Earlier today, Nintendo announced a new dedicated gaming hardware platform codenamed NX, along with a partnership with DeNA to make mobile games. NX is Nintendo's next generation console, however they aren't ready to reveal much until next year. NX is most likely the successor to the Wii U

Can't say I'm surprised. Nintendo is always working on the next generation of hardware. Plus, the Wii U is selling horribly. Hopefully the NX breakes through for them. Thoughts?

@,

The Wii U is actually selling better than the Xbox One and PS4. I recently got one myself and it's the best console I've ever had.

On another note, this console does look cool but it'll take like 5 years to come out, so we must wait til' then.

Uh...no its not. The systems install base hasn't even broke 10 million yet. PS4 is over 20 million and Xbox One is probably 13 million. I love the system too, but objectively its a sales failure. Also, new systems are I'm R & D as soon as the current one launches. This NX will be out next fall if not 2017.

*sigh* Nintendo is really beginning to crack under the pressure. What a sad, sad day.

"We'll never do that"

"Just kidding, we're doing it now"

Cell phone games, Nintendo? Really? I'm scared now, because I hate, hate, hate the touch screen interface for games. If this ends up cannibalizing their handheld market, even in the long-term, I will be really mad.

You know the 3DS was a big success... A whole lot of my friends - pretty much ALL of my close friends - wanted one and got one. Even those who never got a DS. Now, they're just going to think "Oh, I can play these games on my smartphone" and pass over the next handheld.

EDIT: No, actually I'm confused on what's going on here... The NX is a smart device? Well, either way... Not good news. =/

Wanan know what would be funny, if Codename NX was actually the name of it. It be like the Kids Next Door.

Oh, and if you're going the mobile route, please don't name it "We're Trying to be the iPad but failing."

I like the name NX too. Safe to say the next 2D or 3D Mario is going to be an NX launch title?

I think that NX stands for something. Nintendo X... or something along the lines of that. I'm kind of nervous about the possibility that they'll take the mobile game route, but I guess it's too early to judge. All I can say is I can't wait what it's going to be like, and see if it'll outsell the Wii U or not.

Hopefully the real name won't be "Wii __"

Also I son't expect to hear more about the console till 2016 at the earliest, and launch in 2017

As for their mobile games, I just hope the don't waste good ideas on mobile games like Capcom or Square do

It's already confirmed that it won't be talked about much until 2016. I also hope that it goes for $300 USD. If its indeed a home console.

@,

I didn't mean overall, I meant in the past year / this year or so, I believe. Sorry for the confusion.

This is interesting. Hopefully it doesn't kill development for WiiU, as the console is still relatively new. More or less.

If it comes out in say 2017 it'd be the typical five year gap between Nintendo home consoles. And as much as I love Wii U, the reality is the system as a product to make Nintendo money is a total did

Augh; I'm not sure if I can be too happy about this, but I can't really blame Nintendo for this decision. As it stands the Wii U just can't compete. The Xbone and PS4 are running away, PC is still a viable option, and we even have the Steam Machine coming later this year.

I don't know; I hope it isn't too early for them...

@,

If we're talking about the steam machine; it's gonna fail. The people that want the steam machine already have steam, so why are they going to build a new console?

Honestly while I am in a wait & see pattern in regards to the Steam Machine, I'm not disagreeing with you. It has little chance of success.

However, never say never sometimes. :)

Eh, only the codename is known I guess, so I see little reason to speculate much about it yet. :derp:

I believe it will definitely have some degree of compatability with their planned mobile services as well though, and I think they also said they are planning some sort of architecture to tie all their coming services together, so I think that's worth looking forward to as well. :rarity:

I saw this yesterday and there seems to be a lot of controversy going on at GAF and other forums.

I think this is a good idea, the handheld market is shrinking and it would make Nintendo a lot of money to widen their characters to a more broader audience. There are millions of people who own an Android or iOS smartphone and they would be able to play spin of Mario, Pokemon and Zelda games. Animal Crossing is perfect for mobile. I'd like to play Pokemon on my phone.

The Wii U just cant compete at all with the Xbox One and PS4, so it makes sense they're making a new console.

Nintendo, it's kind of a bit too early to release information of a new console. This kind of seem like Nintendo is losing faith in the Wii U, as it really has some potential if you put great games on the console.

With the mobile side of the announcement, it does seem like a pretty good business decision, as they may be able to develop more revenue to create better stuff.

I also hope that the hardware that this console has will be up to par with the next generation of consoles, so that there can possibly be more third party support.

If Nintendo actually manage to pull it off, then props to them!

I think a lot of people out there prefer the console to mobile device any day. I wouldn't mind it, but the only hurdles I see are the controls, and a few other unusual things. Well, considering the Wii was a bit bizarre when it first came out, I think Nintendo seems more creative than other companies in how they market their games. It does show some potential for a big majority of people. Or..It will be a massive flop and fail horribly.

Well, that's just my personal opinion anyway.
