Stephen Colbert has been named the new host of "The Late Show."

 

CBS announced today that the current host of "The Colbert Report" will take over for David Letterman when he retires next year.

 

Colbert told ABC News that he will ditch his current alter ego for his new role. "I won't be doing the new show in character, so we'll all get to find out how much of him was me," he said. "I'm looking forward to it."

"Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television," said Leslie Moonves, the network's president and CEO. "David Letterman’s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today’s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night."

 

The 49-year-old Emmy-winning Colbert said that just being a guest of Letterman's was "a highlight of my career."

 

"I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave's lead," he said. "I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

That's pretty cool. Stephen is a great comedian, but his faux-Bill O'Reilly shtick got pretty old for me. It would be awesome to see him branch out.

Well that's a good fit to replace him. Not sure how having Colbert not in character will be.....will be sad for Letterman to leave but glad its happening with as many shakeups as there has been in the late night world. Kimmel for the win tho.

If he sticks to his comedic quality, then this should be good. But I get the feeling his is going to stop alot of his more controversial humor, and focus on more cbs family crowd pleasing antics.

Letterman had a great run.

 

I love Stephen Colbert.

I dont get why he wont be in character, there really is no point in hiring him for a 5 year contract and say "You know that thing you're famous for? DON"T do that."

I'm rather disappointed since he won't be in character. Having him just do interviews, news, all that junk won't be that great. What he has going now is such a good thing, would hate to lose that.

I think it's best that Stephen keeps his satire angle. It works great for him, even better when people take his character seriously. I think he would do a great job replacing Letterman though.

Wow, I figured Craig Ferguson would replace Letterman when he retired.  I was honestly looking forward to it.

 

I like Colbert though, so seeing him be himself hosting a show will be interesting.

 

Lets just hope Colbert doesn't pull a Leno on us XD
