Could Gen. 5 ever live up to 4?

Let's be real here, no matter how many of us would prefer gen.4 to continue, there will come a time where the show will end. However that does not mean the MLP franchise will end and gen. 4 would likely be followed by gen. 5, and if that were to happen could gen. 5's roster of ponies live up to the Mane 6? And with villains like, Chrysalis, Tirek or even Discord, could gen. 5's surpass them? While I am certain many bronies will be sustained by the fan works, others however may want more of the show. I can only hope or fandom has impacted Hasbro and DHX enough to keep us in mind while creating gen. 5 while also using gen.4 as inspiration. While some may have enjoyed the older gen,'s I feel that the formula that Gen. 4 uses would be a far better template to gather inspiration from rather than the older gen.'s.

While G4 will eventually end, it seems way to successful to end any time soon and it feels like Hasbro will milk it for all it is worth. I doubt G5 would be as popular as G4 and I think Hasbro knows this. At beat G5 will try it's best to emulate everything it can from G4 with the hopes of trying to catch lightning in a bottle a second time.

Well gen 5 could be good although I’d be up for Hasbro trying something new as opposed to making it like gen 4.

Still I think the current G4 and spin offs aren’t going anywhere so I’m not thinking too much about what’s next.

I agree with the posts above.

Will they even make G5? Maybe they'll continue G4 for a long time or create a "G4.5"...

I mean, we have so many young characters like the CMC that they could make a 4.5 from :)!

G4 will keep going till it stops making Hasbro money, so I'm guessing it will probably be for a while longer as it's there biggest things atm!

I don't think hasbro would be stupid enough to do anything like G3 again, although one thing I am worried about is that they will just rehash FIM because they know it will make money. And I couldn't really care less about the toys.

No matter how hard I try these ponies will simply never leave me.

I don't think the appropriate question to ask is "Could G5 be better?" Yes, because G4 isn't perfect; of course it could be better. The question that is better asked is, "Would it be better?" and "What approach would be necessary to make it better than G4?"

Unfortunately, I don't have a definitive answer for either of those questions. If Hasbro decided to capitalize on the success of G4 by making what is, essentially, a weaker clone of it, it's still possible for G5 to be as if not more successful than G4 simply because of its resemblance to it, so in that way it would be better in terms of sales and viewership. But if by "better" we mean that it has stronger storytelling and characters in general, the only way I could see that being possible is it running a spin off and, while drawing inspiration from G4, ultimately telling a different story, with a different cast and even, possibly, a different setting.

G4 itself takes a lot of ideas from the previous generations and blends them together with a sprinkle of its own uniqueness in the form of quirkier characters and a mixture of SoL and adventure, which is, in a way, like G2 and G1 placed in a blender. Of course, that doesn't mean Friendship is Magic doesn't have something that makes it uniquely itself, because it most certainly does, with its cast being far more diverse than either of those generations. Rather, what I mean to say is there are aspects of these generations that are clearly successful and G5 would benefit from taking these same aspects, but at the same time making its own twist to them.

Personally, I don't see G4 ending any time soon very likely. It has become so successful that I think it will probably go the same route as Star Trek, will keep on building it's universe and go into the lives of different characters.

However, I feel there might be that relapse time for the franchise, when it starts to go back towards G3. Debatably Equestria Girls already started this, but I feel there may come a point when this franchise produces it's Batman and Robin. Then, after that, It will reboot the franchise and bring it closer to the style of FIM.

It would probably be very similar, (If it get's rebooted and this happens), albeit with a different animation style and slightly different tone.

It's hard telling what direction they'll go with G5. They may do something similar to FIM, or take a new direction. I'll stick with the series until the very end, even if it crosses over other generations.

And to answer your question, absolutely. As good as G4 is, there's still room for improvement.

I imagine when they make G5 they will reuse the same mane cast. At this point they have become a legacy. Much like how Optimus Prime and Megatron appear in every generation of Transformers. Only Transformers had a shorter run time when they become a legacy.

I completely agree, these characters have become too well loved and known for them to ever be replaced. These are the MLP leads now, and I will not be interested in G5 if the mane 6 don't make a return like in Transformers.

I'm open for a G5 if it follows basic reboot rules, just depends if it's well written and if it's a good show.

Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash were reincarnated from G3 to G4 and it turned out for the best. I can only imagine how they would redesign them for G5. Would they have the same design and personality or would they get a complete rehaul? Oh, the possibilities...

I think they would be kept similar, they might be changed up a little bit here and there. Perhaps Rarity would be less vane and upper class and more into modern styles of fashion and shows her generous side a bit more. Or maybe Pinkie Pie could be a little less crazy and random and it could focus more on her fun side and optimism.

I want to see Gen5 a fusion of Gen1 and 4.  Like an adventure serial with tons of bad guys and stakes, but up to the writing quality of 4.

Less slice of life.  Would be different but if written well could stand well on it's own as a pony series.

I'm not really asking for it to be better, I am simply asking for it to be as good a G4. I would not mind if we are presented with entirely new characters, locations, enemies, heck even a new story, as long as the same depth and care that went into FIM can live on into future generations.

While its true Optimus Prime has became a staple of Transformers, each iteration still introduce new Transformers into the main cast. Whether we like it or not, it is highly possible that, Rainbow Dash, Pinkie Pie or even Twilight will be feature along side a new cast of ponies.

How the heck did you not have an brohoof until now? I love your ideas.

I'm probably in the minority when I say this, but I'd like to see a series that has more action and is more story based in G5. Don't get me wrong, I love the Slice of Life episodes, but I'm always up for change. This is also going to ruffle some feathers, but I'd a setting that is a bit more modern and realistic. I feel like it'd make the series more relatable in a lot of aspects. That's just my opinion though.

That's something we can agree on, then. :)

This show does come down to being a glorified toy commercial, but the thought and effort that was put into G4 is absolutely wonderful and I too would like to see it again in future generations.

Personally, I think MLP as a franchise lends well to SoL episodes because of the target audience that it has. Action-oriented episodes are great, but we do have to keep in mind that it's geared toward little girls, and too much action might become boring for them to watch. MLP garnered a lot of its popularity due to the feel-good vibe that the show has which is due in part to those episodes. That doesn't mean I would be against an increase in those kinds of episodes but rather that I think that SoL is part of the core of what makes MLP the kind of girly show that it is.

Maybe, maybe not, maybe will never even be created.

I think that whatever comes next with MLP, something like this phenomenon, will never be repeated again.

If they use the same animation style, and try using the same formula. A reboot of the series using different themes and characters would have the potential to work. If they made their characters look more like real life horses, made it overly pink and cutesi and made it all about feminism and frollicking in the meadows like the previous gens were with constant horrible laughter and bad voice acting.

It will fail.
