What the older generation of fans think of us!

Twilight Mist

Recommended Posts

I recently joined mlp arena and asked what do they think of Bronies and the answer was...not good. They thought most of us enjoy clop fiction and bullying people who like the older gens. While I disagree on the first point, I do agree that most of us do look down on G1 fans. Why do we do this? After all our motto is to love and tolerate.

I personally don't care if someone likes the older generations. If they do, good for them. However, they're just not the same as G4. In my eyes G4 almost seems like an entirely different thing compared to the older generations. The fans are different too. However in the end we're all just My Little Pony fans, and I think we should get along.

I've seen and heard about what you're talking about.

While I'm not a big fan of the older gens myself, they can do whatever, bro. They like what they like.

Eh. Can't really blame them for feeling that way, but it's usually the douchey elitist Bronies who do that.

Ok... I'm really confused... You're referring to yourself as a fan of G4 again? Please make your mind up! Are you a fan or not?! I used to have some G2 toys when I was younger... It's a shame the older generation fans dislike bronies and generalise us but it's also not fair for the bronies to hate against fans of earlier gens... It's not a one way street...

Wait what! I don't think any less of the old gen fans and not all of us are cloppers, I think they are right in some ways because some of the people in the worst end of the spectrum do, do bad things like look down upon people who like older gens.

P.S If you are a clopper who is reading this then please know that I don't think any less of you :3

I never said that I would totally turn my back on FIM! If the fandom sorts itself out and gets rid of the deviants I will be more than happy to join the fandom again!

I'm not entirely sure why you seem to care so much about it. It's like asking fans of classic Star Trek/Battlestar Galactica/Doctor Who about the fans for the rebooted/re-imagined versions. Isn't it more important what the fans think of the alternative franchise, not that version's fanbase? Why is that important what fans think of *each other*?

It's like the fandom is somehow more important than the subject, and that's just strange to me. I don't care what others think about me, and I can't see why anyone would care about what I think about them. It's not like I have any authority or power of judgement over them, so....?

I care so much about it because I want to be able to tell people that I'm a Brony without them thinking I'm either weird or a perv!

Honestly, announcing you're a member of any fandom or fringe subculture, and there are going to be people who think you're weird or a perv. That's the nature of fandoms.

Walk into the middle of an anime convention and yell that you're a fan of country music, and they're going to think you're weird. Mainly because you're yelling about something out of context.

Fringe subcultures, like Bronies, Furries, Otaku, Trekkies, Whoovians, SCA, etc. all tend to attract those who are 'deviants' in one way or another because the subcultures have already deviated from the mainstream making it more acceptable to deviate even further. Go to any fandom's conventions and you'll find a subset of fetishists late at night roaming the hallways. It's inevitable. Some conventions even set up special events for that kind of thing in an effort to contain and direct those energies.

That and you'll also find a disproportionately large percentage of fandom members who suffer from physical, mental, or emotional issues who are far more open about those issues than they would be in a mainstream setting. Again, there's less pressure to conform as the group is build around nonconformist tendencies to begin with.

Because of that, associating with any fandom at all is going to get you labeled as weird, and probably as a perv.

I really don't care if a brony/pegasister/whatever.jpg watches. Last year I saw a lady with a G1 tattoo of a pony. I personally don't like anything other than G4, but like @@Mikami, said, we are all just MLP fans.

The two shows may have the same name attached to it but there's a reason why we say that we're fans of "Friendship is Magic" first or we should anyway. The two MLP shows are worlds and decades apart and thankfully have nothing to do with each other. And legitimate fans of the old shows are probably much older if they grew up watching it and have a more resentful attitude as a result. I don't dislike fans of the older shows, personally speaking. I have nothing to resent.

I don't see why they or anyone else would care about the clopping thing of course a lot of bronies are cloppers but even if it was true that all bronies were cloppers I don't see why so many people put up so much fuss about what people decide to jerk off to. There are way way stranger things people do their business to than cartoon ponies, trust me I have seen quite a bit of it. The point about bronies going out of their way to demonize the previous generations is a fair point, sure there are plenty of us that don't but the amount that do is a problem. I like G1 but not nearly as much as G4,

I think the love and tolerate cliche is all hogwash. If you are a nice person, you're a nice person. If you're a bad person, you're a bad person. It doesn't matter what kind of wall people hide around to fool people of their true nature.

Honestly, who cares if a group of people bad mouths us, they're just haters. Good for them I guess? It's stuff like that that makes me just laugh.

Also, Why the sudden interest in G4? I thought you liked G1.

I joined the Brony "fandom" because I fell in love with its ideals (love and tolerance), not because I like some TV show.

EDIT: For the record, I did enjoy MLP at that point, but if MLP's "objective qualities" were all it had then I would have stopped caring about it the day after I found out about it.

Keep in mind that I could call out the old gen for fans for bullying as well. Many of them have on coke-bottle Nostalgia Goggles and HATE G4 just because it changed what they were used to and re-tooled the show and toys so drastically.

I re-call one interview with a head of classic pony fair where she pretty much said she hates bronies and the new found fame of the brand due to "it's popular now it sucks" and didn't like that pony-collecting was no longer a borderline underground sub-culture like it was Pre-G4.

I've also seen quite a bit of a elitism and "screw you, this is our fandom we were here first" from pre-brony era fans.

I would personally love if all that would go away, because I've seen some G1 fans that seem like they'd be awesome people if they weren't so petty and spiteful towards us.

I couldn't give a less amount of fucks what they say, and to be perfectly honest they're hypocritical. I've heard many more cases of G1 fans hating on G4 then the other way around. Sure, many G4 fans prefer It over G1, but I rarely hear of one making fun of it. While I have heard of G1 fans looking at G4 fans like they're scum. Hell, most of them blame G4 fans for all of the hate bronies get.

Why should it matter exactly? The older generation fans should stick to their preferred magical horse show and G4 fans should stick to their own. There's really no point in either groups insulting one another, it's not going to benefit either group in the long run. I've seen G1 fans insulting G4 fans just as much as I've seen it the other way around. It's all pointless bickering. Nothing wrong with clopping either, what one wants to do in their own time is perfectly up to them and using it as an insult against the entire fandom is just childish.

I agree with this:

From my experience I see bronys making a real nuisance is on YouTube on older gen videos: it's obviously not all and I'm not saying it is,  but most of the bronys who comment troll the frig out of those videos and give us a bad reputation to the older gen fans.

I did a thread on it a while back, and it's really sad I think that bronys who do this trolling can't be more grown up about it

I don't know where that information/problem situation comes from but I haven't seen any.

Are there animosity within each group of fans, sure there is. Hell go to a Star Trek convention sometime. (You think Bronys are bad)

As one who is an old G1 fan (and still is in a more nostalgic way) each series has their own marrets in their own ways for the times they were in.

Oh really?

Well, maybe before you suggest that 'the answer was...not good', you should post a link to the thread you started on the arena so everyone can actually form their opinion on what was written instead of just choosing to imply everyone has the same opinion.

http://mlparena.com/index.php/topic,349416.0.html

Just like this forum, members on the arena forum have varying views on all subjects. Not everyone is going to say the same thing, agree or be rainbows and sunshine. But I think any reasonable person reading that thread will see that a majority of the people don't really have any more issue with Bronies than Bronies have with Bronies.

You are the one who brought bronies up and what arena members think of bronies. To color everyone on the arena's opinion by a few negative opinions is just like saying all Bronies are exactly the same.

To be fair you should have at least posted a link, it's totally unfair to color everyone with one brush and then don't give any context to what you are talking about. Bronies don't like it and long time MLP fans don't like it either.
