movies/tv Best romance in anime history

What do you think the best romance in anime history is. I think it is the romance between Chibiusa and Helios. I mean, Chibiusa's light was what allowed Helios to escape his imprisoned body as Pegasus, and he has visited her dreams every night, and they even had a date in the dream realm. Helios would do anything to protect his precious one, even if he had to put himself at great risk. Like when Queen Nehilenia was about to take Chibiusa's golden mirror, Pegasus jumped into her mirror to try to protect her. There's also the scene where Pegasus is tied up, and the Amazoness Quartet is trying to ride him or take his horn. He creates a bunch of fire and starts getting burned by it, but Chibiusa runs right through the fire and starts freeing him, even though she's undoubtedly getting severe burns (she was wearing nothing but a sailor fuku and boots). When the Amazoness Quartet asks why she risked her life, she said "He would've done the same for me". And when Queen Nehilenia cast the curse of eternal sleep on Chibiusa, Helios used the last of his power to reawaken Chibiusa.

This should come as no to surprise to anyone who has ever seen a post by me about anime, but I'll say the best romance is Utena and Anthy's from Revolutionary Girl Utena.

However my interpretation of "best" may be considered odd. Because I'm not saying its the best because it's the most heart-warming, or sincere, or tear-jerking, or any of that mushy stuff. I say its the best because I have yet to find one more interesting and complex. However, there are certainly some mushy stuff that goes along with it. But, really, that's just icing on the cake for me.

I'd hate to spoil any bit of it though.

I never really followed anime romances tbh, I guess the only one I can think of is Bulma and Vegeta, the fact that Bulma was able to deal with someone as ruthless as Vegeta(and change him to, though that was mostly Trunks) is actually quite amazing to think about

Outlaw Star.

Gene Starwind and Melfina.

When Gene had the opportunity to possess LITERALLY anything conceivable by the mind of man, he turned his back on that in order to be with Melfina.

Sato and Misaki's "romance" in Welcome to the NHK. They're both crazy, and have a very uneasy relationship. You feel bad for them, due to the situations they're in. This was a very 'different" kind of couple. However, they're one of those couples where you can't help but get a smile on your face when you see them being happy together.

Gonna be honest and straight up... I've been a Sailor Moon fan since its release date and I never once looked at Helios and Chibiusa as a couple. It was more so a guardianship and companionship rather than romance. Those are my thoughts tho...

As of recently and this can always change depending on the story line's strength to draw me in...

Asuna and Kirito are sitting on this pedestal for now.

To me, Naruto and Hinata's unbeknownst romance was something that my heart really did melt to. It was really heartwarming.

Ehhm, how is that a romance, let alone a good one?

I don't recall him ever showing any particular affection for her.

He might not have shown affection for her, but they do have something special.

Again, how do you get that; she literally died to protect him and not only does he never mention it, he is still hitting on Sakura, with Hinata standing fifty feet away.

I really thought they would have a relationship, but sadly Naruto didn't notice.

Anime romances are very difficult to judge. A lot of them follow typical romantic comedy stuff where a guy likes a girl who doesn't care about him or vice versa but there's always a third wheel who tries to get in the way or steal the person away and whatnot and it never turns out very well for the others. Sometimes you'll get something like a romance that comes out of nowhere because plot device which...isn't inherently bad but can really mess with the pace of the story.

Some of my favorites are:

Keiichi and Belldandy - Ah My Goddess

In spite of some of the whacky hijinx that ensues because Keiichi, while quite level-headed, still plays out some romcom stereotypes their relationship ultimately stayed calm and collected. Even at the beginning of the anime they were doing boring stuff like having dinner, saving money and never doubting each other even in rough times. No crazy situations like walking in on Keiichi getting hit on by someone else and Belldandy freaking out because she totally trusts him and whatnot. It's a very organic relationship and it's one of the reasons I love the Ah My Goddess anime.

---

Hakuoro and Elulu - Utewarerumono

img-2551799-2-utawarerumono_2.jpg

Much like with Belldandy and Keiichi this relationship is very humble and almost never runs into typical anime romance situations where they start to doubt each other. What makes this particular romance interesting is that they never once have to say how they feel as it's heavily implied throughout the series and only in the final episode do they get intimate enough for something as simple as a kiss. It never feels forced even if it's right at the end of the series. You can feel their love for each other and though much of it feels more like a family relationship more than lovers it feel much more natural. They don't need wild and crazy to show that they care, even when Hakuoro has many women interested in him because of his status as emporer. Hakuoro has a very level head and almost never freaks out. This is a source of comfort for Elulu. Elulu herself can sometimes take the part of your typical anime woman in love it's never super crazy. Another example of romance that doesn't have to rely on stating the obvious or cheap and generic situations like bad fanservice to convey it's importance. You can see that they respect and trust each other wholeheartedly.

Have you ever watched "Oh My Goddess: The Movie" It was so very good!

I'll add another couple from...

Cardcaptor Sakura

Sakura Kinomoto and Syaoran Li. Theirs is a very sweet but low key romance that builds very slowly over the whole series and both movies.

Please, ignore the English dub "Cardcaptors". I pretend that abomination doesn't exist!

I have seen it but it was only once and like...ten or more years ago. I seriously need to rewatch it cuz the only thing I remember about it is the fight with Nidhogg.
