technology Can I just install a modem myself without Comcast?

It's more complicated than the title. Essentially I called Comcast and they told me that I will not be charged monthly for having an extra modem/router upstairs in my room. I am getting 8mbps with a wifi card and that is atrocious! I am not computer savy, but can any networking experts explain to me, if the modem in the basement is connected to all coaxial in the house? So I can just buy the gear and plug everything in myself.

I am going to sound like a 10 year old here. But my dad is being rude and unfair about letting me paying for the modem in my room. He even refuses to get our current modem replaced, even tough he's loaded.

So are all the coaxial ports connected to the modem in the basement?

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're having issues with slow connection speeds because of the distance between your room and the router?

You might want to try a range extender.  It's like a second router which you would put somewhere closer to your room but within range of the main router, and it piggy backs the internet signal to create a stronger signal.  That way you wouldn't have to worry about the costs of installing a second modem.

As for installing a second modem if that's the route you want to go with, you can definitely install them yourself, but the cable company will have to authorize the second modem in order for it to get an internet signal, so you can't just buy it at the store and plug it in the company has to know about it, and there may be a connection/self installation fee still, but you don't need to pay the expenses of a professional installation as long as you have a coaxial cable in your room.

I prefer not to have wifi in my room floating. I heard that wifi waves can actually alter your brain state and can be detrimental. So it's more than just wanting 105mbps wired to my desktop.
