There we go!!! A very nice argument based wholly on facts and not assumptions.

 

Seriously, though.  We don't have enough evidence to support either side of the argument.  Let's just agree on 50/50 and leave it at that.  Otherwise, we're gonna "go around in circles" forever.

Except that the novel says Celestia was the fighter, not Luna. Luna was stuck on the Moon for 1,000 years, she couldn't have changed much

I know that Nightmare Moon isn't Luna, however, I don't believe her transformation back into Princess Luna has made her forget the dark magic (dunno what to call it) she utilised as Nightmare Moon. I don't know whether Celestia or Luna would win during a fight - Celestia appears to be more experienced, and is the main target of villains such as Chrysalis, though in an all-out fight I do not doubt that Luna would use dark magic against her sister.

Good point. Posting this for anyone who stumbles on this page and forgets the Season 3 Premier. 

 

 

 

While we have seen Twilight use a Dark Magic spell (assuming that spell cast on the potion in Princess Twilight Sparkle was Dark Magic) we have not yet seen Luna do this. That's not to say she doesn't have the ability, but you still need to make an assumption that she can that is not fully supported by show canon.

@Hive King, Personally, I don't mind the headcanon leading one to assume Luna may have Dark Magic knowledge in a fanfic story (provided the story is well written but I digress). I'm all for personal interpretation like this, but it has serious flaws if someone tries to argue this point as a fact. It is a bit of a leap to go from a more canonical inference of Luna having awareness of Dark Magic to all of a sudden being a Dark Magic user to then being adept at it. It is a much larger leap to say she can match Celestia in this ability. It's hard to have a debate on that without acknowledging the flaws. Princess of the Night does not equal Dark Magic user. And this is coming from someone who likes the character quite a bit.

Sunbutt has already kicked Moonbutt so hard that she was stuck on the moon for a thousand years once. A thousand years rotting away, while Sunbutt got older, stroner, and wiser? Sunbutt could do it again, and it would be easier the second time, me thinks.

Celestia, because of the Season 4 premiere, and because she's the older and wiser. ^^
