gaming Stereotypes on certain gamers?

"You play Pokemon?  You must be...  In your thirties." xD  That's not the actual stereotype; that leans more towards reality.

The one that bugs me most is how younger gamers who refuse to give classic games a chance (or spend five minutes on the first level before giving up and labeling the title crap) love to bust out the word "nostalgia."  "You only like those games 'cause nostalgia!"  (Not to mention, "nostalgia" for some younger gamers is their previous console. x3 )  Nostalgia, though?  I never stopped playing Super Mario games and other classics.  I can't long for something in my distant past...  If I experienced it just yesterday lol (and I did play the Indiana Jones cart on my RetroDuo just yesterday).

Admittedly, I do miss the days where local multiplayer (with family and friends who didn't hate your guts) and now-fading / less appreciated genres were much more common.  Run n' gun, platforming, turn-based RPGS, falling block puzzle games; I still enjoy these types of games.  I absolutely cannot stand the likes of CoD.  If you like it, you like it, but CoD and other relatively unimaginative war-based FPS titles don't equal an enjoyable gaming experience for me.

The stereotypes that says that people who plays Minecraft are dumb kids.

I can totally deny that by saying that you can do a lot of things in this game, Redstone being the best exemple of something that requires to be intelligent in order to master it perfectly.

In addition, the ones who tends to use this stereotype judge this game by the get go: The game being too simple looking with non-attractive graphics  fits with dumb kids personnality. <--False! They just don't see what has the game to offer.

" oh, you like JRPGs? What are you, a weeaboo?"

.... okay so my avatar and name don't exactly help my case. Believe me, I know. But just because I love great games like Legend of dragoon or Tales of vesperia/symphonia, doesnt mean that I absolutely worship a culture different from my own along with trying to learn Japanese XD.

In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God, hovering above? At least it is true, that man has no control... Even over his own will.

I'm on the flip side of that, "You don't like JRPGs? You must not be devote to games then, casual."

It is not a stereotype that most call of duty players are 13 and under. A lot are. It's just the rest that try to play the game without hearing whining or abusing.

Minecraft isn't for 9 year olds, i never hear that though. We all play minecraft (my friends irl).

I just can't stand JRPGs so people assume I can't stay in a game that requires an attention span longer than Candy Crush (Sorry mobile gamers). When in reality I have sat for 26 hours straight playing Skyrim...

really? I don't know too many people who do play them, so I often get called on it. I will say that there is also another stereotype with it...

" ewwww, you only like mainstream JRPGs"

I've heard that before. I when I did, I died a little due to faith in humanity being lost XD

I played Minecraft, and I'm 30+.  My adult brother, his girlfriend, and my cousin played it.  We all played together lol.  Aside from survival, the game is all about exploration and creativity.  All ages should be able to appreciate that.

I don't like stereotypes like being a bigot, or playing certain Japanese games somehow correlates to being some pervert, or being some sort of loser. I don't like those kinds of stigmas.

Your post about being more hardcore than people that started playing shooters later reminds me of this:

img-3581073-1-2014-06-23-gamercat_80.jpg

Stuff like that comic has me always thinking that being a gamer or not does not necessarily depend on what you play, but rather, how you play it. I think those who play mobile games are probably more likely to be ones that aren't as serious in their gaming as it may not even be a hobby to them, but I don't believe the platform or game is directly relevant. I don't think the game itself qualifies anyone imo.

Just felt like throwing that out there.

I think this video explains the definition of gamer very good.

Realistically though, this will never be the actual definition, because people will feel left out. So I would call everyone who plays games a gamer.

That's why I consider myself a game enthusiast. Which is what I would call the definition in the video.

So taking the points in the video, and replacing gamer with game enthusiast:

A game enthusiast is someone who has a vast amount of experience spread among many games, and is passionate about games, game mechanics and quality.

If you play CoD for 1000 hours, you aren't a game enthusiast, you are more like a CoD enthusiast, or rather a gamer.

I just have one word to throw into the argument, and that's "Gamergate."

Now the rest of the internet is starting to see us as psychopaths who threaten to rape women.

I don't think just playing games makes one a gamer, it's if they do it as a hobby that makes them a gamer. I also think it's possible to be a gamer even if they are casual since I feel that gaming is their hobby, even if they are not terribly passionate about it (that might be a little too obvious).

I do like the term of gaming enthusiast. It's like someone who enjoys gaming and probably buys memorabilia and has a bunch of games and consoles and spends at least a fair amount of time playing them.

If the parts of the gaming press wasn't so focused on pushing agendas and avoiding responsibility for displaying corrupt behavior, then we wouldn't have things like another negative stereotype and an awful episode of Law & Order: SVU.

Sure, but I think it's possible to try to change games media without murder, rape, and stalking threats. Some of the #Gamergate stuff I've seen on twitter is VERY squicky.

Thing is, some Gamergate people are doing things other than harassment and threats, but the media by and large is only reporting one thing, which is only proving some people right about there being problems in the media. Only reporting negativity that supposedly comes from one side of the situation is a rather dishonest thing to do. It's like they don't care as much about spreading the truth, but more about agendas and ratings/site traffic. That kind of reporting can give a lot of people the wrong ideas and maybe even cause them to make the wrong choices in their respective lives.

But, let's be honest here, the fact of the matter is that harassment shouldn't be happening, period, and as long as it is, it's going to be reported on, because people don't read good news. People like to hear about the worst of the worst.

Ah, gamers. Even in the midst of a world where people in general dislikes us for so many reasons, we'd still argue to death like a civil war.

I'm pretty sure the PCMR counts as stereotype, and I hate Hate HATE people like this. They brag about their specs and pros and deemed others peasants like we're in a fascism where PC player are kings and others are citizens.

Then there's those feminism in gaming (I watched PBS Game/Show to understand a bit about these controversy). Seriously, some people are so stupid, I am in the verge of losing hope in this area. Are you people saying women are not allowed to play games? That's like saying Women Volleyball/Basketball/Football/etc shouldn't exist, since at its core, sports are games too.

One more that cringes me is that FPS gamer are dangerous since they are more likely to kill IRL. The media wants someone to blame and the blamed must be big enough to start a fire in the internet and we got the blame and the people believed it. Seriously??
