MLP FIM: Do people complain too much?

Tom Snyder

Recommended Posts

I watched a video on how bronies react to episodes, and in the comments they say we bitch to much if they don't do what we want them too. But i care not for fanservice or the like; I'm content with what they have been delivering. The story writing has gotten better since season 1, i've enjoyed every single episode with no complaints. But i do sometimes over analyze, but i do so to get your opinion on my thoughts. It doesn't matter if the show is big or not to me; all that matters is that they keep trying to improve. I don't think bronies complain that much as anime fans seem to do, but hey, that's just my opinion, so don't take it seriously.

In anime, i see a lot of bad story writing, and it never seems to improve. While some shows are really great, others just fall flat.

Yes, I do believe fans complain too much. A lot of the time I feel like people are just trying to look for things to complain about

Maybe so, but in anime, its the same thing as us. This puts a lot of pressure on the writers to fulfill some of the things fans want, but i don't see the reason too. While i like BG Ponies, i don't really see them as something to complain about or the story whatsoever.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with voicing your dislikes, but it does bother me when people nitpick every little thing. If you're really a fan of the show these things shouldn't be a huge deal. It's especially annoying when people forget that we're not the target demographic and expect the show to cater specifically to us.

In my opinion being a fan means liking something despite certain faults, rather than holding it to ridiculously high standards.

It's this way with most fandoms. The only thing that seems to unite some groups is a sense of tribalism against another group (see Android v iOS, and DC v Marvel).

But as Rarity implied ... nothing wrong with a little complaining. The reverse is an echo chamber that stifles substantive discussion. Not good either.

I think they're expecting too much such as darker grittier themes, more fast action, or more fight scenes like in the one in the previous episode. I see this as a more relaxing show for the most part not on the level of Avatar, Korra, or most anime. This show still has to stay appropriate to young girls you know because it's also selling toys to young girls even if some of the kids watching a while are getting older. And this show is rated TV-Y, and bumping it up would be risky.

My thoughts are on certain aspects, like bullying, greed, the like. But complaints like: "They shouldn't have made Twily an alicorn." that's weak in arguments, and doesn't end well with her fans. Now as a example from anime:  "Naruto sucks, or One piece doesn't do that or this." what has this fandom and otaku come too? Might as well call it WW3 while we're at it.

 I think anyone from any fandom can have the capability to complain too much. A lot of people complain because it gets a greater rise out of people than it does not to complain.

It's a fandom aspect; in the end. Look at the Sonic fandom. It seemed like there was an endless list of people complaining about this or that.

Hell, I come from the Spyro fandom and there has ben plenty of complaints there as well. Original trilogy vs. A Hero's Tail, Original trilogy vs. Legend vs. Skylanders, etc.

Hell, does Star Wars vs. Star Trek ring a bell?

It's just the nature of fandom groups. :)

Its just that people need to see the bigger picture and see a show for what it is; a kids show doesn't need to be dark/gritty, if you want to do it in a fic, that's fine. But don't ask for such thngs in a cartoon series.

This fandom complains and over-analyzes and "hates" so frequently that I sometimes wonder if MLP:FIM's fans even enjoy the show.  Every episode is an opportunity to whip out the magnifying glass, target and criticize this or that pony, and just outright complain that things didn't proceed in precisely the way you'd hoped or expected.

If you enjoy the show, just watch the damned show! >_<  Or if you want to enjoy it, look for things to like under that magnifying glass.  If you simply don't enjoy the show, go watch anything else.

What raises this question is not the presence of complaining, but the nature of it. The fact that there is complaining is inevitable; that happens in almost any fandom. The real problem here is whether or not the things they are complaining about are actually worth it. For example, uproar over wrecking common fanon is a for an arguably minor and less justifiable reason compared to criticism over the show screwing up a moral or making an unfortunately implied slight at a group of people.

What do you mean by that? I understood the nature of it, just not the reasons.

The difference is if this is over one person or a specific group's interpretation of the show being wrecked, or the show itself being factually wrecked.

If the show screws up fanon, it's factually not doing anything wrong, just taking the show in a different direction than what certain fans expected. It's fully within the show's right to do that and people should just move on from it.

However, if the show screws up a moral or makes implied slights at groups of people, like "Feeling Pinkie Keen" did with oversimplifying the faith vs science debate, then discussion would be justified so that the show knows not to make the same mistake again.

Some issues may not be so clear-cut, like Twilicorn for example. To some, it's the show taking the next step towards becoming bigger and better. To others, it's sending a mixed message to the audience and moving the show away from its core message.

The whole thing is if it's an objective (true or untrue) or subjective (subject to opinion) matter. If people confuse the two, it's bound to lead to trouble, and that's the basic reason why we have the notion that people "complain too much".

Well, first of all i have to say that this show is not perfect, so saying that it never has any flaws would be quite ignorant. I like to look at certain episodes and 1 or 2 reviewers, so i can judge which once are good or bad.

At the same time though, i can't stand overly critical reviewers, who take their free time and try to find every single possible flaw at the series, no matter how small or insignificant it might be. Like i said, i like to look into it aswell, but you would never find me looking at it so deep, because to be honest, it would ruin the joy of watching the show for me.

I just want to watch a cartoon with cute ponies doing cute things. Is that too much to ask?

My big issue is that pseudo-intellectual cynicism is what passes for "analysis" now.  People seem to feel that nitpicking minor details about characterization or fan service makes them deep thinkers when really it doesn't.  They aren't bringing any enlightenment to the audience.  They are being eloquent whiners.

I'm not saying you can't point out you feel is personally wrong, but when you say "Pinkie Pie is acting a little too silly > Segways into slippery slope of grand claims about the show sinking in quality and Lauren rolling in her grave" you're not bringing any light to the discussion.

Which reviewers are usually like that?

Digibro got like that during his later reviews.  Though I think he has a lot of problems with the brony community (Saying that he wanting all the people criticizing him in a comment section to "burn alive so he could laugh" was the last straw for me.  Chadrocco of Thatguywiththeglasses introduced a lot of people to the series... and is now known for fighting with bronies on twitter, hating on every new episode...  which is sad because his Mysterious Mare-Do-Well episode said that he didn't like the episode but he didn't want to ruin anyone else's enjoyment.  Celestia help you if you claim to like anything post season 2.

 Whaaat? Oh that's low. If he's able to make criticism of the show, then he might as well take some of himself.

Just because you're a fan of something doesn't mean you enjoy everything a medium of entertainment puts out, nor does it mean you should expect to as that's a really, really high expectation.

Given the nature of this website as a discussion board, namely the show discussion area, people are likely to share their thoughts and ideas on the topic at hand, and not all of them will be positive - but then again, this is a discussion board, and that's just the way things work.

Just because someone doesn't like something doesn't automatically make it complaining, at least from my point of view. It just means they weren't a fan of it, and this is just life in general - you don't have to be a fan of it if you don't like it, nor should you :please: If you want to say you didn't like something and there's an appropriate topic for talking about the subject at hand, then fire away.

Also what's wrong with liking everything? I enjoyed it all tbh.

Absolutely nothing. But then again, that doesn't mean everyone else should have to :P
