  1. Yes, true. A pretty well-known fact. I just kind of marvel at the fact that, from spending years of watching TV, some formulas become so ingrained in you that you don't even realize you're recognizing a formula in a show. Might not be the most marveling thing to think about, but it makes you wonder what formulas have been ingrained in your head. I'm trying to think what formula I have seen before that helped me recognize what the ending would be. I got that Thorax and Ember would become friends from the very beginning of the show; it was only in the middle, when Thorax tried asking for Spike's advice, that I realized that Thorax would get advice from Ember. I can't think of a plot, in another show, that was really similar to this episode. Usually, the ones I think I can kind of recall involve the two characters getting mad at the main character for not better communicating their time schedule, or the main character is involved in poorly planned two-timing and gets caught by both people involved in the end. I guess I was able to come to the conclusion with Thorax getting advice from Ember, based on how much time the show had left to resolve the issue, as well as it seeming to be the easiest route to take and not feel forced.
  2. It was a nice plot! I find it kind of funny where as soon as Thorax was explaining his leadership problem to Spike, and Spike was too busy trying to find the friendship problem, I thought, "Oh, I know where this is leading! Spike is trying to keep Ember and Thorax apart, but little does he know that the leaders will get along and Ember will even help Thorax with his leadership problem." And soon enough, yep, Ember and Thorax were helping each other on their problems towards the end. Kinda funny how you can predict the ending of a lot of stories...
  3. I liked the episode! But I couldn't help feeling sorry for Rarity with all the ponies hating on her. Poor Rarity! It's okay, you're my favorite pony! And I'd definitely have my pony persona fangirling over her, if I could.
  4. I think the problem is that you were first introduced, and became very used to, the style of the G4 ponies that all previous generation ponies look weird to you because they used the formulated, old style. As a girl growing up with G1 ponies, no, I did not find them scary or horrifying growing up. It's the style I grew up watching and I did not see them weird or horrifying growing up because there was no other style used to make them seem weird. In fact, even with the new G4 style around now, which I do think are cute, I still think the G1 dolls are actually a lot more visually appealing than the G4 dolls. Edit: Whoa! This topic is old! I didn't realize it was bumped up and I'm replying to an ancient post, haha.
  5. Well, one thing I could tell, if you're trying to make it kid-friendly, while keeping the adult and dark themes you're usually use to writing, the potion seems to give a heavy implication for LSD (addiction to potions and enhanced imagination while drinking it). Perhaps that's what you're going for, but I feel like it might not be hidden enough to keep soccer moms from barking off their chain. Unless you made the episode have the ponies overreact and try to tell Shooting Star how awful being addicted to a potion is, maybe. That's my thought on that. But you, perhaps, don't care so much on that being well-hidden since this is a fanfic and you wouldn't be releasing this for children. The story sounds interesting and does sound plausible for a pony plot. I have to say, Shooting Star kind of reminds me of my pony, Story Tail. Story Tail is a pony that has a lot of stories that she shares with little fillies and animals, but she never writes them down or shares with adults as she has fears of people stealing her work. She'd have some lesson on learning not to be afraid to put her work out there.
  6. I can tell you a little bit from my experience with trying to have no emotions and being apathetic, as a teen, when my parents use to yell at me a lot. I successfully repressed any feeling of wanting to cry or fear when they yelled at my face. I no longer felt any fear or the need to cry, I just waited for them to be done with their yelling. I still gave a slight reaction, however, of backing off and giving them a weird face when they would lunge at me, trying to get a reaction from me, giving them slight satisfaction. They intensified their yelling and screaming cuz they were worried something was wrong with me and wanted to see me cry again. Eventually, I did break down and cry when they did a double team of yelling and scolding me for something I did, much to their relief. So, yes, it is possible to repress your emotions and feel nothing. I could have probably continued training to feel nothing when my parents yelled at me, but I decided it wasn't worth it in the end. They would have just gotten increasingly worried and they might have taken me to therapy, to sort it out, if I kept it up. I can tell you that even if you were to successfully feel nothing and repress your emotions, there would be psychological consequences in the long run. I'm actually a person that's not that good at expressing her emotions; expressing that I'm angry is not something that I'm good at cuz I don't want to start fights or have long talks about it (that feel more like fights to see it from my side). I'm hesitant to express to someone that they upset me in general and it can take me a while to express it. I usually end up brushing it off, repressing, and dismissing it, which backfires me later. I also tend to bottle up my worries until I can no longer contain it and it spills over into some mental health disaster. If I don't express my feelings in some way, my feelings of anger and being upset with someone turns into resentment, or even worse thoughts that they're some kind of emotional bully, when the reality is that I haven't expressed my feelings to them for them to re-assess their behavior. My worries, as I said, spill over into mental health issues; I experience horrible, intrusive thought OCD and those thoughts eventually lead me to depression and not being able to function properly. You shouldn't express your emotions in a destructive way that it would hurt and anger everyone, but you shouldn't repress them and brush them off either. The key is to have good emotional intelligence; you should be aware of your feelings, acknowledge them, express them in a way that's not harmful, and then let go of them. Instead of letting your feelings control you and hurting someone with it, you express it through ways like writing it down, using art, and talking it out with someone. If you're angry or upset with someone, you need to talk it out because writing or using art won't usually be enough in that case. For me, using writing and art can help with worries, but I still need to talk it out with someone sometimes so I know I'm not all alone with these feelings. I feel that with Vulcans, because they supposedly feel stronger emotions than humans, they would have greater psychological problems. Not only for their stronger emotions but also because they go to great lengths to suppress their emotions. I bet Vulcans would absolutely drive our psychologists mad because they would refuse to acknowledge any psychological issues they have from suppressing their emotions.
  7. Well, I've been around this fandom since I was a little girl, watching gen 2, so I know the whole deal with making a whole new generation. But I was thinking, because of how well this series turned out, maybe they'll want to play safe and stick to the same universe but with different ponies?
  8. I was thinking, if Hasbro decided the Mane Six have been done to death and want to make a new cast of mane (main) character, how do you think they'd go about it? Who would be the new mane characters? I was thinking of several possibilities: 1. The Cutie Mark Crusaders wouldn't make a bad mane cast. Watching their more recent episodes, they wouldn't make a bad plot of helping other ponies discover themselves. 2. They introduce a whole new cast in the same pony universe. Perhaps, they'll include a Flurry Heart all grown up so we can see how she turns out when she's older. 3. They'll make a completely different pony universe, which could be both rewarding and highly risky.
  9. I couldn't resist and I regret nothing!!! *Runs away* *Comes back* Good thoughts though! UK would probably, totally do something like that to Equestria. *hides* Edit: This turned out bigger than I expected. Trying to make it shorter!
  10. I didn't even mention whether your first position was entry-level or not though. Typically, you'd assume that and entry-level people are still given leniency and are mentored; I'm pretty sure this new writer was treated as an entry-level person and was highly watched over and mentored. They didn't just leave him alone so he could write some poor, pony, fanfic smut that other fans are fond of doing. If all entry-level positions were treated like a brick wall, we wouldn't get genius writers.
  11. This! So much this! J. K. Rowling didn't have any novels previously published when she wrote Harry Potter. Imagine if we applied the logic you guys are using on this new writer and you'll find it quite sad! "But you don't have any other novels previously published, Ms. Rowling! This novel is gonna suck!" Or imagine getting your first job and we applied that logic; all your co-workers treat you like trash and complain. "Why didn't our boss hire someone with more experience? Our company is going downhill now!"
  12. Am I the only one that was kind of expecting Rarity to realize she can sew and make Pinkie a rock pouch for her sister? I don't know why I was fully expecting that, but I guess that would have been too easy of a solution for the plot. Though, I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere on Rarity making a rock pouch for Pinkie to gift to Maud. I just know it! But anyway, maybe Rarity didn't forget she can sew! maybe she was trying to keep silent on that fact so Pinkie is less likely to bring up that idea. Maybe Rarity is allergic to making rock pouches!!
  13. I think Rarity and I would generally get along, but we'd treat the marriage more like a contract of friendship rather than love. I think there would be some discomfort and awkwardness between us because she has her preference for pony princes while I like human males, lol. I'm quite happy with my boyfriend, lol!
  14. Well, I think Twilight would not be phased, considering her trip to the human world. I feel most ponyfolk would find humans to just be odd creatures they didn't know about, considering they live in a world of mythical creatures. For humans, however, I think they would not take it well. They came from the human world from MLP, if not our world, where magic and talking animals don't exist for them, so it might be too much of a cultural/reality shock. They would probably think they drank some funny water.
  15. Now, this is a bit of a musing of mine and a slight head-canon, but I've been thinking of Big Mac's gender identity and masculinity. Having watched Brotherhooves Social a second time, I've thought about how Hasbro made previous jokes on such a manly stallion having some hidden feminine qualities. The furthest I can recall was in "Lesson Zero", where the creators make a joke that Big Mac was genuinely in love with Twilight Sparkle's doll, Smarty Pants, even after the love spell cast on the doll was removed. After the love spell chaos ended, you could see him snatch the doll away after looking to see nobody was around and neigh with joy before running off with it. The next time I recall a joke played on Mac's masculinity is in "Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep?" He transforms into a magical girl-esque, princess-like alicorn. This, I think, was mostly influenced by the MLP community's joke of a Princess Big Mac, especially by one particular comic I know, and Hasbro just decided to make it canon. Nevertheless, I think this ended up contributing to his identity, even as a joke. And then finally, there's the "Botherhooves Social", where Big Mac comes up with the brilliant idea to be able to participate in the Sisterhooves Social by disguising himself as Apple Blossom's female cousin, Orchard Blossom. Now, you could say that he was just trying to put on a good and convincing show so others don't suspect him to be male, but I like to think it was a bit deeper than that. From viewing the episode, it didn't feel Big Mac was just acting, it felt like he was thoroughly enjoying being female a bit too much. To me, Orchard Blossom wasn't just a character, but more of an alter ego that he's wanted to project. And now that he was disguised as female, thanks to his "brilliant" plan, he took full advantage of this just seeming to be a plan with no ulterior motives to fully act female without being judged. I wouldn't say that Big Mac is transsexual, but I feel like, with how Hasbro presented him, he's just a bit gender fluid and wishes to be female sometimes, or he's a drag queen. At the very least, he's a masculine guy that's also very in touch with his feminine side. Anyway, that's just a bit of a musing. Feel free to contribute some of your thoughts on this! I do enjoy this humor with Big Mac, but I can't help but see it as also part of his character. Now, all I have left to say is that I hope to see more Orchard Blossom, lol! Edit: Shoot! I accidentally posted in the wrong forum, but hopefully it'll get moved! Is this the right section?
  16. How about Gutsy Gumhooves? Gumhooves a sort of play on gumshoes, lol. It'd mean she's brave and a sort of goodie-two-shoe?
  17. It seems that the link to your image got broken. Could you try reposting it? You can upload it directly from your computer through attachments.
  18. On the circle around the cheek, I believe that's suppose to be her cheekbone, lol. Her style is to make her horses a bit muscular and prominant bone structures; kinda like a real horse.
  19. Very nice! You did an amazing job with her horn! Is this your first time working with digital art? I know it can be tricky and frustrating, and makes you wish you could just draw it all out by hand. Gimp and Photoshop are a pain for me, even if I do know all the tools. If I could make a suggestion, you could make her mouth more closed, making it look more snake-like with her tongue slithering between her teeth. Right now, it looks like she's kinda panting, lol. But that's just me!... Maybe I'm giving a bad suggestion... Sorry!
  20. Very cute! She kinda reminds me of chocolate mint ice cream with the colors! xD Have you decided on her cutie mark?
  21. Cinnamon cake, huh? Lol, dang it! xD I just want a gold pony!!
  22. Yeah, I use to be a manga artist. ;( I was very frustrated with how I drew my characters. Unfortunately, I don't think I have much time to draw now. I'm focused on video games, college, and just doing well in life. But ponies in the FiM style is pretty easy for me to do.... I just suck at choosing their color schemes, lol!
  23. lol, well I do follow the basic MLP style cuz it's so easy to do! Even though I was an artist when I was younger, I've constantly got frustrated with how I drew and didn't really develop my skills. Was kinda lazy and too much of a perfectionist, lol. I'd get so frustrated that I'd just give up and not continue my drawing, lol, cuz I wanted it to be perfect and didn't want my image ruined. I got frustrated not getting the character to look like how I imagined, but managed to finish this somehow, lol.
  24. Thanks! xD Worked hard on her! I'll try doing her alicorn version next.
  25. Luckily, there's a lot of online tutorials for using Gimp! You should try them out! http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/ http://www.gimpusers.com/tutorials.php http://www.gimpology.com/ I'd link some project tutorials but all the ones I've learned from are from Photoshop.
