What would be the worst episode to watch first?

Double Jump

Recommended Posts

Pretty much all of my friends know that I'm a pegasister, but almost none of them were interested enough to try out the show for themselves. However, one of my male friends decided to watch a single episode on his own out of curiosity.

He just so happened to pick "Keep Calm and Flutter On" as his episode and unfortunately, he didn't enjoy it. I'm not sure if he appreciated some things about the show or if he otherwise might have liked it had he chosen a different one.

I loved that episode, but of course I'd watched the series perfectly in order. As great as "Keep Calm and Flutter On" is, it's probably the worst one to start with in my opinion. What do you guys think?

Games Ponies Play

I remember one of my favorite youtubers, ADoseOfBuckley watched this first and he wasn't amused in the slightest. Honestly, I have never laughed at the show...not even a chuckle, so this episode made things worse. I understand they wanted a funny episode before the Twilicorn transformation....but it could have been better.

I also showed my friend, The Show Stoppers, for her first episode..I have regretted it ever since. She watches the show with me, but isn't a brony...but that episode was an awful first impression.

100% agree! You're right, neither episode has a strong social message. They would be pretty rough starts, especially for those who aren't particularly fans of the show's style of humor.

The Mysterious Mare Do Well or the first two episodes.

First one is quite obvious, the second two because I strongly disliked them for being too...girly.

For me, I would say Swarm of The Century. I found that episode really annoying and it's probably my least favorite still, and that was the first episode I was recommended to watch. I would also say to not show a first time viewer Magic Mystery Cure for obvious reasons.

You didn't like Swarm of the Century? Aww, that's too bad.

I know a few people who are true Star Trek fans. They'd love that episode for being a superior version of "The Trouble with Tribbles."

I kinda agree but I don't believe girly is the proper term. It was just more childlike overall, with less references and allusions and a weaker sense of humor.

In fact, I have only recently gotten to season 2, and I can immediately feel the difference in the humor. It is a lot more raw and less forced.

But out of the episodes I have seen my absolute least favorite and thus the one I think would be the worst impression would The Show Stoppers as well. Utterly dreadful. Don't get me wrong, I like the CMC, but that episode was just so weak and painful to watch.

Mmm... Ticket Master. And Owl's Well That Ends Well. Those were very boring to me, and had really no intriguing aspects of the plotline. It did its job, but I tend to avoid those episodes when watching MLP.

Plus, humor is pretty key for bronies to get in that stuff. I mean, its not like the charming pink demeanour is gonna convert. :comeatus:

Pretty good choice, and I would watch them all in order, but if I had to choose the best one, it'd be a tie between A Return to Harmony and Lesson Zero.

Well, I know it will sound so obvious and a bit ridiculous but I'll say it nevertheless.

I strongly believe that watching Magical Mystery Cure first would be quite a dumb thing to do

Do I even have to explain  :muffins:

Of course, there's Alicorn Twilight. But the amount of musical numbers could also be a problem, as some people are often put off by songs in cartoons, and if our viewer is one of those people, we wouldn't want to give them the impression that every single episode is basically song after song.

Although I forget the name of it (As I hate it so much), it would have to be the one where they are doing a play. It was about the history of Equestria, so THEY SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED DISCORD. GRAHHH!!! Hmm... Yes... Plus, it didn't fit in well with the history. Instead of explaining everything, it just raised more questions! Where did the alicorn come from??? Sigh... Just... Just get that episode away. GET THAT EPISODE AWAY FROM ME JAKJDFJDIFJCNEINCNKCKKC

Boast Busters

To be honest, this episode was just not interesting to me, it was slow paced, trixie wasn't very likable here, and overall, it wasn't a great episode.

That, and no offense, about half of season 1, season 1 was mixed of good and bad episodes.

NEVER give an episode where the episode focuses on a certain character. You need a good introductory episode that highlights features of all the characters really well, like the season openers. In particular, I would go against showing the Season 3 finale because of how different it is from all the other episodes.

I know I hate on this episode alot but MMC both due to the fact that even if you have already watched the other episodes it is damn near impossible to tell what the frag is even going on and because since they don't really know who Twilight Sparkle is why should they care about her ascension?

I can say with experience that one of the worst episodes to start with would be "Look Before You Sleep", because not only was it my first episode, but it was also the episode that near turned me away from the show completely. Other than that,  I would avoid "Spike at Your Service" and "Mysterious Mare-Do-Well" as first episodes.

I watched the show by the order. That means I started with pilot two-parter. And I liked it. Futhermore, I think, the first episode is perfect as a pilot: in 20 minutes it does a gerat deal of exposition. That's how I, probably, became interested and wanted to see more.

So, pilot episodes may work for some people (like me) as first to watch.

Spike At Your Service. Nothing really happens in it. The whole episode felt like disjointed clips of various situations; you could make a meme out of it called Suddenly Timberwolf. Plus, it doesn't focus on a pony character; the moral isn't a good example of how meaningful the morals can get, the 3D animation of the Timberwolves isn't a good way to flaunt the animation (it should start with the quality of the 2D animation in the first episodes).

Besides from, say, Lesson Zero (instantly proves the show's awesomeness with the bear fight and the rainbow explosion) I would actually discount any and all episodes that aren't the first one. Anybody interested in it should start from there. I mean, only so many of us joined the fandom that way, right?

Of course, there's Alicorn Twilight.

It's not that at all.

It's just that as a finale the episode relies too much on what was shown previously, especially in character developement. Add the whole pacing issue, viewer, who've never watched any other episode will never understand what the hay is going on here, who are all these creatures and what is their problem anyway.

Although I forget the name of it (As I hate it so much), it would have to be the one where they are doing a play. It was about the history of Equestria, so THEY SHOULD HAVE INCLUDED DISCORD. Heart's Warming Eve. It's actually not about history at all. There is no more history in it, than in our Cristmass Story. Allusion of which, obviously, this apisode is.

So, it doesn't include: Discord, alicorns, griffons and other evolved animals (who should fight ponies for the rest of recources when that Ice Age came). And sure more other things. Because it wasn't the point of the Heart's Warming Story.

I also really liked the first 2 episodes! However, I'll admit that compared to some of the later episodes, they're a tiny bit weaker.

What I don't get is why people didn't like The Ticket Master. After the pilot episodes, I wasn't quite hooked, but I was intrigued enough to continue watching to see what a "regular" episode was like. I loved The Ticket Master so much that it single-hoofedly converted me into a pegasister! To this day, one of my all-time favorite episodes.

Probably, because it's "girly" and "mundane"

It differs why people watch the show. I myself whatch it partly because it's about girls doing their girly stuff. Real stuff: not just shopping, gossip, and boys. So I have no problem with a "girly and mundane" episode. In my list Ticket Master falls into "remarcable episode" category. It's important (it shows other sides of Mane Six and early problems of getting together as a group) and enjoyable.

lol, oddly enough that was the first episode I saw(first hit on youtube as it had just come out).  I turned out alright, ^_^. 2nd was Sleepless in Ponyville, and then I watched the whole series in order... many times, I've lost count, lol.

Anyway, my vote for worst episode to watch first is Look Before You Sleep, the AJ and Rarity sleepover episode. Still my least favorite episode, partially due to that insanely awkward ending >_< lol.
