Is anyone else disturbed by Zecora's voodoo stuff?

Nah, I don't find it anymore disturbing than Twilight's magic or the presence of magic in general in the show. It is not like Zecora shrinking heads or anything, if anything she is a toned down shaman/witch doctor way way toned down. But Zecora is still awesome anyway and I hope we see more of her in season 4.

No, not at all. I don't know if that's even the intent because a lot of Voodoo imagery is derived from African tribal symbolism and she IS supposed to be from the pony equivalent of there. That's probably why it's there, it's stuff from her homeland and symbols that were important to her people.

I don't know why it should be offensive in the first place. The religion isn't an inherently evil one.

What exactly is the voodoo stuff you're referring too?

Most of it just looks like miscellaneous traditional African items or totems (Voodoo DOES have African roots, if that's what you mean).

I might be disturbed if I saw a voodoo doll, but only because that would be out of Zecora's personality.

If you mean the potions and stuff like that, well the rest of the universe has magic amulets and spell books.

Nothing different except that you drink a potion.

I agree with ShadoBabe. What exactly are you talking about? The character of Zecora is herself a archetype of the mystical "medicine women" and I honestly enjoy her and wish she wasn't so one dimensional. Her VA seems like a fun and talented lady and would benefit from more material.

Heck no, Zecora's stuff is awesome! If anything, its part of why i'm so drawn to her. (Zecora is best pony)

The "voodoo" stuff is part of who she is. besides, its hardly voodoo. we've never seen her use her skills to harm anypony.

I would love to see how she would defend herself, actually. Of course, if she had no other option but to fight, since she doesn't seem like she would want to fight.

Zecora would probably kick ass in battle

I approach things with a clean mind, so no I am not at all disturbed by the magic portion or the vine plants, we just need to ignore such nonsense.

Amen. There are some not very clean ponies on some other forums. I like to think I can take a joke, but some stuff goes too far.

Well, I'm not really into all this african mumbo-jumbo.

But "woodoo staff" - those are such harsh words! Such accusations!

Zecora has never risen any zombie-pony!

No not really, I mean I wish they gave her character some more depth and maybe a different background story and well rounded occupation, but she's basically an expected African stereotype. They didn't give her enough background, she has no family that they know of, her place of origin is 'a far away land', and all of the things in her cottage/hut are from various cultures and tribes.

She's basically Equestria's version of Africa shoved into one being. So no, her voodoo 'stuff' isn't disturbing, it's what's expected.

I dunno. The obsessive-compulsive (literal) in me wonders if it's best for kids to even introduce the subject of voodoo, even without zombies or dolls, to kids. Even if such things aren't displayed directly, it's one more step into messing with that stuff.

People said the same thing about Harry Potter yet I am not seeing an epidemic of witchcraft among children. I think if we talk down to kids like they are idiots than it just becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. But if we make it clear that it is just entertainment than most of them will understand that.

Point of interest: That one becomes even more absurd once you realize JK Rowling is a fairly devout Christian.

I don't see where that's bad per say. That's like saying you shouldn't show Christian imagery lest someone be tempted to worship Satan.

I think I'm starting to get an idea of what kind of person you are.

Firstly, the Voodoo you're talking about is mostly an invention of Hollywood intended as a generic "evil cult" archetype. Secondly, you sound suspiciously like those people who think Harry Potter teaches witchcraft and Satan worship. If that's the case, I suggest taking a big step back and rethinking the way you look at other religions.

Thirdly, if you're inclined to open your mind, I also suggest that you take a close look at the following links, maybe you'll learn a thing or two:

Oh, please don't take me to have a discriminatory or racist attitude here. As I said, I have OCD, and this has been an overriding thought for 2-3 days. I wasn't knowledgeable on this subject, and I tried to phrase my question such that I would be informed. I'm sorry if I offended.

I don't understand the question, or if it's rhetorical. In any case, it's not necessarily an argument "I" would make; it wouldn't get out of my head until I talk/worked through it.
