@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp was speechless. What was this magic? Somehow they were broadsiding themselves, all the while trying to fend off an army of the undead? In all reality, Sharp would have preferred to be on the ground. "Take us towards the forest, full ahead! We might lose them in the confusion!" He shouted to the Helmspony. They faced enemis on all sides, and there was little they could do but try and smash their way out. It was suddenly hot, he could feel himself sweating. He saw the demon alicorn fly towards Lavender, and knew he had to do something, anything. He snatched a loaded musket from one of the marines and leveled it on the navy-blue shape. It was a difficult shot for a musket, but he fired anyway. Anything he could do to distract the beast. He felt some of the burning powder from the pan settle on his muzzle, a couple more powder scars. They were unavoidable. He tossed the musket back to the marine and drew the heavy sword. this was no weapon for fine fencing, but a weapon that beat the enemy to death as much as it cut them. He roared at the limit of his voice, his face a mask of glee and madness, ensouled by the spirit of battle. "Alright, let's show these buggers how the Equestrians fight! Fire! For Captain Chaser, and for the King!" -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp buckled the sword to his belt, nodded in thanks to the sergeant, and turned to the two sailors. He pointed at one of the mutants blocking their path. "Reckon you can fly faster than one of those? Because if Miss Lavender doesn't get rid of them, we'll need a distraction to get past them. You lead them on a little dance, then loop back and meet up with us over the Everfree." He paused, appalled at what he was about to say. "I won't order you to go. You have to volunteer. And I'll be honest- It'll be damned bloody bad. You won't be able to take anything that will slow you down. When you make it back, and you will, the drinks'll be on me." He walked to the rail, and looked out over the dark horizon towards the capital. How would his guards fare without him, should their efforts fail? Would they get out of the city, or fight to the last to defend their homes? Sharp hoped he would see them again, before all this was done. "If you can't find the ship, head to Canterlot. They'll need all the help they can get. Look for the Canterlot Royal Musketeers, tell 'em Captain Sharp sent you. They'll make you welcome." he turned his gaze back to Lavender, watching her progress. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp considered their options. The return to Canterlot would no doubt also be fraught with danger, but the immediate threat of two giant hostile pegasi made him think. There was no way to get past them, unless... He hated himself for even thinking of it. But it might work. Gods be damned, he hated it. But what choice did they have? Lose perhaps their one chance to fix this all for good? "Sergeant," he spoke to Lightwing, "I need your two fastest fliers. And open the magazine, give everypony at least one firelock. Two, if you have them spare. Everypony, then issue a dozen rounds each. If they can fire a gun, they're to be given one. If there aren't enough guns, issue boarding pikes, cutlasses. When we have to make a stand, I'd prefer everypony have a chance of defending themselves." He paused, realizing he was unarmed. "And bring me a sword, if you'd be so kind. I'd prefer a straight blade with a bit of weight to it, if you have such a thing. Thank you." -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp sighed as his hooves clattered down on the airship's deck. "never have I been so glad to get on a bloody airship," He said to himself. But this was no time to stand around. They were surrounded by the enemy, battered and bloodied, and though he rarely fled in the face of danger, Sharp decided that a tactical retreat was their best option. Beyond that, running with their tails between their legs didn't seem too bad either. he paced about the deck, looking for the captain, ignoring the dull throb coming from his foreleg. He stopped a sailor. "Where's the captain, lad? We'd best be gone before those buggers reform, and charge again." -
Happy Empire Day, everyone! What? Just because we stopped celebrating it in 1958 doesn't mean I'm not allowed to.

@@Once In A Blue Moon, @@Orion Caelum, Sharp tried in vain to shift the dead weight. Quite literally dead, in this regard. Perhaps if he had the use of both his hooves he might be able to hold it long enough for Wilhelm to move, but that was out of the question. Instead, he braced himself and bit down on the largest splinter. He wrenched it out with a spray of blood, and felt as though he had been struck with a hot iron. The pain was near unbearable, but he forced himself to tear the right sleeve off his jacket, and bind it tight about the wound. A shame, he had purchased this uniform only two weeks ago. Unable to shift the carcass on his own, he looked for the others. "Anypony dead? I shall need some help over here! Mister Wilhelm has decided to trap himself, you see?" He smiled at the poor jest. A thought occurred to him. If the Scion was fending off an assault, there was little chance the marines would be able to retrieve the party unmolested until the enemy were repulsed. Nonetheless, he pulled the signal flaregun out of his saddlebag and fired it out of the gaping hole in the ceiling. He watched the bright flame rise, hoping beyond hope that they could be rescued. Their situation was nothing if not desperate. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, @@Orion Caelum, Sharp reeled from the second, larger explosion. Now that he thought about it, setting off an explosion in a room containing what were effectively highly unstable magical bombs wasn't the best idea. he tried to put pressure on his right foreleg, but by the gods, it hurt. He could feel wood grating against bone. Nevertheless, he slowly limped towards the body of the mutant Wilhelm had killed, which had been flung into one of the other cubicles, leaving his carbine forgotten where he took cover. He saw the pony lying senseless on the ground, and attempted to get to him by pulling the corpse aside with his good foreleg. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp cursed violently as the chair toppled over. Once the crystal was out of its container, he snatched up his carbine. Forgoing the strap that would normally keep the stock tight against his shoulder, he unsteadily reared onto his hind hooves, grasping the carbine in his forehooves. he had seen the technique performed with some degree of success on the parade ground in Canterlot, but had only idly practiced it if he had nothing better to do, and such a method of firing a flintlock had never been used in battle to his knowledge. But it would allow him to switch targets rapidly and move faster, even if he was probably less accurate. But, accuracy with a smoothbore weapon was rather wishful thinking; especially with two rounds loaded. The musket ball was a mad thing- only the bayonet, or the sword, or the spear, knew what it was about. He would not be able to maintain the stance, a few minutes at most, and while he was all for a good scrap, he had no intention of staying. "Well if you're all done bloody gawking," He snapped at the others, "we'd best get on with whatever this is supposed to do. I doubt those things outside will be there for long. They'll be in here, tearing our damned guts out." He kicked himself for getting angry, again. That Tarot nonsense had given him bad luck, and it was entirely his own fault, so he'd just have to grin and bear it. No sense taking it out on others. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp looked up at the roof, watching as dust drifted to the floor. He silently sifted through his saddlebags and retrieved a paper cartridge. He bit the bullet and spat it down the barrel, then reprimed his carbine and tapped the butt on the ground to drive the loose ball down the barrel. The second bullet would add a bigger kick should one of those beasts come at them. He dropped the rest of the powder, and made his way cautiously towards the back of the room, beside the model ponies. He spoke quietly, as to not attract any unwanted attention. "If you have what you want, then let's get out of here. Seems we've lingered too long." -
gaming Battlefield 1 VS Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
nolongerabout replied to 1Bit's topic in Media Discussion
Funnily enough, I have a feeling people are a bit fed up with space. Actually, no, that's not right. What's wrong with making a game that looks exactly like the last three you released? I don't see the problem. By all accounts Adva- Mod- No, Infinite warfare will be a new and refreshing addition to the greatest FPS series of all time. Anyone who thinks differently must be some sort of battlefield tryhard. I mean, what are the Battlefield developers thinking!? Doing something different? Crazy. And they've gone the wrong way, the silly beggars can't count! They haven't even made a futuristic battlefield game yet, how can something be successful if it looks to boring old history for inspiration? Where are the drones, the lasers, the spaceships? They haven't even done giant robots! Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit, but it's damned useful for getting a point across, sometimes. If you want to see what I really think, check the other thread on Battlefield 1. I can't be arsed to say it again here. -
gaming Well it's out! Battlefield 1 (trailer)
nolongerabout replied to Mentis Soliloquy's topic in Media Discussion
Having played Verdun, a multiplayer FPS in the same setting (I would recommend it if you enjoy bolt action rifles, mad charges into machine gun fire and getting shot from a million miles away and thinking "Who the fuck did that?") I eagerly await this game. too bad it's EA, so all we can really know for sure is that it'll be released early with little testing, have 60% of its content locked behind a paywall and absolutely no bug fixes for about two years. However, in a genre flooded with pointless sci-fi shooters with terrible writing and indistinguishable mechanics (I'm looking at you, Call of Duty), this may be the redefining game. Most shooters take place World War Two onwards, so when it was announced that this game was to be set in the Great War I was pleasantly surprised. Who knows, maybe we'll get that Napoleonic Battlefield game I've been praying for next. It will be nice to see how they handle the melee weapons common in the trenches, too. Nothing was more satisfying than bayoneting an enemy player on COD World at War, so hopefully that'll be replicated here with trench clubs and swords. Very nice to see a FPS that isn't "MURICA, FUCK YEAH", too. Or at least, in the trailer it didn't seem too focused on the side that fought even less than the Russians. But I've been wrong before. Even if it looks bad, I'll probably buy it to see what it's like. Battlefield games have always been good (Mostly, *Cough* Hardline *Cough*), but their downfall is always early releases and expensive DLC. Still, can't wait to charge kraut trenches with a Lee Enfield sword bayonet listening to the Grenadier's March. Good times, sounds like.- 24 replies

Would very much enjoy the phrase "Be Prepared" And a scouting Fleur-De-Lis above my left breast, where it's supposed to be worn. I reckon that's the sort of tattoo I could put up with when I'm sixty. Would get it now, but I don't have the money. Soon, though, soon.

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp looked at the wide variety of tools in the small smithy, but none were quite to his liking. He wanted something larger, like a sledge, a tool that could break through walls if needs be. He would make do with what he had, and if the others had recovered a red keycard from the manager's office, then any tools would be of little use anyway. Beyond beating somepony to death with them, of course. Nonetheless, Sharp busied himself looking for anything that could relate to what caused the facility to be abandoned in the first place among the researcher's work stations. He had little idea what he was looking for, and doubted he'd understand it even if he found anything, but there must have been something salvageable in the mess, even the slightest clue. This place must have had gossip of some sort, he thought. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp wandered in carefully, saw the mannequins, the crash mat, the forge, and realized this was a far larger operation than he originally thought. Such a combination of objects, in his opinion, could only be used for one thing- weapons and armour testing. he had seen a similar room in Canterlot, albeit without most of the magical apparatus. There, they had built fine armour for the gentry, testing it by placing it on life size models and firing all manner of weapons at it. Sharp suspected there had been a similar setup here, but where were the researcher's projects? For such a large lab, there was little evidence of anything physical. Perhaps it had been evacuated with the staff? That seemed to make sense. Sharp spoke curtly to bramble. "You can look after that axe for a while. You might need it for these other doors." In the meantime, Sharp wandered over to the small forge. A heavy forging hammer would do well to replace the axe he had lent out. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp, after watching the attempts on the door, decided to lend a hoof. Pipe still in mouth, he picked up his gun and walked over to the stumped ponies. He looked at the door, saw it was only wood, and pulled his axe from his belt. He offered Bramble the haft. "You might do a bit better, mate, with that. I shall use this," Sharp pointed at the brass plate on his carbine's butt, "And the gods better help that bloody door.". He lifted the frizzen, and blew the loose powder out of the pan. That way, it wouldn't go off if the flint sparked on the frizzen. He would batter the door, and working together they would probably make much better progress. -

@@Once In A Blue Moon, Sharp walked cautiously into the room, keeping his eyes on the so-called 'Tamed' mutants that had attached themselves to that bizarre pony leading the way. But, seeing no threat, he decided here would be a good place for a five minute break. He lent his carbine against the wall by the door to the overseer's office, and pulled a small clay pipe from his jacket. He caused a spark with his magic and sipped on the pipe until the tobacco within the bowl was glowing, and sat down by his gun. Sometimes he found it best to sit back and look at what was going on. Rushing about just led to mistakes. "Where to now, eh? Both doors may lead to what we're looking for." He said to no one in particular. Aye, and the more time we spend looking the less time we have, he thought, before we are wiped off the face of Equestria by that damn weapon. -
@@Once In A Blue Moon, I thought that it was rather ingenious foreshadowing of whatever is coming. Rather than a general RP where most things are laid out clear, i.e. 'This is the bad guy, go beat him', here the lines are far more blurred. Enough information is given, from my point of view, to maintain intrigue as to what will happen, while not giving too much away. Keeps an air of mystery about it all. And I don't really mind that Sharp doesn't have that much to do. This bit seems much more tailored towards the magic/science people (Or ponies, I suppose), which isn't exactly Sharp's forte. But that's fine. He'll just hang about, shoot at anything that's not friendly, and swear at everything. That seems reasonable. EDIT: Also, those MS paint diagrams are very helpful; very helpful indeed. Thank you for going through the effort of making them.

@@Orion Caelum, Sharp watched the beast tumble from the sky, no longer holding any ideas that the bow this pony carried was for show. It may have accuracy and range, but for power and versatility, Sharp would prefer a musket. There was a reason why most modern equestrian forces no longer used bows. Nonetheless, it was a creditable display. He certainly couldn't have done it. There had been some commotion in the foyer, and Sharp reckoned it was probably best that the group stood together. He spoke to Wilhelm again. "Best we find out what's happening in there," gesturing back to the others, "Unless you have any way of opening Twilight's Lab. He was not angry at Wilhelm, but at himself for wandering so brazenly through what he considered enemy territory, without a care. Distracted by the displays, but he should never have allowed himself to be. He moved away from the decidedly unstable area, and into the cover of one of the displays. He drew his carbine, but the weapon was only accurate to about thirty yards or so, so he cocked it but didn't fire. "If it didn't hear the floor collapsing, I'm Celestia's bloody nursemaid.
