So I just confirmed a hypothesis. Water filters do nothing to your tap water. I know this because I've run 5 gallons of filtered water through a new humidifier. And there are lots of mineral deposits on the heating unit. The only preventative measure for keeping a water heating unit (such as those found in humidifiers) clean is to use distilled water instead of filtered water or tap water.
