Well, in the beggining of the Roman Empire the emperor was actually called the principate, which means something along the lines of "first among equals" (Nature's Spell was nodding to this maybe). So.... ugh. I don't really know, there really is no real reason why Celestia or Luna wouldn't be reffered to as Queen in-universe. Equestria is called a Kingdom but a more accurate designation would be Principality (All Hail the Principality of Equestria! :yay: ) since the heads of state are Princesses. And theory #1 would be the most logical explanation, if it where not for the fact that the only "rulers of Equestria" that we know of (and they could come up with something to fill this problem but it would likely just cause more) would be the three leaders of the three tribes of Ponies mentioned in "Hearths Warming Eve", Discord (I use the term ruler loosly with him), and then the two Sisters. So I don't really think that leaves alot of room for the whole "the once and future King (or Queen)" thing unfortunately.

I know there's a place you walked
Where love falls from the trees
My heart is like a broken cup
I only feel right on my knees.
I spit out like a sewer hole
Yet still receive your kiss
How can I measure up to anyone now
After such a love as this?

So far, the only thing I know is that Alicorns are Unicorns who have magically ascended. Princess Platinum's father was a king, but he ruled a different region. Since Princess was the highest title of among nobility Unicorns in the Equestria region, it seems Princess was adopted.

I just believe that Princess is the highest title there is in Equestria for traditional reasons, similar to how Prince is still the highest title in countries like Liechtenstein and Monaco.

They are not necessarily proper heirs to the empire.  They are ruling in the stead of Princess Celestia, which would make them viceroys.  This also makes Equestria an empire ruling over the Crystal Empire.  Try to wrap your head around that!

By this, The Crystal Empire really isn't as much a separate country from the rest of Equestria as New York is from the United States. That makes perfect sense to me, maybe more fodder for headcanons.

I think #3 because in ancient human history A princess can not become a queen until they marry a prince/king

but this is with ponies so....

I have two thoughts on this. My first is just a slight variant of the first from the OP: the royal family either never truly existed or was fully wiped out before they took power. Celestia and Luna have no royal blood (or are lower royals), and they merely seized power after defeating Discord, but only took up the title of princess either out of respect for their predecessors or to avoid upsetting their subjects by making their rule appear short term (relating to the second theory). My other thought (which works well with Hasbro's reason) is that Equestria and neighboring lands had a history of tyrannical monarchs (King Sombra and Queen Chrysalis are canon examples), so when the throne passed to the sisters, they kept the title of princess to avoid being painted as tyrants and a potential uprising (making it propaganda)

I read that Faust wanted Celestia to be a queen but Hasbro said, no since due to Disney, the Queen title means an evil person, unlike princess which are always good.  Guess some high up folks at disney needs to go and talk or spend some time with Queen Elizabeth the second.  If she is evil it's very well hidden.

As for Alicorns being only Unicorns who ascended, there is a book that Hasbro says is canon where it's revealed that Princess Cadance was originally a pegasus.

When Equestria was formed, they had to decide on the government. It was either Monarchy, Stratocracy, or whatever the Earth Ponies had at that time which is likely democratic in small scale.

Theory #1-"Queen Celestia" doesn't have a ring to it. XD

Theory #2-The "Queen" status is like sterotype for evil ruler (something like that)

Theory #3- Tia and Wuna's mom was the Queen and they decided that once she died they didnt want to replace her.

simple, during early makings hasbro thought "Queen" meant evil. Therefore they decided to have her named "Princess celestia" it would have been nice to see Queen celestia tho :p

Edit (Clear up on my end, Hasbro thought that kids would think if she was called "Queen Celestia" She would be evil, I would have loved to see Queen Celestia again tho XD)
