technology Looking for a Better Computer

The more ram sticks you have the more likely an unstable OC will occur but it's best to fill out a channel at least.

Okay. Didn't know that. Thanks for the info lol Well, knowing that, I guess it's a good thing I'm not into overclocking then.

I refuse to let go until you're impressed.

Agreed, if the computer is going to be almost completely dedicated to gaming without streaming, go for the i5.

If your are going to game, and stream them, go for a i7, or the cheaper 8350.

I always seem to opt for AMD builds because I am going to be honest here, I am quite poor.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have started to put a list up of things that if you wouldn't mind, for you to look over. (There's something messing up with the "Wish List" right now, so I have to break this into several parts.)

Here's the majority of the items: https://secure.newegg.com/WishList/MySavedWishDetail.aspx?ID=18411134

- For the 1TB drive, would I be able to add that on as a slave drive to my current master drive? I know how much of a pain it is to transfer most of the data over.

- Would this case work as far as for room? Or would I need something larger?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 (RAM)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817394106 (Additional USB Hubs)

- So that I can be able to plug in things like my drawing tablet, and Oculus Rift as well as my mouse and keyboard (Both are USB)

So is all of this compatible? I haven't selected an OS yet, so what are you opinions on that? As for CD drive, I think I'm just going to rip out my current one, it seems to work fine for most everything. Can't think of anything else atm, so... Anything else am I forgetting?

The Wishlist link doesn't work.

To be quite honest, you really are not going to see any difference between DDR3 1600, and DDR3 1333.

But if you want to stay with it I won't try and force ya. Just saying you can save $10 by getting the DDR3 1333 over the 1600.

Also I recommend something better for a USB hub, never really liked Belkin stuff, and those external ones take up an outlet, and flop around unless you fasten them down with velcro or something.

I recommend this, it fits into one of your disc drive bays and gives you more usb ports than you will ever need.

I don't even notice a difference between DDR3, and DDR2 to be absolutely honest.

Also I wouldn't go for the hub I linked, just realized it was 3.5" not 5.25".

So unless the case you get has a external 3.5 bay, and don't mind waiting for it to ship from china. go for it.

Drat. That seemed like exactly what I wanted. Google! Anyway, here is the wish list items:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136533 (Hard Drive)

For the Power Supply and Processor I decided to take your advice and pay the extra few bucks so that it will last me longer in the future before I will have to upgrade again. Now what's your take on Windows 7?

*Edit @@TorqueEffect A quick Google Search and I found this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5-to-5-25-DRIVE-BAY-COMPUTER-CASE-ADAPTER-MOUNTING-BRACKET-USB-HUB-FLOPPY-/150793104037

also, for OS's I'd suggest Linux, but if you want windows, Windows 7 is the best one to get. make sure you get the 64-bit!

From what I've read around, not that many games support Linux, or require mods to get Linux.

Looks good to me too.

I suggest getting Windows 7 over Windows 8.

I hear of all kinds of compatibility problems with games bought off steam not working properly on Windows 8.

For once we agree on something.

I've been hearing that too, and from what I know, a lot of current game developers are sticking with Window 7 due to the easier set up and more people own 7 over 8.

Tomorrow I shall be meeting with a friend to determine if he can help me assemble it. Otherwise I will need to head off to my uncles to assist me. I know enough to swap out and clean computers, but I don't want to be messing around with a $1000 complex machine and have something snap on me!

Uh...I use Windows 8, and have had no such problems whatsoever. The core is essentially the same as Windows 7.

You *may* want Windows 7 if you prefer the more familiar, desktop-centric interface. But with Windows 8, it's normally not too difficult to keep out of the "Modern" interface.

I have quickly figured out, laptops are only good for internet and school use.

Gaming should be strictly for Desktops, UNLESS you go to LAN parties but who does that anymore?

Laptops have poorer performance, a Laptop i5 has almost half the performance of a Desktop i5. Most laptops have integrated graphics, but ones with dedicated graphics are far inferior to the desktop version.

Oh and laptops are more expensive.

Since laptops are usually taken everywhere they get broken easily.

Batteries become useless after about a year or two.

Also they are not upgradable beyond RAM and the HDD. Very rarely the CPU can be upgraded, but the CPUs are extremely expensive unless bought second hand.

I had a old T61p Laptop. Best, and only laptop I have ever had. It did have dedicated graphics, but it was a Quadro which isn't the best for gaming, but it could still play Fallout 3 with lowered settings. But it did have a overheating issue with the GPU, but that is Nvidia's fault, not Lenovo. Even had a 1920x1200 15.6" screen, and Thinkpads have the best keyboards of any laptop I have ever used.

Been thinking about getting a netbook, or a cheap laptop with my tax return.

Well. I wanted to get a Gaming laptop but my dad said it was too "Bulky" And I was like "Dad, it's suppose to be" But then he talked me into getting the MacBook that sucks at gaming but I won't be using it for gaming that much anyway :P

I am saving up for a new desktop but, the problem with desktops are, they're not portable and in my house, I barely have room in my bedroom to put it. Anyway, I'm saving up for one :P Any suggestions?  I might want an all-in-one, so I don't have to deal with buying monitors and other stuff like that

I know that I have a decent computer... however I want a better one! Currently, I have this:

System:

Microsoft Windows XP

Professional

Version 2002

Service Pack 3

Computer:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual

Core Processor 4200+

2.25 GHz, 3.00 GB of RAM

Physical Address Extension

I'm looking for something with Quad Core, 4+ GB of RAM, Desktop Computer. Basically, I need Processing Speed. I'd love the ability to play games/draw, and run Livestream. Any suggestions?

For Livestream I'd actually recommend more than 8 GB of RAM and a high-bandwidth internet connection.

In this day and age it's actually very hard to find a computer like the one you're looking for, mainly because this day and age even moderately low end computers have better specs than that. Unless of course you're looking into buying a used computer, which is a different matter entirely.

If you want to game, you're looking for a good GPU, that's the main thing that games require to run at decent speeds. I'd recommend getting a second GPU specifically for rendering the desktop if you want great performance, it's well worth the extra amount of cash.

all-in-ones are basically laptops, don't bother.

If you got a tv in your room with an HDMI input, just use that. Re-arrange your room if you have to.

All in ones have the same problems laptops do.

I just recently replaced my 24" Dell LCD with a 39" Insignia LED TV.

I always put away my MacBook in a computer bag but I don't put away my PC laptop, It takes up the middle of my desk. And I have a small stereo system that takes up the left. On the right I have all my school stuff. Yeah I need a new desk :P

I need a TV...possibly wall mounted. Yeah that would be better. Saves space. My room is really small
