What if a russian calls Twilight and Rainbow by their "other names"?

InvaderShy

Recommended Posts

If you didn't know it, the Russian names of Twilight Sparkle and Rainbow Dash are these: (Сумеречной Искоркa) Sumerechnoi Iskorka and (Радуга Дэш) Raduga Desh.

And knowing these names I was wondering:

How would Twilight and Rainbow react if a russian, who hasn't yet mastered the English language, tells them: "So, you must be the printsessa Iskorka. And you must be Raduga Desh."?

Note: Printsessa (Принцесса) is how you say "princess" in Russian.

So, what kind of comments would come from the two ponies at the moment they hear those names?

What would they say?

I guess they both would be clueless, unless they were fluent in Russian, which I doubt. Well, Twilight does enjoy reading, so maybe she read some Russian books and is somewhat fluent in the language. I don't know. I have to admit though, Raduga Desh sounds hardcore, man. B)

Her Highness (Celestia) would say:

- Are you an orthodox christian? Why don't you call your Saint Apostle Peter "Apostle Stone"?

And why don't you call you famous poet Alexander Pushkin "ProtectorOfMen Pushkin"? Since it's what those names mean in greek.

Raduga Desh sounds hardcore, man

Some people wanted to push it further - just for lulz. So, they suggest the name for Fluttershy - Дрожащий Стыд.

1. literally it means Shivering Shame.

2. It sounds like..."drozhashshy styd?" Hell, I can't even transcribe it properly into english: you don't even have letters for those sounds ('ы' & 'ж' ).

THAT'S HARDCORE.

Something strange going here, a lot of people know Russian language, lets assume that they all Russians, but it's very early morning in Russia now or even a night somethere. The heck is going on?

Well we could go even further - how about Pinkie Pie? - Rozoviy Pirog!

And Dr.Hooves? - Doctor Ktopito!

And Luna? - Luna! :)

Yes, I'm russian but I live in germany.

And I couldn't sleep because of Moscov mayer election: I was interested how much will Alexej Navalny get and what happens further. Whether do they send him to prison after all.

Doctor Ktopito!
I've seen it. That was a good one, actually.

That is just the pronunciation, it is like saying any word in a different language

1- it could be a cognate.

2-it could sound similar.

3-it could sound completely different .

My knowledge of Russian is minimal, however, being active on Russian Forums and particularly a Russian-Speaking World of Tanks clan has helped.

Well, it's a lot of fuss about frauds in election but I think it was almost honest - I got friends who worked as a volunteer on the elections and they was participated in calculations - they say that final attitude is almost the same as at their election points. Idk about prison yet.

Well Yeah I agree, but sounds funny :)

through a german language.
"Funken-im-Dämmerung"? "Regenbogen-Strich"? Oh, nein!

but I think it was almost honest
I watched the results of "independent observers" on TV-Rain ("Дождь"). It looks like oficials fixed about 2% for current mayer - just to get him over 50% and avoid second round.

Russian-Speaking World of Tanks

So, you are a брон-и than.

I explain for non-russians: for russians the word "brony" sounds similar to russian word "броня / bronia" which means "armour".

Yep that it, and that not the bad thing - second round would change nothing, and like that we saved a lot of money which otherwise would be spent on further elections.

Oh my gosh :) Idk why they translating the names...

About the same as they would being talked to in any language other then their native language, unable to comprehend it. So just clueless.

Its the same as if someone talked to me in a foreign language, i wouldn't know what they where saying, so i'd be clueless.

It doesn't really matter if its russian or spanish or whatever, just a language they don't understand.

I don't even know if Russian exists in Equestria. And even with as much reading as Twilight does idk if shes ever learned any foreign languages really.

So yeah, they'd just be clueless, thats it, i don't see much else to it ;p.

Doctor Ktopito

My wife took Russian back in high school, and wonders if it shouldn't be technically Doctor Ktopita (for the plural)? And, out of curiosity, does the pun 'who' + 'hooves' = 'whooves' really work in Russian (Kto + Kopita = Ktopita)? Not knowing the language myself, I'm always curious if these puns translate or not.

French exists. So there's a chance other languages do as well. If they do, I'm sure Twilight knows just enough to recognize the family of languages it belongs to, if not exactly which language. It'd be like her.

Yeah she is right, but the thing is that it's not "who + hooves" in hts Russian name but "who + hoof" and that whoud be "Kto + Kopito", so that's the answer :)

TBH I'd ask first if the ponies speak english at all...

Gotta figure, not always do different species/peoples speak the same language in many shows/movies/books. But it is "translated" for the purpose of allowing the viewer/reader to understand it clearly.

One example is an anime I watched a bit ago, It's mentioned a character speaks great "Japanese" despite listening to the dub version in english.

(I think the series "BECK" has a few examples of this where they try to communicate with foreigners)

Another is in the book series "Dragon Riders of Pern" where the computer, found by the inhabitants of pern CENTURIES after the original colonists settled and left, couldn't recognize the "slurred" speech the people now use.

So who's to say equestrian is actually the same as english? :P\

And what would they think if ANYONE spoke to them in a human language?

I don't remember french in the show, but maybe i just am forgetting.

Only foreign language i remember in the show is Zecora's language or whatever.

But if they do exist then its likely others exist.

Twilight would be the mostlikely one to recognize it, maybe Zecora, but mostlikely not, she probably wouldn't be fluent, seeing as becoming fluent in a language takes a good bit of time. Heck learning it takes a good bit of time.

Tecnically your wife is right: it should have 'a' at the end because of plural. The problem is, that both variants sound the same in russian.

Whether the pun works? Yes, and well, it's the best you can do: most puns a just lost in translation.

Well, i thought this aswell, but the thing is the show isn't anime its an English based show. So idk.

Also in EqG's the humans of that alternate world had no trouble speaking to or with twilight and Twilight had no issues either, so i'd assume since thats the closest we get to the human world, and the human world would be where English is spoken. so I think the ponies speak English judging from that.

Yep. When Applebloom was under the influence of the cutie pox, she spoke French very clearly. Applejack called it 'speaking fancy', so it at least exists as a language that Applejack thinks is 'posh'... or maybe Fancy is the actual name of the language in Equestria.

I think you missed the point.. that was just an example.

So are the dragon riders book (english) and StarTrek, but they also have similar happenings when dealing with non-english speaking groups (Why would a klingon speak english when no human is around to allow understanding?)

Even Star Wars only calls the language commonly used as "Galactic Basic" not english.

Who's to say thats not some other language itself as well?

As to EG, its an alternate reality to Equestria, so likely they'd share the language as well. OR, given the portal changed Twilight and spikes appearance, and species, its also likely it changed their speech patterns as well.

Not definite of course.

Oh yeah i forgot about that, well then its entirely possible Russian and other foreign languages exist in Equestria.

Thank you for reminding me.

True, i guess you have a point there.

Thing is theres no for sure way to tell whether or not the ponies are infact speaking english, since we've never been told what language they speak or anything in such a case as star wars, or really even had many instances with foreign languages being used in the show.

I guess you have a point with EqG's seeing as if it can change their apperance i guess it wouldn't be surprising to change their language, or they could possibly share a language.

its kinda one of those things you won't ever really truly know i don't think. Well unless someone asks it to one of the show creators or something ;p.

But you have some good points.

I'm not much of a linguist by any means, however I don't think proper nouns work that way. A Rainbow may be called Raduga in Russian, however if one were to refer to Rainbow Dash the character, I would assume they'd refer to her by her name in English, as a result of her origins in the United States.

Of course, if they happen to refer to them by their names in Russian, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to decipher. Even if the person in question doesn't point, I believe 'Printsessa' and the general sound of 'Raduga Desh' would clue the two in as to what he's trying to say.

"Sumerechnaya Iskorka" and "Raduga Desh" are Karusel's translations. I'm Russian myself and I don't like Karusel much.

Karusel is a Russian children channel.
