Rarity was born in a place where they have that accent and picked it up there. Then, they probably moved again to Ponyville, and Sweetie Belle was born there. Sweetie Belle picked up the american-like accent of Ponyville, and Rarity still had her accent.

Just my thoughts.

I don't know anything about the different accents. Rarity just does it most likely because it seems all the high class ponies do it. Or maybe thats her real accent.

As for where they live, I think they do live in Ponyville. In the episode One Bad Apple, we see the CMC at Sweetie Bells house after they lost their club house.

If you need more proof. We can see the mud pit that the CMC were going to land Babs in.

Take note of this scene from Rarity's story in Cutie Mark Chronicles:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iolsBLzo28

She speaks with her usual posh Mid-Atlantic accent at the start, but when she gets to the rock and loses her temper, she noticeably lapses out of it and talks with a "standard" American accent like Sweetie Belle's. There's other moments scattered throughout when she lapses in and out of her accent, but this is the most blatant.

She definitely just puts it on to sound classy.

Well from what I can gather from the show this is how it all fits togther her parents had the accent and so did she at one point OMG's right well it makes sense maybe she found she saw some rich ponies on a family trip and wanted to be like them after how she saw they treated her parents for there personally. Or found a mag at a store like playmare or something minus the porn and that made her go out and learn about the upper class. And they moved to ponyvile when sweetie bell was born boom there you go:) :) :) o and am sure they still live fairly close you see them after that in a cmc episode with babes seed by a mud pit the dad at least!!!

That's because Raritys parents are from Chicago and Sweetie Bell is adopted and nobody loves her....

*I'm just kidding... put down the noose* ;)

And for those that may get this reference...

She's a White Collier filly born into a Blue Collier family.

And honestly, I think that's one of the best reasons why I like her more then the others.

Some reason Dexter (the one from Dexter's Lab) has a French accent, but no one else in his family does. Bad writing! They thought, "hey that accent sounds good for Rarity, but not for her parents."

It's not bad writing, it's a very clever way of telling everything you need to know about Rarity's upbringing without going into detailed flashback. Rarity, ever since she was young, always wanted to be a high class fashionista, unlike her uncouth parents. The accent she puts on is fake and part of her attempt to aspire to be among the elite.

And Dexter's accent is Eastern European, not French.

Most theories I've heard that sound accurate are projecting the idea that Rarity became fascinated by the upper-class life of Canterlot somehow, and began imitating both higher manners and an accent.

A good theory I also liked, was her father treating Rarity like "Daddy's little princess" and her adopting such a role as a facet of her own personality.

I thought it was hilarious how the writers portrayed Rarity's/Sweetie Belle's parents in the show. I really like how they have a somewhat Canadian/Minnesota/Chicago sounding accent while Sweetie Belle speaks very plainly (like where I live in Southeast Michigan).

Rarity's accent, however, is finally called out, LOL.

Tabitha St. Germain said something about how the writers kind of "sprung the parents on her" in one of her interviews. I forgot which one it was but it was pretty funny. Does anyone else know what interview it was?

I also like how the parents aren't "Canterlot types" and seem a little odd.

To me it makes Rarity and her drama even funnier now.

I don't like any of the Mane 6 or their sister's parents.

Especially Rarity's and Scootaloo's.

Applebloom's mother was a good singer, but no country accent. Maybe Applejack is her real mother like I first believed
