If I prefer G1 over FiM, am I a 'true' Brony?

Do you need US to become yourself a brony? Are you afraid? Are you insecure?

If you can't consider yourself a brony, neither can we. So, if you want to be a brony, just feel yourself part of this frequency. And you will become a brony by doing so.

You become what you believe, what you love, sometimes what you fear the most. Everything is up to you.

Many of the mayor religion systems have been originated because of this reason. To control human mind and sentient belief, since they're both amazingly powerful. If you fear you're sick, you usually get sick. It works the other way around too.

In my mind, the only criteria for being a brony is liking some aspect of MLP (and wanting to be called a brony). If that means G1, then so be it. I hear it's pretty good, anyway. It doesn't matter if somebody doesn't consider you a "true" brony. Nobody can tell you what you are but you.

As others have said, calling yourself a "true" anything implies elitism, or to put it in layman's terms, that you're a better fan of something than others. I don't think fandom is really something that should be subject to gradation. Sure, you could make the argument that fans of FiM are primarily those who have hopped on a relatively recent bandwagon, and there's more to the franchise's history to appreciate. However, everyone here loves MLP in some way, shape or form, so let's not forget that key fact. I think the term Brony refers primarily to fans of FiM, but the definition is just an adult fan of MLP, so as a G1 fan you still fit that description. After watching most of the G1 series myself(I've seen the first two specials, the movie and the first 34 episodes), I'm going to say I'm a fan of that series too, though I still prefer FiM.

When people describe the awfulness of G3 it makes me WANT to watch it lol.  I saw, like, five seconds of what passed for Rainbow Dash in G3...  Oh my dear pony gods.

From what I've seen, the badness of G3 does intrigue me. I'm planning on watching through all the past MLP series in order, so I'll get there at some point. There's also that Princess Promenade trailer I saw that looks like it's related to another series entirely, but the animation and design looks even worse than this G3 series.

It doesn't matter if you watch G1, 2, 3, or 3.5 you are still a brony no matter what. No one can tell you other wise. But I still prefer FIM.

You are a brony even if you prefer an older iteration of the show. Heck, even I like G1! FIM is still my favorite though.
