  1. I'm laughing my head off just trying to picture Fluttershy saying something like "What the hell, Twilight?"
  2. I'm a converting vegan. That means I steadily converting my taste palate. That's actually what people normally need to do if they were not raised vegan - instead of try (and fail) to change in one night or week. I'm eating less meat and consuming less animal products. My breakfasts are all already full vegan. I'm doing it for pretty much every reason out there: better for animal living conditions, better for the environment, better for my personal health, better for my wallet, and also kind of necessary for future human survival. Try making a homemade milkshake with frozen banana blended up in place of ice cream. It's pretty rad. Home grown food is the best. It's obviously some work but I think it's worth it. It cheaper in the long run and you always get everything fresh with no contamination you didn't personally cause.
  3. Hey fridge! I just bought these half-melted ice cream sandwiches. Quick! Cast Frostbite Level 5!
  4. Hey there, Kyo! Love that avatar and sig~! Yeah, there is kind of a problem here. Does one keep at one thing until they get good at it or do many things until they find something they are good at? Personally, I believe everyone (majority based on commonly shared biological characteristics) is equally capable of all skills. Aptitude is based on early childhood teaching and environmental factors. So neither approach is necessarily wrong. I suggest people try many different things to find what interests them most and then focus on that regardless if they are initially good or not. There are several things I really enjoy that I was not good at initially but got good over time because of practice.
  5. Exactly. He was missing the sunglasses. It would have worked otherwise. It would be interesting indeed. I'd like to see him get into some kind of epic dragon magic. Maybe. I wouldn't have any issue with that. It sounds kind of like what the CMC do. Well it's certainly justified. Fear of failure exists to different degrees in everyone's life. In fact, you might say that it's what prevents people from addressing issues and making changes to the very things that shape their lives - from diet to exercise to simple discussion. Learning to face fear and cope with failure are two of the most important things to learn in life, in my opinion.
  6. I guess it's unrelatable in the sense that you and I prefer action on issues whereas some other people don't match their concerns to what their actually doing. I can relate to you on that, however. Ironic. Personally, I don't talk about serious issues too often because I prefer to address them with what I'm actually doing about them IRL. I suppose that may be a problem though because it might give a lot of people the impression that the issues either don't exist or that nobody they know is doing anything about it.
  7. As some have stated before, this is the normal situation in the US. Most of us are in this spot because of politico-economic factors. I suspected this episode would generate discussion on this topic because we look to see how the episodes and characters might apply to our own lives (or at least those of us that are discussing it now). But there is a disconnect between what was in the episode and modern reality. Most people these days can't live on their own not because of laziness or aversion to work but rather because, quite simply, no jobs are available in the first place or the jobs that do exist do not pay enough for one to pay their own rent. I have friends IRL that work regular jobs, put in long hours, and can't move out regardless. So there's a whole discussion right there on economics and politics that likely belongs in some other thread. I think the take-away for this episode then should be that people should do the best they can even if it doesn't mean they can move out. Be respectful of the people you stay with, share chores, and do what work you can. If you can't find work, try making it. Always do your best. Zephyr's problem was not just that he was running because of fear, but that he treated others poorly along the way. We're better off looking out for each other than just ourselves.
  8. Thank you for that. I laughed good. I'm half-and-half on Twilight. On one hoof, she deserved some kind of good position because the amount of work she put into her skills was insane - and still is! She'll always be our smarty lovable egghead. On the other hoof, she also got her position because she wound up politically connected to Celestia. I don't criticize her too much for it because she honestly is good enough for her position even if she didn't have any connections. Starlight poses a problem with this though. She seems to have as much magic potential as Twilight but does not have Twilight's position because...lack of friendship basically. Her apprenticeship status to Twilight has more to do with her social skills than her magical ones. You can't say Starlight hasn't refined her talents the way Twilight has given the spells she has already exhibited.
  9. I know you're awaiting a reply from Sealand, but I'd like to put in my own thoughts. Oh the joys of open discussion. I partially agree and disagree with religion being a part of these things. I say that because religion was tied into it but did not exactly drive the Crusades and ISIS. In these cases, religion was used as it normally is - as a smokescreen to justify other motives. Both of the Crusades and ISIS came into being (the Crusades as a movement and ISIS as a political entity) due to economic motives. ISIS did not come into being merely because of Islam - though it is strongly supported by that doctrine. It came into being because harsh foreign military action in the region forced people to defend themselves and, in the absence of a strong national identity, the people flocked to a religious identity to unify. The Crusades were more or less a power grab. So religion was involved but it was more of an excuse. You could of course argue that if the religion didn't exist at all then the Crusades and ISIS would not have existed as they did and that would certainly be true. But in the absence of some kind of humanitarian culture, I think they still would have manifested with different names.
  10. Good point about Rainbow. Her napping habit goes all the way back to Applebucking Season. Even if she did a hard half day of work, she did know that her friends needed help with the apples. So...yeah. There's room for argument there. On another note, this episode brings something else to the discussion. What about employment in Equestria? We have little to no information of how the mane6 got into their positions or even if they have jobs at all. So that could be a very big double standard. We can of course get into discussing how Twilight might have been a paid librarian or Pinkie might have worked for the Cakes and, yes, Rarity obviously runs her own business. But what about how they got to that point and how what they do is "enough to support themselves." I'm sure all of this is kept vague in the show because of the target audience, but that's never kept us from digging in before!
  11. Spike was raised by Twilight. What do you expect? I'd agree. People will do irrational things when fear is involved. It's actually quite logical when you get down to the psychology of it. People will do things that are really bad or harmful to themselves or others so long as they perceive those things to be better alternatives to whatever it is they fear. The reality of what they fear is not important - the perception of it is.
  12. Firstly, yes, I'm an atheist. Count me. *raises hoof* While it's not necessarily true that lack of religion might have prevented these things, I do agree there is a good chance they wouldn't have come into being. The thing about religion is that it is fundamentally sectarian or partisan. It's divisive because it downplays what we humans have in common and emphasizes things that "set us apart." So, while you can't directly blame say Christianity (whichever flavor that may be) for WW2, you'd have every right to point to it as part of what made up the strong German nationalist identity that drove the idea of perceived superiority. In other words, part of general Christian doctrine is that they are "set apart" and "holy." In practice that just feeds a superiority complex and generates distrust and dislike of those who are not "set apart" or "holy." I'm assuming because I'm in a thread with other atheists that I do not have to address the age old debunked argument of "but atheists believe the same thing." So you very well could propose that if most people were atheist for the last several hundred years then we might have had humanist cultures develop that would have prevented the economic and political situations leading to these travesties. I know atheism doesn't mean humanism or humanitarianism but it tends to develop in that direction anyways because it means we focus on making life better for all humans rather than one specific sect or tribe. It is possible for an atheist to believe in self over others but I do not believe such a person would be honest with themselves about what we've learned through science.
  13. I get what you mean, but it's really important for you to define for yourself what success means. For example, I'm partly an environmentalist and being successful involves not being consumerist in a way that harms and deteriorates the environment. That's quite different than the get-everything-I-can mentality that usually defines "success" in our culture. I cannot define it for you because you being successful has to do with how well you accomplish your goals according to your morals. That's not to say I won't encourage others to be...you know...more environmentally conscious though.
  14. So, my initial thoughts on the episode. Good! I liked it but more because of Fluttershy than anything else. Dashie had some funny moments. I couldn't really like the brother, though. I'm sure there will be some interesting discussion on him. I'm greedy. I want them to give us Midna. Oh dear. That's terrible (but I mean that in the sense that I hope she faces her fear not that she is a bad person). I know very well what it's like to be afraid of failure because I was a perfectionist all through college. I suppose the difference for me was that I knew that I had to face that fear and do the best I could so I could learn and improve. Coincidentally, I wound up kicking flank and getting summa cum laude.
  15. It was pretty epic, wasn't it? It's great practical advice. I've already found some useless things I do that waste time (and are not related to fun).
  16. Oooh?! They are your favs? Well, they're super excited to have a fan. View on Derpibooru - Original source Don't I know it. When a problem needs fixing, it's super hard for me to put it out of my mind until it's resolved.
  17. I'd agree that we've been getting a lot of Rarity relative to other characters. I mean, an episode doesn't have to focus mainly on one character for their season presence to rise. I think the relative lack of Fluttershy has merely accented how prominent Rarity has been. We're only 10 episodes in to this season, though, so it will be easy to flip around.
  18. I seem to like the spa ponies the more we see em. Also, those accents. You might be good at surviving Jurassic Park then.
  19. I wish I could have that more often. So rare for me. My favorite might be pineapple cream pie. Light and fluffy with a great tropical taste.
  20. I never thought I'd be a fan of cucumber. Then Rarity went gushing about cucumber sandwiches and I finally was like hey might as well see if I love or hate it. And then... True love! Cucumber is also great in fresh salad with bell pepper. View on Derpibooru (Original source unknown at time of posting)
  21. Oh. My. Celestia.... If Pinkie clone is real then she has every right to proceed unbothered. Personally, I'm hoping it's a changeling and we're gearing up for a return of Chrysalis.
  22. True that. We need more pairings like this. No, I don't mean shipping. Sweep on, everybrony~!
  23. If only we can get an episode with those two as mains. This would be a great opportunity since they've done parallel episodes before. Note: if anypony knows they're already doing this then don't tell me.
  24. I disagree. He wasn't "shady." He was in the basement. ... With the lights off. I totally loved this too! There have been some JJJ references before but I love every one. Maybe that's because I love JK Simmons. He was also the voice behind Cave Johnson in Portal 2, which is probably why they had such similar humorous tones.
  25. Pinkie has her backups set to automatic every other month. In her defense, it is kinda hard to find where to change those settings.
