SHETLAND PONY THREAD

This thread is dedicated to the cute and intelligent Shetland Pony, a hardy little race of stubborn horses from the island of Shetland, north of Scotland.

These stocky little horses may have also contributed to the creation of the MLP franchise, starting from its original, "My Pretty Ponies". Do you notice any similarities between this doll, and the real horses from Shetland?

What are your thoughts, and comments, on this breed of horse?

I can totally see how G1 ran off of this. I could also see how knockoffs came from this as well.

Now, what do you think of the Shetland Pony, in general?

Yup I can see they differences, but thats probably why Hasbro changed it up cause it was too off I guess for them and to attract little girls, so they changed the colors and eventually added things like a horn or wings.

 

As for the actual Shetland pony itself, if I ever wanted a real pony or horse, I wouldn't start with those. They aren't exactly the cuddly type, and not so good with kids. It always depends on the pony of course, they don't always behave the way the breed depicts them as. But I used to volunteer on a farm once and... Ok i'll tell this story.

 

Story

 

So when I was a teen I volunteered on this farm. I show up in the early morning and I always pass a fenced area holding a herd of shetland ponies. There's one temp holding fence on the side of the pony fence, that held a mini Jack donkey. This donkey was the sweetest little stallion I ever seen, loved people and scritters. I went up to pet him, when I quickly noticed his ear was torn up... Once again... the stallion of the ponies had attacked him while he was in his holding pen.

Now I know stallions protect their mares and this donkey is a stud, but still...he couldn't get away from the pony if he wanted to. Not to mention the stallion actually took a go at me when I got to close to his opponant. I was never able to pet those shetlands, they always attempted to bite. Frustrating.

Giving the choice between the ponies and the donkey I went with the donkey everytime.

I don't know a lot about horses and ponies really (I know, I'm a bad fan), but I loved Shetland ponies as a kid! They were one of my favorite animals. 

 

I don't know why I loved them so much.. I just loved their look, and they seemed like they'd be so nice and happy.
