So, I was, a few minutes ago, contemplating the meaning of life, the universe and everything, decided on 42, and then I started thinking about random MLP plot holes.

 

The one in particular I remembered for some inexplicable reason, was that in Hearth's Warming Eve, an event that happened long, long before Celestia and Luna's reign, Starswirl the Bearded already had Clover the Clever, an accomplished unicorn, as an apprentice. However, in Magical Mystery Cure, Celestia explicitly stated that Starswirl was her own pupil, which is impossible, because Starswirl is a unicorn, not an alicorn, much less a natural alicorn, and thus doesn't live forever.

 

There are only two possibilities I could think of. The first is that Starswirl was casting age spells on himself to keep himself alive perpetually. The second comes from It's About Time; Starswirl invented time spells. Yes, the scroll Twilight used was a one-time thing, and only lasted for a few moments, but what if Starswirl found a better time spell that allowed him to exist way back before Celestia was ever a princess - and still be her apprentice?

 

Perhaps I'm overthinking this and delving into headcanon territory, simply because I dislike excusing things as plot holes, but here are my two questions:

 

Is there any evidence to dispute this? And is there any other way that Starswirl could have been both alive long before Celestia's reign and be her apprentice at the same time?

I have heard possible ideas that Starswirl IS Discord.

 

Though it seems like a good explanation to some I'm just putting what I've heard out there.

Yes, I have heard this theory. Starswirl being Discord is certainly an interesting concept. I'm curious to see if the writers will steal the idea from the fans.

There probably is some evidence about Starswirl the Bearded living a long time before Celestia, and be her apprentice. So, there probably is some evidence somewhere.

I would actually like to see this theory put into the show. It would fill in the background of Starswirl as he seems like an interesting character (even if he isn't Discord)

Just pointing out the obvious here but Twilight was a Unicorn and she was Celestia's pupil, So I'm not entirely sure what your getting at with that statement.

I'm sorry but I just reread the transcript of the episode and there is nowhere stated that he was her pupil. Therefore, I think, your whole theory is collapsing. Sorry.

Also we have no real idea of how long regular ponies live. Look at Granny Smith she was part of the founding of ponyville but in Winter wrap up Twilight mentions that they have been cleaning up winter without magic for hundreds of years in Ponyville... that would make Granny Smith hundreds of years old and she's an earth pony. we have no idea what a unicorn or Pegasus life span is in this crazy world of talking Technicolor ponies . for all we know Celestia herself might be mortal just very long lived, and looking fantastic for her age I'd like to say.

 

also maybe Celestia and Luna had been around for a long time even teaching other ponies before they adopted the role of monarchs. also another discrepancy in "Hearts Warming Eve" is at the end of the play the flag they raise seems to depict Celestia and Luna... that's kind of odd.

I don't remember her explicitly stating that Starswirl was her pupil. There is the implication that she and Luna knew him personally, and that's about it. It could very well be the other way around, and Celestia was Starswirl's pupil. Or her father, as one fan-theory goes.
