gaming The Ouya: Good or Bad?

I can't be the only one who's seen advertisements for this thing.

For those that haven't, the Ouya is advertised to have hundreds of games that are free to try. But, after skimming through the game selection on their website, the majority of the games I've seen are one's I've never even heard of. They're probably mostly indie games, and, in all honesty, I'm not as in touch with that kind of stuff. The only indie games I've played are Braid, Super Meat Boy, and the Binding of Issac (That game is freaking weird, by the way)

For those that have seen this thing, what impression did it leave on you?

it runs on android, wich means you can play phone/tablet games on your television.

i think it's pretty cool, but it's not worth the pricetag. i can play android games on my phone too.

also, pretty much every review says the D-pad is pretty crappy, so the quality is questionable too.

No, not really. The Ouya has been involved in scam after scam and the people behind it don't understand their own audience as demonstrated through them producing an shock video as an experimental ad and hoping that consumers would not notice the unusually quick funding for Giridion Thunder and Elementary, My Dear Homes. Games already available for it aren't even that great, you literally have a $99 console with a library of 273 games, 271 of them bad.

Oh, and it's trying to solve needs nobody has. Who would really want to play Android games on a TV? Those are better on what they were designed for, phones and tablets.

The problem I have with the Ouya is that it built to run Android games. And Android games aren't meant for big screens. They're SUPPOSED to be portable.

I was watching a clip of the motely fool where he said he was trying the thing out and the game crashed on him twice in a half hour.

he seemed positive, I don't like starting over when I die, much less when a game screws me LOL.  you got 100 bucks to blow?

I mean if you do give it a shot but I'd say nay.

I never found the Ouya to be that impressive, really... Android games are not exactly designed to be a sort of thing that you play on a console, they keep you entertained for around 5 minutes and then keep going about your day. As far as the console goes, it's alright I guess. It fulfils its purpose, but I could think of much better things to spend $100 on.

Actually, this thing holds 433 titles on it.

Yeah, I counted.

A lot of them are shit, with the exception of the classic Sonic titles and Towerfall.

Then it has 431 bad games now. That's still not a great track record for something that's trying to compete with the "big" boys of console gaming.

Well, let's see, we've got all of the classic Sonic games on Android and Towerfall.

That would mean that this thing has about 425 terrible games rolled into one.

Yeah, there's no way this thing is going to ever hope to compete with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft if they have THAT many bad games available for their platform. Hardware specs are unimpressive too... the Tegra 3 is a really, really bad processor, for example. It also has only 8GB internal storage, which is going to fill up quickly with some games (especially ones that require gigabytes and gigabytes of storage.) It also has HDCP enabled on its single HDMI port, which defeats the purpose of being an "open" system if it has DRM enabled on its hardware.

You know I dunno about you guys, but I actually kind of want one of these. I know that you guys hate the specs and all, but to me this is an interesting little console. Yes the specs are bad, I will give you that, but with a lot of the games on there being completely free you know hey I'm not complaining. Besides, it is waaaay cheaper than the other consoles, which okay yeah a lot of that goes that it has craptacular specs but if by any chance I wanted to bring something small and portable to my friend's house and say play some old games on an emulator I could easily hook this thing up instead of either going through the process of softmodding a current gen console or going though the sometimes pain in the ass way of hooking up my computer to the television and then having to configure every controller and eaauughhh.

Just editing my signature to say that my behavior on here was cringe. I don't regret the friends i made but man i was cringe here

This would be perfect for people like me who don't, and probably never will, have an android phone but want to play android phone games for series' that we like. But if everything on there is free than I'm almost certain none of the games I would want, if any, would make it on there anyway.

This machine has A LOT more going for it than just simple Android games. The Ouya is completely open, the developers of it are fully welcoming the modding community and indie devs. Plus, there is also the fact that it can run emulators incredibly well, as I have seen videos of it running PS1 games with ease. So, it's total worth is kinda in the hands of the public and what THEY do with it. If you are buying this strictly for it's 'exclusive games' then you are probably buying for the wrong reason. I actually think it is a nifty looking device for it's price.

It doesn't seem that great to me. An all-digital console with only a library of Android games and open source stuff just isn't gonna attract a wide audience. I don't see the thing doing well at all, in the end it'll definitely end up being very niche.

Be actually been looking into developing a game for this console, as it runs android it would be quite easy to develop it for Ouya then port it over to android phones too. I've even written out a concept page for it and got together a small team of us who want to give it a go ^^

The problem with running Android is that people will port android phone games to the console, rather than developing them for the console itself, there's nothing wrong with games that would be developed for the Ouya rather than ported to it

The Ouya to me is more of a great idea that was horribly executed. All they have that is good is the old Sonic titles and Towerfall, as someone said earlier.

I think if they would have had a better library of Indie games, it might would have been decent.

Well, I'm actually kind of thinking about getting one of these things at some point or another, just to own it.

I mean, I've been wanting to emulate something like Infinity Blade for YouTube for quite a while now.
