PROLOGUE

The blizzard was brutal and bit at Celestia's body through her fur as though it weren't even there. She winced slightly, but didn't falter as she progressed. She knew something was up here, and she wouldn't like it. The air just felt wrong, and the closer she got to the top of the mountain, the more the sense of things just being incorrect got worse. Celestia narrowed her eyes as she approached the top of the mountain.

Then she hesitated. She heard something, and it made no sense to hear it. It was the crying of a baby foal. Celestia quickened her pace until she came to the top of the mountain, where she stopped, eyes widening and mouth falling agape. There was no joke, no cruel prank, and no falsehoods to be found atop this mountain. Only a foal, barely able to be considered an infant. It lay on the ground, half buried in snow, kicking and screaming.

Celestia slowly approached, carefully feeling with her magic along the air. No traps, no cloak spells and the incorrect feeling was slowly dissipating. She looked back down at the foal. Now that she was closer, she was able to make out the details. It had a crimson coat, and a dark purple mane and tail that were barely even there. It's eyes opened, each of which were pitch black. There was a sadness in it's eyes, along with fear, loneliness, and the slightest hint of curiosity.

“Oh dear...” Celestia muttered as she knelt down, brushing the snow off of the baby. It continued to cry, though it was getting weaker and quieter. Celestia felt a pang of concern, and quickly but gently scooped up the foal into her forelegs and gave a mighty flap of her wings, taking them high into the air. The foal continued to cry in her forelegs as she swerved in the air and began to make the trip back towards Canterlot.

“Sister, did you find it?” Luna asked urgently as Celestia entered into the throne room. Celestia didn't immediately respond, but instead glanced down to the now sleeping colt under her right foreleg. Luna tilted her head at Celestias silence and trotted up to her. “Sister, what's wrong?”

“Look...” Celestia replied quietly, holding the foal out a bit more from her chest. Luna halted, eyes widening.

“Sister... where did you-”

“This is who I found in the mountains where we felt it. I can already tell you; this colt was the source.” Celestia said, looking up at Luna, who was silent for several moments.

“What do you think we should do with it?” Luna asked tentatively, coming closer. Celestia sighed.

“I'm not sure, Luna. I couldn't just leave him alone up there. He was already almost frozen when I found him. But, given where he likely comes from...” She said, slowly starting to make her way for her bedroom. Luna followed close in tow.

“Do we know what he's capable of? Has he shown any signs of danger?” Luna asked seriously, glancing down to the foal with a skeptical gaze.

“No. As far as I can tell, he's just a normal unicorn colt. I can't help but wonder why he was up there though...” Celestia muttered the last part, glancing down once more at the colt. Luna looked ahead and the two fell into silence.

When they finally reached Celestias room, the colt was starting to stir. Celestia gently set him down on her bed, and looked back over at Luna. The two were silent for several moments.

“We can't let him go on his own, can we?” Luna asked.

“It would be too big of a risk. If my theory is correct, he'll be just like the energy that makes him up if we don't find some way to keep it in check. We can't let that happen.” Celestia said, watching as the baby started to cry once more.

“We could try to find a way to balance the energy...” Luna suggested, causing Celestia to smile slightly.

“We could try. But you do realize this will be a big commitment for us, right?” Celestia said, looking back at Luna with a curious gaze.

“We already rule Equestria. I don't see this being very difficult.” Luna said, and Celestia chuckled.

“You would be surprised, sister.” Celestia said, a smile forming slowly on her face. She glanced down at the colt. “Now.. what to name you?”

“We could try to name him after the energy that made him.” Luna said, sitting down by the bed at the same time as Celestia.

“No. A direct link would be too obvious... He can't find out about his origins. It's as simple as that.”

“So what do we call him, then?” Luna asked, looking curiously at Celestia. A few silent seconds passed, before Celestia smiled.

“I got it.” She slowly leaned down and gave the colt a pet along his short mane. “Happy birthday, little one. From now on, your name shall be...”

“Entropy!” Celestia called as she trotted down the corridor of the private rooms section of the castle. “Entropy, I need to talk to you!” her tone was loud, but not harsh. She rounded a corner, and spotted Entropy galloping toward her. He had grown quite nicely in the six years since Celestia had found him. Entropy came to a stop in front of her, and then hugged her foreleg. Celestia giggled happily as he glanced up at her, happy face beaming.

“Yes, mom?” Entropy asked excitedly, practically vibrating.

“Your awfully excited today.” Celestia said in an amused tone of voice. Entropy nodded rapidly.

“I heard you and aunt Luna talking about it earlier. I get to go to Ponyville tomorrow, don't I!” Entropy spewed out rapidly. Celestia nodded.

“Yes. It's for your schooling. There are certain things that you need to know, that I'm afraid will be difficult for me to teach you in a timely manner.”

“Who will I be staying with?” Entropy asked, falling into stride next to Celestia as they started walking.

“You'll be staying with my former student, Twilight Sparkle. She and her friends will be your teachers for the next two weeks.” Celestia replied, smiling down at him and the bounce in his step.

“ooh, I heard about her! Didn't she restore aunt Luna from Nightmare Moon?” Entropy asked, striding a little ahead.

“That's right, Entropy. Now, come with me. We need to do your balancing.” Entropy's happy demeanor suddenly fell, replaced with reluctance.

“Do we have to, mom? I feel fine.” he said, slowing his pace and losing the bounce in his step.

“Yes, Entropy. You may feel fine now, but if we don't do your balance every so often, you'll stop feeling fine.” Celestia said softly, urging Entropy into an empty room to the side. It was dark, only lit by a few candles.

“Why do we have to do the balancing anyway?” Entropy asked, sitting down in the center of the room.

“You have a condition, Entropy. It is constantly going to be trying to knock your magic out of balance. We have to do this to make sure you maintain a healthy pool of magic.” Celestia said gently, her horn starting to glow. Entropy recognized the associated sound, and winced as he felt his inner pool of magic starting to be effected. “Hold still.” Celestia said. Entropy's breath started to come in short gasps as his body heated up to painful levels. He yelped as the last pain hit, and he collapsed. It was always painful to balance his magic out. But he figured that, as long as he was fine afterwords, it was okay.

Celestia knelt down and lifted him up into a gentle hug, rocking back and forth. Entropys breathing slowed back down to normal again, and Celestia gently planted a kiss atop his forehead.
