Hi guys! Well, I thought I'd do some shameless self-promotion here and get you guys' opinions of mah new song... It's not the most interesting or engaging, perhaps, but still. tongue.png It was probably inspired by Aquatic Ambience from Donkey Kong Country somehow, but don't let that make you think it'll be near as good. xD

So yeah, here it is... Underwater Mountaintops...

So what's your opinion on both this song and chill-out music in general?

Whoa, dunno how you think that's just okay. It's really soothing, and not overly repetitive like some ambiance-styled music. Really talented! :0

I have to agree - this is very soothing and pleasant to listen to.  It's difficult to find anything to suggest for improvements - it's a very nice piece on its own, and I don't really think it needs anything.

I found myself thinking you could extend the ambient strings and an even simpler form of the percussion to transition slowly to a different theme (either as part of the same song or a totally different one).  I don't know if you're familiar with Digitally Imported (an online radio station that, at least as of around 5-6 years ago, specialized in various forms of electronica), but this is totally the kind of thing they would play in their Ambient section.

(Hey, do you suppose I could have you listen to a couple of mine? :))

Thanks! :) Yeah, it would be more interesting if it had more than one "key" in it, I guess. I tend to not spend a ton of time on my songs due to me only having the trial version of FL Studio and the fear of it crashing and losing everything (this song probably took like 3 or 4 hours), and that ends up not giving me enough time to think of stuff to add. I think I just need to spend more time on my music to saturate it with all my ideas. :P

And yeah, I'd love to hear some of your work! :D

I actually don't think it needs to be any more "interesting" - there is a place for simplicity in the music world.  Simple doesn't mean dumb or repetitive - it can also be elegant.  I really like what you've done with this one - my only desire is that it could be longer, and evolve over time into other similarly elegant themes.

If FL Studio crashes so much, I would recommend looking at a different program.  I used to use Acid Music all the time, and I believe it's still around.  It's based on multi-track looping, but it works well with one-shot instruments and live-recording as well.  Very well organized.  Alternatively, Reason Studio is also a great program, oriented more around MIDI sequence development.  It has you set up a virtual audio rack, and among other cool things, you literally plug modules into each other with virtual cables as though you were hooking up a physical audio rack.  It's a pretty neat concept. :)

As for my stuff: I have a few posts in this forum - currently, "Snow Mixed With Rain", "The Spacefarer", and "Panic Attack (NES)". :)

Eh, it doesn't crash all that often unless I leave it unattended for awhile. I really like FL Studio, and I feel like I know it pretty well. If I had the full version, I could stop worrying about crashes... :P So yeah, I don't really want or need to switch programs, but thanks for the suggestions!

I listened to those three songs, so here's my opinions:

Snow Mixed With Rain: WOW that was cool! :D Really cool and driving beat with an interesting melody to boot! Only thing I would recommend is to add a bassline to the background so that there aren't any tone-less parts where it's just drums. The beat is really cool, but I'd like it better with some bass in there. :D

The Spacefarer: This one started off really epic and profound (is that the right word? I dunno...). I really love me some epic chords. :3 There's lots of different sections of the song, which I really like! I love key changes, beat changes, timing changes... All that stuff! (speaking of which, there's a song called "Music With Different Parts" that does that a lot as well. It's really cool. :3) So yeah, I really enjoyed this one as well. And, this is more of an opinion, but I really like it when songs kinda end abruptly (not like unexpectedly, but the sound cuts straight off at the end), so it'd be cool to hear this song with a more abrupt ending.

Panic Attack: Even though it is just a remix, I know it takes quite some skill to work with FamiTracker (at least it was difficult for me ;_;), as well as transcribing music in general, especially fast-paced music such as this. I love 8-bit music, as well. :D

All in all, those were some really cool songs. I kinda prefer more different/melodic music, but that doesn't change the fact that these are some really well-made songs.

@MatrixChicken: Thanks! :)  I shouldn't talk too much about my work in your thread, tho - if you want to discuss those songs in those threads, I'd be happy to. :)

And keep up the good work yourself.
