To get the first glance at your happy pony that you have in your mind but your drawings skills maybe cant do justice to the character I'd suggest you to use some of the pony creators in the internet like this one from General Zoi for example http://generalzoi.deviantart.com/art/Pony-Creator-Full-Version-254295904

I would suggest lowering self inserts if your doing an OC, but if its a persona, then its fine.

This video seems legit in helping you if you want a few tips. But you can also ask others for their opinions as well.

You don't have to stick to what it is but its a good way to start like on colors and etc or even a loose base for hair styles!
