Oh I thought it was a charity act they did, since we never see them getting paid in bits (at least I haven't). The bits just kind of show up from somewhere. Perhaps they do get paid for their work, it's just behind-the-scenes I guess lol.

There have been a few scenes of them using gems as money.  For example, in the 1 where Spike is caring for the pets while the Mane 6 are away (Bad at names & can't recall which episode)  Off hand, I can't think of any example of paying w anything else.

 

Oh yeah, in Best Night Ever AJ wants to sell her baked goods in Canterlot to earn extra $, but it still doesn't show what they use for cash.

My headconon answers this. Scootaloo's dad is the mayor of Cloudsdale, and her family is rich. She ran away to live in Ponyville as a normal filly. (She's afraid that if anypony at school finds out, they'll think she's a snob like Diamond Tiara) Her mom secretly sends Scoot a weekly allowance.

Fluttershy somewhat has a job (Taking care of animals/nature) but it doesnt pay, just like Twilight's job (Which is looking after a library and being a princess)

Fluttershy runs a non-profit. Don't you remember her big fund raiser in "Filli Vanilli"? Another thing. Librarians do get paid. I know a librarian in real life. She gets paid! Twilight probably received a salary for working as Ponyville's librarian. Most likely, she now has an unlimited royal account now that she's the official Princess of Friendship.
