Bronies are a religion?

That is hilarious, sad, and creepy all at once...

I don't know if I should be scared or laughing my arse right off...

But then again.. "Jediism"... so yeah.. I suppose if that can be, than so can't this one...

Wonder what their main prayer is.. I bet it involves whatever they had for "Golly".....

Feel free to add me on steam if you want to play something. Also don't be afraid to message and talk to me. I've had bad luck when I start a conversation, so I more then likely won't start one.

No way. A cult possibly, but a religion? No way. First of all a religion would have some being being worshiped, Vishnu in Hinduism, the Buddah in certain forms of Buddhism, Allah in Islam, and the worship of one's self in Atheism. (yes I consider Atheism to be a religion and the worship of one's self) Also there would have to be some kind of gain in the end.

The whole thing of him saying that "Love and Tolerate" is our catch phrase really wanted to make me throw up. I know I would be caught dead before I ever said that.

Jesus was supposed to have been teaching that for thousands of years, but no one seems to pay attention to that. It's mention on a show about colorful magic ponies, and suddenly EVERYONE notices it!

Jesus taught Biblical love and tolerance. Not this politically correct stuff.

You beat me to it; "love" and "tolerate" do not have quite the same respective meanings in Christianity as they do in our current society (I didn't say "modern" because that usually implies superiority, and I don't think that can be said of the current state of Western civilization). I'd be happy to explain, but I'd rather not derail the topic nor start an argument.

Technically, I guess it could be considered a religion for some.  The thing is, people get the definition of the word "religion" confused.  If you say that bronydom is your religion, then some people will get the idea that you worship the Great Horse Goddess or something silly like that or, like some people have said, that you're part of some kind of cult with weird horse-worshipping rituals.  or possibly even that you do drugs.

Here are some definitions of "religion" that I've copied and pasted from Dictionary.com:

1. a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe

As has already been said, bronies generally tend to believe strongly that the real world should be more like Equestria.  Therefore, it can be argued that we believe this is the "purpose of the universe."

2. a specific fundamental set of beliefs and practices generally agreed upon

     This one is pretty axiomatic.

3. the practice of religious beliefs; ritual observance of faith

This is the one that generally gets people feeling weird about it.  Many bronies do practice the beliefs learned from My Little Pony, and many of us do ritually observe this "faith."  Everywhere you go, you try to act in a kind and friendly manner, because you, as a brony, would like to identify yourself as a kind and friendly person.

I think it's the word "ritual" that freaks people out.  Dictionary.com defines "ritual" as "an established or prescribed procedure...," which I feel sums up what we do here pretty well.  We have established what is acceptable behavior for bronies.  We have our procedures for watching the show, for collecting our merchandise, for drawing our fanart or writing our fanfictions.

conclusion:  Religion is just a certain way you do things.  It doesn't really have to mean that you believe a thing is your supreme diety or something.  It just means you feel strongly about following the guidelines set by whatever that thing is.

Of course, I wouldn't consider bronydom my religion, just because I already have a religion (Catholicism), and I wouldn't want it to seem like I was putting ponies on equal terms with God.

You are a ghost, driving a meat-coated skeleton made out of stardust.

What have you got to be afraid of?

I'm sorry if I offend anyone who actually believes in this but bwahahha

That is ridiculous.

Being a brony is obviously not a religion. It's just enjoying a show and fan created content. Those who live with lots of ponies in their lives.. or how I should explain it doesn't do it cause they think it's what they are supposed to do or because they believe in anything, they do it for fun.

I don't know about other people, but I kind of find it a stretch to say that because people learn from the moral lessons in the show, we follow the teachings of the series like a religion.

I'm kinda worried, if a fandom who is made up of  teenagers and young adult don't know these moral lessons already, before watching the show...then we have more problems than this fandom being turned into a religion.

This reminds me about that one article about feminism and their hard-edged belief on the existence of a global patriarchy

Well... when you have men ruling over a country and deciding what is best for women without even asking a single woman, then yeah, it's a patriarchy :P A global patriarchy? Yes. Women do not have equality anywhere in the world, nor do they even have the rights to their own thoughts and feelings and well-being. XD It's a fact, man. Sorry, but it's true. Not trying to start a fight, by the way >__<!

But yeah. I am a feminist. I believe in the absolute equality of the sexes; men and women alike. Not even just men and women, but the transgendered and the sexless; every living human!  O:

While I do sometimes THINK ABOUT what the moral of a certain episode is, I don't have a "spiritual connection" with it. I mean seriously wtf

Yo! I'm Shenron00, but you can call me “Shen” if you want!

Thanks to WheatleyCore for the sig! BTW, yes, I do realize that's Carnage and not Shenron.

Dude... It's a cartoon about ponies... Religion includes not just beliefs, but rituals as well. We don't have rituals.

We watch the show every time is comes on.

Kidding!

Or am I?

Really though, it's more of a way of life than a religion. We're nice and friendly and stuff because we all truly believe that Friendship is MAGIC! ^^

In all seriousness, it really boils down to what you call "religion"

I heard a pretty good argument once that America's true religion is economy, and our real god is the Dollar Bill.

Sooo yeah. Ive even heard preachers on the pulpits compare peoples hobbys or interests as metaphorical "Idols."

It kinda depends on perspective I guess and level of obsession. I "religiously" watch the show whenever a new episode airs.

Also there is enough within the show to extrapolate a set of virtues, a pantheon, and thus form into a sort of religion. Just like Jediism. It has all the building blocks. 1000 years in the future who knows what brony may morph into, given the number of dark ages we might have and the flawed reinterperation of our media that will probably result in.

I read this article that kind of through me off... it's a blog post from the UK Telegraph talking about fandoms including the Brony fandom, in the context of them being a religion.  Apparently, being a Brony means you base your ethical decisions on the way of the pony.

I don't know about other people, but I kind of find it a stretch to say that because people learn from the moral lessons in the show, we follow the teachings of the series like a religion.  Certainly, I think the show does have good ethical lessons, but it kind of boggles my mind that they would go so far as to say that every person who identifies as a Brony follows the show as some sort of spiritual belief in its moral code as a way to live life.

Anyway, I thought I'd toss this article up for discussion on here and see what other people think... is this the new way of making fandoms look like a cult, a genuine misunderstanding of what a fandom is, or are there really a large number of people who treat the show as a religion?

Full article text is here: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/technology/jamiebartlett/100012300/bronies-whovians-and-snapewives-is-pop-culture-creating-genuine-online-religions/

Okay-

There is being a Brony, and then there is Bronyism. It gets wierd when your in the Bronyism zone. Someone should write this guy a letter. Yes, Most bronies try to love and tolerate as much as they can, which this article is correct about. but the "Religion" is false, there IS a religion, but very small. I can love and tolerate and follow the teachings of the show, but I'm not going to start praising celestia over god. nonononononononono.

Jediism is a little cool though, you should check it out, they believe in a all binding energy, but it pretty much is like Christianity though.

May the force be with you, always

I have very flexible views on religion. If you feel strongly about MLP and can derive some sort of practice from it, then bronyism can be your religion. Even if you don't follow it as a religion, there are aspects that can still be absorbed into your current practice. Anything can be a religion if you make it so.

I don't. "Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between two or more people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association." Wikipedia.

"Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language." Wikipedia again.
