Your Reaction: FiM moves to Boomerang
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in Sugarcube Corner
Boomerang is getting a major overhaul early next year. It's going to be like The Hub was when it started out, a family co-viewing network with both old AND new content. Its going to have original programming for the first time, and is going to be a second flagship next to Cartoon Network. Hell, the international versions of Boomerang have already been airing premeire programming for years.- 26 replies

The more I think about Pinkie Pie, the more I can't help but think that she's a spiritual successor to Season 1-3 SpongeBob. Think about it, alot of the antics the oldschool Sponge did are what you'd expect Pinkie to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0VGonczZ8s They both also love work, friends, and have a passion for cooking. They're both happy and optamistic children at heart, and while not stupid, have a certain naivité that can make the missguided. So what do you think?

Let's be honest, is FiM a preschool show?
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
Much like how the 9-14 tween demographic essentially represents a crossover appeal with older children and younger teens, the 2-11 demo represents cross-over appeal between preschoolers and elementary school-age children. Barney is strictly 2-5, FiM is 2-11. Besides, these are official demographics used by television network for Neilson ratings reports -
Could an episode about addiction work?
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
-
I actually have an idea for an episode premise involving the concept of addiction. Basically, its a Fluttershy episode similar to Putting Your Hoof Down, only instead of Fluttershy learning to be Assertive, its about her gaining a gambling problem. Simply put, The CMC are playing a new trading card game when Rainbow and Fluttershy come along. Scootaloo asks Rainbow if she wants to play, but Dash prefers more physical based competition. Fluttershy is then asked to play, hesitant at first, she decides to try it. Fluttershy manages to beat Scootaloo, making Rainbow question how she did it. Fluttershy simply says its just basic logic, and probablility calculations. Scootaloo suggests that Fluttershy competes in the tournament league for the game. Confident in her newfound knowledge of the game, Fluttershy accepts. The rest of the episode is basically Fluttershy showing a darker, more personal side. The game makes her increasingly selfish, cruel, disrespectful, and borderline sadistic towards her challengers. To the point where she eventually begins to con Spike and Discord to buy her more cards after Rainbow and Rarity decide to restrict her. Towards the end of the episode, Fluttershy becomes a twitchy, card-obsessed, psycho who calls herself Fluttercard: The Game Master. After almost losing to a game, Rainbow reveals that the tournament Fluttershy's been competeing in was just a shaddy hoax. The shopkeeper who arranged the tournament actually paid some of the players to purposley loose just boost the TCG sales. Fluttershy returns to normal and forfits the tournament. And the lesson is, competition can be fun, but not when it takes over your life and costs you your friends. Addiction is a somewhat serious issue, but as long as it isn't about drugs, I still think it could work. As for why I choose Fluttershy, Well she's the most likely of the mane 6 to be good at a trading card game. Rainbow prefers using her strength for competition than her brain. Applejack knows when enough is enough, Twilight lacks the ability to adapt to when things don't go her way, Rarity would probably be against tournament play, and Pinkie would probably get bored after 2 rounds. Plus, Outside of her being shy and cowardly, we hardly know Fluttershy on a personal level compared to most of the other mane 6. When she's not trying to get over social anxiety for the umpteenth time, most of her episodes are about caring for others. So an episode about addiction could show us how naive Fluttershy could possibly be.

movies/tv To our fellow Canadians (About YTV and Teletoon)

To those in the great red leaf country, How have the 2 major kids networks there, YTV and Teletoon progressed over the years in your opinion? Have they gotten better, gone downhill, or stayed the same? -
movies/tv Voicebox Productions needs more anime work
TheMisterManGuy posted a topic in Media Discussion
For those unaware, Voicebox Productions, Inc. is the voice recording studio Hasbro and DHX use for Friendship is Magic. The company is based in Vancouver, the same location as The Ocean Group. Which brings me to the topic at hand, Voicebox needs to do more anime dubbing. The only things they dubbed were the Transformers anime, but they need to do more. Since Ocean really doesn't do any Anime work these days, Voicebox needs to pick up the slack. Companies like Viz, Aniplex, NIS, and even Sentai Filmworks to an extent could use them, and besides, its about time Vancouver makes a comeback in the Anime dubbing buisness. -
Your Reaction: FiM moves to Boomerang
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in Sugarcube Corner
I suspect Hasbro will hold on to part of the channel after the shows all ran their course, at which point, they'll sell their remaining interest back to Discovery. Seasame Workshop did the same with Noggin. Shortly after it introduced The N, SW sold whatever stakes they had left in the channel back to Nickelodeon.- 26 replies

TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
2-11 is more accurate TBH. By 12 years old, Neilson and Television in general considers you an adolescent/tween/teen. But yes, FiM is just a show that, while targets a specific audience, doesn't pander, and it encourages periphery demographics. And this goes back to what I said earlier, the show is most likely going to be aging up from 2-11, to 6-14, which may allow it to tell darker, slightly more mature stories, while still keeping younger children happy. -
Let's be honest, is FiM a preschool show?
TheMisterManGuy posted a topic in MLP:FiM Canon Discussion
There's been some debate as to how much can FiM exactly get away with. People then say, the target audience is very young. To witch I say, how young exactly? I'm starting to think some people believe FiM is a preschool show. The answer IMO, is no. While it was intended to skew a broad audience, Faust said she intended it to be for girls in general, not just 2-5 year olds, more like 2-11 year olds. However, I will say this. The show is most likely growing with its audience, the 2-11 year old girls who watched the show almost 4 years ago, are now probably 6-14 years old, part of that age range has already grew out of the original target audience. So if the writers want those older girls to tune in, as well as keep the younger kids happy, then they're going to have to tweak the show's scale and structure a bit. And if the Season 4 finalle and Season 5 preview are anything to go by, then we may see just that. So do you consider FiM a preschool show? -

I've come up with a 2nd possible theory as to why Fluttershy is so shy and has these random outbursts of anger and rage. Though bear with me, this may get convoluted and would most likely have to be simplified for the show. What if the reason Fluttershy's backstory & parents are rarely explained is because Fluttershy actually doesn't remember her true past. What if her father was a hardcore war leader and Flutershy, or her actual name, Slash Wing was forced to volunteer. Thus strenghening her to be a brave, tough, and badass war pegasus. But after some sort of slip up, her father decided to disown her. So he had a spell casted that had Slash Wing's memory resetted almost completely, gave her a new identity and personality, and banished her from Cloudsdale to Ponyvile. All the memories of the life Fluttershy thought she had on cloudsdale were actually faked from the spell. The reason she's so shy and cowardly is because that was the new personality programed by the spell. And the reason she has these freakish displays for rage and/or courage is because her past training still remains in her psyche. To this day, Fluttershy remains unaware of her true past. Now I understand there may be some plot holes in this headcannon. Like how did she come to know Rainbow then, or how did she ACTUALLY get her cutie mark. But this is just a rough idea for now, If I come up with a way to fill in these holes, I'll update the post. But what do you think so far?

movies/tv Why is children's advertising nothing but toy commercials these days?
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in Media Discussion
No actually, while toys were a big thing advertised, there weren't 6 damn toy commercials back to back. There were candy commercials, video game commercials, Food commercials, and for the older kids, clothing, music and movie commercials. Now turn on Nick or CN at any given time and you'll see 5-6 toy commercials in a row. There are still cereal ads, but not nearly as many as there used to be. And with the exception of Betty Crocker and Go Gurt, it seems all the candy and snack products like Cheetos and Pop Tarts are targeting 12 to 22 year olds now.- 18 replies

movies/tv Why is children's advertising nothing but toy commercials these days?
TheMisterManGuy posted a topic in Media Discussion
I've been flipping through Cartoon Network and Nick lately and I noticed that outside the occasional Happy Meal or cereal/fruit snack/Go Gurt ad, and Xfinity or car commercial for the parents. Nearly every single product advertised was for a damn toy. I know toy commercials have been a part of kids' advertising for years, but watching old Nick and CN commercial breaks, they were far from the only things advertised. I remember you could advertise Skittles on Nickelodeon, I remember Snickers commercials airing on Cartoon Network. And various other things like games, treats, music, and clothes were advertised on kids networks. And sine kids networks targeted kids up to 14, that ment a few products that appeal to teens like Soda were advertised. And not everything was dumbed down for kids either, McDonald's used to market full menu items like the Big Mac to kids as young as 8. You don't even see Pepsi or coke ads on Nick or CN anymore. What I'm trying to say is, what happened? Why are Cheetos and Kool Aid commercials airing on MTV now? Why is candy now something that can only be marketed to 12-34 year olds? Cereal commercials are now largely extinct, and except for the odd Nintendo commercial, there's hardly any video game commercials on kids networks anymore. Its like advertisers think 2-11 year olds only want toys.- 18 replies

movies/tv Should Sailor Moon get a second chance on US TV?
TheMisterManGuy replied to TheMisterManGuy's topic in Media Discussion
Plus, Yu Gi Oh, Digimon, and a few toyetic shows are all ready airing on Nicktoons, so the channel obviously has experience with anime. But this also brings up the same problem with Adult Swim. Nicktoons caters to a primarily male audience, not only that, but its target demographic is boys roughly 7-10 years old, an audience who largely hasn't hit puberty yet, so the "short skirts" and "dem legs" cards can be thrown out the window. Toonami had an excuse in 1998, its target audience was 9-14 year olds, puberty hitting tweens. But, now the only real place Moon can go is Disney, one of the few networks who for better or worse, takes the 9-14 market seriously these days.
