What Mayor Mare Exactly.. Do?

Now that Twilight is a part-time princess and rules over.. Ponyville.. what does the Mayor do? Mayor Mare wasn't all that bad in my perspective. I feel like this was just Hasbro's way of getting rid of an unimportant character. What do you think?

I guess that she is still the mayor. Twilight is the princess of friendship not the princess of ponyville. Also I don't really Hasbro getting rid of her anytime soon.

I think it depends on what your role you assign to Twilight. If she is focused as Princess of Friendship ... then she wouldn't care about things like tax revenue, and ordinances, yada yada. Mayor Mare still operates as a Mayor. She probably has a few board/council ponies she discusses some things with too.

I agree whole heartedly. Mayor Mare may not appear often, but she does play a very important to the survival of Ponyville's economy and up keep. "But Sadist, she doesn't do shit in the episodes she is in." On the surface it seems like she isn't doing much but do you REALLY think Hasbro would show her full duties at work? It would be boring and not appeal to anyone, kid or adult. It's a cartoon not a Live Action Drama about Mayor Mare's office life.

It seems like Twilight is going to be doing some traveling as part of her royal duties. I imagine that Mayor Mare is going to hold down the fort while shes gone.

She's a public figure so the people can have the delusion of democracy.  It's like Iran.  The Mayor is their "elected" leader and Celestia is the Ayatollah.

Mayor Mare does Mayor things because Mayor Mare is a Mayor. What things Mayor Mare does because she is a Mayor and has to do Mayor things are,i don't know.

I don't think the mayor's job has changed much just because Twilight became a princess. I don't see why it would, honestly. She's still the Ponyville mayor.

If anything the fact that Twilight's new "palace/castle" is in Ponyville is more a matter of convenience, if not moreso circumstance beyond her control. After all, the Tree of Harmony basically just decided to plant the magic "seed" into that particular location just outside Ponyville. Besides, that Ponyville is where Twilight grew up, and moreover befriended the Mane 6 and Discord   . Therefore, its only natural that its an ideal location for Twilight's palace and one of convenience, since barring the destruction of the Golden Oaks Library, she still intends to continue living in Ponyville, so its a convenient place of residence for her.

 

Also, unlike Celestia, Luna or Cadence, Twilight doesn't rule over any particular land. She has plenty of authority, but her domain is over the virtue of friendship spreading harmony. Think of Twilight as more of a spiritual leader, like the Pope.

 

Besides the obvious fact that Twilight was neither elected nor appointed, by Celestia or otherwise as mayor or any other official leader of Ponyville, and she probably lacks the ability to run a town let alone the ambition to do so.

 

If I had to guess, Twilight's domain regarding physical property is her palace, and the small area of land surrounding it, kinda like the Vatican, with Ponyville being Rome surrounding it.

From what I have gathered about the Alicorn Princesses, is that the position doesn't come with any authority itself. Just because you are a princess doesn't mean anything by itself. Twilight hasn't been shown to have any administrative duties, if anything Twilight is a public servant more than a ruler.

Well, seeing how Twilight and crew are going to turn into some sort of jedi council and go travel around the world the Mayor runs the town from an adminstration postion were she is in charge of taxes and town projects and organizes and helps create new laws and fun the always needed public construction. While the other princesses seem to run and rule small kingdoms, or organize diplomatic events, Twilight does not seem to do that in any form.

Mayor Mare ceremonially represents the city, casts the deciding vote in town council meetings in the event of a tie, and occasionally signs proclamations.

 

Twilight was not, as of yet, exactly given executive authority over Ponyville in the same way that Cadance is in charge of the Crystal Empire, so Mayor Mare's not out of a job yet (until the next election, anyway, if she doesn't find a good way to replace destroyed civic infrastructure like the library without it resulting in a massive spike in taxes).

I've said before but it's quite likely that every city, including Canterlot and the Crystal Empire, have a mayor. My point being that having a princess and civil goverment is likely not unique to Ponyville. It's even possible there are governors. That clip, which was great by the way, shows that her duties will be much more active than just governing.
