Philomena the Phoenix

child of the night

Celestia is keeping her as a pet but we've seen in "Dragon Quest" that they are wild creatures. They appear to be immortal and also capable of reproducing. You'd think an immortal species that can reproduce would have an EXTREMELY large population. So why not? A theory is that some creature (I doubt ponies; maybe dragons) went out to decimate their population. In some tellings of phoenix mythology it says that they eat gems which maybe why dragons dislike them (they don't want to share).

Philomena may have been orphaned and was taken care of by Celestia. Celestia may have felt an attachment to these birds, as they commonly symbolize the sun, and went out to protect the remaining population. Random side note: Phoenixes are AWESOME!

Hm, she should have a lot of character backstory regarding that she's about as long-lived as Celestia.

I'm thinking that Celestia found here a long time ago, perhaps even to the time when she was a filly. I can imagine like Fawkes from Harry Potter that Philomena must've been great importance to her and her quests over the years. Phoenixes are depicted to have amazing powers and luck to whoever comes across them, and are the symbol of the sun.

So, I hope they divulge into another pet episode because we really need to see Tank and Philomena again. A friend + princess pet playdate? Totally AWESOME.

I dont have to much info on her backstory but, I would love to hear more about how she came to be Princess Celestia's pet.

I think she was mostly in the show just for the sake of Fluttershy but, I think an episode that went into more depth on how she came to be and what not would be totally awesome.

I would say that Philomena might actually be as old, if not older than Princess Celestia herself. I mean, according to various myths and legends throughout history, phoenixes seem to always eventually grow old and then die as they burn into ashes, only to be born once again.

The show hardly said anything on her backstory, but I agree that it would be interesting for the writer's to go into more depth on the behalf of Celestia's pet.

Philomena is obviously the best troll  B)

But yeah, there's not much to say except for what's in the episodes.  You could expand on this by incorporating the mythology of Phoenix's in general to whatever headcanon you have, I'm sure the show doesn't conflict with at least 98 percent of it.

OC 2: Shimmering Grace

The gardens on the castle grounds contain a broad variety of animals. A few Phoenix families may inhabit the trees, along with the ordinary birds. I like to think that Celestia got Philomena from the garden after she grew up and no longer needed the care of her parents, and that maybe they met and bonded during a casual stroll Celestia took one morning after raising the sun.
