Do you think Applebloom thinks of Applejack as a mother figure?

I'm writing a fanfic about Applebloom and Diamond Tiara, drawing parallels to them and having them resolve their differences. In it I have DT jealous of Applebloom because of the closeness of their family while she gets a lot of toys and goodies, but no real love, like hugs, etc.

 

In my story, Applebloom's mother is dead as a result of a death by birth scenario, where she spent the last of her time just holding onto her newborn and wishing for the family to take care of her. The dad had a breakdown, and run out of the hosital and got in an accident.

 

At first Applejack hated her new sister, feeling that she was wholly responsible, until Big Mac talked some sense back into her(ala Ponyville Confidential style) causing her to change her opinion and start treating her sister properly as their mother wished, with Applebloom telling her at one point that she sees her like a mother with the way she takes care of her and since she doesn't have one anymore herself.

 

So now that it's almost done I'm wondering how other people feel about the AB/AJ relationship. Is it simply sisterly, or is it something deeper? Does Applebloom see her as a mother figure? Does Applejack see her like a daughter? They have been commented to be as much like one pony as two.

 

According to another topic I made Applejacks feelings on their lost parents is a pretty common fanfic material, but Applebloom doesn't get that much attention on the subject. Now, I don't know if that's actually the case of not, not keeping up too much with fanfics, so it'd be interesting if I brought something new to the table.

I would say so, since she looks up to her for advice. Ah, how I hate this character limit...your fanfic sounds really good, but it's also sad. :'( I can't imagine Applejack hating Applebloom....

No, I don't. I am pretty sure Apple Bloom sees Applejack as just her sister. To me, it's shown pretty clear when you watch Bridle Gossip. (I mean, Apple Bloom acted in a way that showed how they were sisters. Look at the scene where Apple Bloom puts Applejack down on a tree when she's tiny for example)

 

Hm but maybe it's a bit yes and no. Since Apple Bloom's parents aren't alive, she Applejack has taken care of her (and granny smith). Did I just change my mind..?

Nah. Because of granny smith being present and also because if she started thinking that of Applejack then what would she think of Big Mac? She clearly loves and cares for Mac as a brother, Applebloom probably just bonds abit more to AJ being there both fillies and boys have cooties or something haha.

I think she sees granny smith as a mother figure, she was seen embarrassed by her sometimes and we all were embarrassed by our moms at some point as children

Yes and no, yes because Applejack and Big Mac did help raise her and still are Applejack is in a way a mother figure to her even if she is not her mother. Applebloom of course knows that Applejack is not her mother but since she is the closest thing she has to a mother she in a way kind of is. We have seen aspects of both a sisterly and mother like relationship between them in the show and we will likely see more of that.

I agree. Her actual parents weren't there during AJ's flashback in Cutie Mark Chronicles, which is when Applebloom was probably a baby, so Granny Smith was most likely the parent figure in the family during most of AB's life.

Apple Bloom didn't grow up with a mother and father. She was likely just an infant when they passed away. So because Apple Bloom is unaccustomed to having a mother, she does not know what a mother is really like, therefore she sees Applejack as just a wonderful sister because she doesn't really know what a mother is.

 

Applejack definitely does treat Apple Bloom like more than just a sister. She comforts Apple Bloom when she's down and she even scolds Apple Bloom when she misbehaves, even going so far as to tell her to go home. In addition, she is very protective of Apple Bloom. AJ was worried sick when Apple Bloom went to go meet Zecora for the first time, and when Apple Bloom was struggling with Cutie Pox, Applejack was panic-stricken much like a fearful mother would be. Applejack is usually the one who keeps an eye on the Cutie Mark Crusaders when they're together, and she is mature enough to keep them out of mischief. Applejack told the CMC that they could have avoided conflict with Babs Seed if they had only come to her with their problem in the first place, which is the kind of advice or lesson that a mother would be likely to share with a child. Applejack happily let AB sleep in her own bed. She even tucked her in with a very warm and loving smile on her face - very reminiscent of a mother.

 

I don't even think Applejack realizes she's motherly. To AJ, she's just trying to live life right, be supportive of her family, and protect the kin that she holds so dearly. One could argue that AJ's just a really awesome sister, but even so, she does a lot of things that would be more typical of a mother and that's not surprising, as Granny Smith can't be there all of the time.

Well, if it makes you feel better, Applebloom also can't imagine it. She states that she was young enough that she doesn't even remember the time Applejack hated her, and can only remember amazing times with her sister. It was only for a short time anyways. Like maybe a month at most. While that part is a bit tearjerking, Applebloom forgives Applejack and helps rid her of her oldest shameful feelings and become closer for it.

 

To everyone else, we don't see enough of Granny Smith to know how Applebloom feels about her outside of Family Appreciation Day. We do at least know she still looked as old now as she does at present.

 

Given some peoples responses, I feel I should clarify my thoughts. I'm not saying that I think Applebloom solely sees her sister as a mom, and the only thing stopping her from calling her that in the show is that they can't say her parents are dead because it'd be too depressing. I'm more saying that she sees her sister in equal ways an amazing sister as well as a motherly figure when needed. They can play and romp and argue like sisters, but when it's needed Applejack takes a different approach to caring for her sister. Applejack becomes whichever one her sister needs more at the moment.

 

Given that they're not there for Applejack's send-off in the flashback from Cutie Mark Chronicles, it's possible they were already dead. At the least, their mom had to have been dead from birth of shortly after Appleblooms birth. You could say that the Dad was caring for Applebloom, which was why they didn't show up, but it kinda seems a bit off for a close-knit family like the Apples to not all be there for her send-off. But now I'm getting into another discussion entirely.

I don't think so. If Applebloom did see Applejack as her mother, I feel like AB would would listen to her more often and would refer to her as mother and not sister.

 

Another thing we need to remember is baby ponies develop much faster than a human baby. My own theory is, after a month a baby pony well already be at toddler level. Seeing as in the episode, Baby Cakes, Pound and Pumpkin were already able to do many things and I believe determine that Mr. and Mrs. Cake were their parents. What I'm getting at is, baby ponies can maintain information.

 

Now the only way this does not work is if AB mom died while giving birth to AB or do baby ponies still maintain this information when they get older.

 

Still if AB mom did not die from giving birth and died only 3 or 4 months after that, AB would still have the knowledge of who both of her parents are and titles of each family member.

Thank you! I wrote a different topic one day because I noticed one of the nurses at the hospital bears a striking resemblance to Diamond Tiara's color design. It was going to end at that, but then some people who liked the idea said that it could add more to her character as the nurse in question was such a nice person.

 

And then the spark happened, the story beginning to form itself in my head. Usually that's all it takes. Once something catches, it;s like an inferno and the whole story starts to play out in my head. So the idea is all my own, but I owe my inspiration for it to the forums. I love you guys.

It's about 80% done, so as soon as I finish I will gladly post it. I have another user waiting for it already.

Well we don't KNOW that Scoots is an orphan. Thats just the general fanon on her since she doesn't have a sister in the mane 6 so her family isn't as important.  In the show they don't say it,but one of the writers confirmed that the shooting stars that appeared from Apple Family Reunion were meant to represent her parents, along with several other hints to that effect.

 

As for Sweetie Belle she lives with her parents, not Rarity. That one time she showed up Sweetie Belle brought over everything but the kitchen sink to Rarity's while her parents went on vacation.

 

The general theme of the show is focusing on the younger ones, which is why the parents don't show up too often. I don't think it has any relation to them being blank flanked.

Well, I usually reread the new parts I have written to check for errors. I don't know if you do any writing yourself, but I tell you no matter how many times I reread my work, if feels like there is always ONE more thing I missed, sometimes one that completely bypassed my attention because I read a word automatically. I don't know why it it, but I find I catch a lot of my mistakes MUCH easier when it's printed out and I'm reading it rather than on a screen.

 

I'm glad you're so anxious to read it. I'll make sure to give it my best. I don't like to rush my work, either. I have to be in the mood to right, and it's getting pretty close to the endgame. Right now I'm finishing up the ending, then I have to do the beginning and it'll be done. Basically I write the sections that appeal the most to me at the time, so when I first started writing this one it was in the middle.

I don't think Applebloom sees her as a mother figure. Applebloom often calls Applejack "'Sis" for one thing. Furthermore, Applebloom already has Granny Smith for that. If Applejack were a mother figure for Applebloom, then she would act much differently than what she's been doing throughout the show.

Apple Bloom does look up to Applejack as a sister to her, of course. But, I feel that Apple Bloom looks up to Granny Smith more as a mother figure because, she is very wise and helpful.
