Final fantasy 13 is one of the only final fantasy in the ps3/x360 generation

(Including sequels)

Final fantasy 12 in on the ps2 generation is falling against 10.

And many people in this generation have ps3/x360. How could it compete 13?

I never played any of them past 12 and likely won't. They don't really make those games like they used to. Final Fantasy 12 was a good game but I was unable to finish it due to exaggerated difficulty. The only one I didn't finish actually out of all the numerical series. At least 12 has an exceptional soundtrack which I still listen to and enjoy.

I put my vote in FF13. It is not the best but it has better sales than 12.

How do sales make it better than FF12?

FFIX didn't sell as well as the other PS1 FF games yet it's arguably one of the best games in the series, let alone among the PS1 games

Companies earn more money on games that sell a lot.

And final fantasy 9 didn't earn well because it has low interest in the Public, and many good games are competing against it.

But i am not saying it is a bad game

I can't vote. I haven't finished either, and thoroughly enjoyed what I have played of each. I have little disdain towards Final Fantasy games, and am usually pretty happy with all of their installments('cept FFX).

FFXII's Gambit system was pretty neato and I liked the bazaar but it's world felt somewhat lacking compared to XIII. Bland environments that were open as opposed to beautiful and varied environments that were linear...I'd take the latter any day. Both the characters and story in XIII are among the best in the series. Both gameplay systems are a mix of automation and control over the setups. XII being a slower-paced game and XIII being a much faster pace. The music is also vastly better in the XIII series. XII is simply orchestrated Final Fantasy. Nothing special in my eyes as I've never been a fan of the FF series' music for the most part. XIII and XIII-2's music was more unique. Soothing ballads, grooving raps and synthetic metal...they really went all out on the music in these games.

After XIII-2 (and likely Lightning Returns but I've not played that yet) and Revenant Wings I'd have to give it to the XIII series. XIII-2 improved just about everything in XIII including the linearity issue. Revenant Wings was generally about the same as XII but from a different perspective though less control over abilities as everything was simplified (in a good way, though).

So XIII wins for me, with or without the inclusion of the sequels of either series I find it to have better everything except maybe the Gambit system which is awesome. The Paradigm system would have been better if it was more balanced. Except for the beginning of the game where you have little to no abilities and only the base class sub-abilities (such as Sentinel's ability to raise the defense of the whole party) the game doesn't encourage much use of all parts of the system, though doing so will still make the game go much faster. Ever heard of people who can "mash X to win through the game with just Commandos"? I bet you I can beat the game faster playing the game properly. ;)

tl;dr FFXIII > FFXII.

To be honest, I liked XII and hated it at the same time. I detested the gameplay, not even the gambits could appease me. I hated how everyone could do everything and the characters were little more than just a different model as far as battles went. I'm not a fan of how the quickenings and summons worked either. I was interested enough in the story to actually finish the game, but it just wasn't that great to me (and it always kind of bugged me that Vaan just kind of sticks around simply to be there past a certain point).

To keep things short, I like the, gameplay, characters, story, music and world of Final Fantasy XIII more than Final Fantasy XII.
