gaming Selling of mods: What could possibly go wrong?

Which ones? Again, instead of assuming the worst its best to at least wait.

A very large amount of mods are likely to stay on nexus (Or go on the workshop AND nexus. Which I fail to see the problem with).

Either because they think it needs to be free as a matter of principle or because they can't see it being profitable OR because they can't stand the level of vitriol the community will throw at them.

Either way, its nowhere near the death of modding or whatever. This is just an overreaction >.<

For every paid for mod on steam, another modder will make a free version of the mod just to spite the modder xD

Also psh. I doubt anybody will watch it but

Pretty good response to it (tl;dw calm down. System is crap, but modding isn't quite dead yet : P)

Because it was the same with DLC's too.

And what do we have now? It's standard for many games and better, content of it is often purposely cut out during the developement just to sell it.

They will do something, just as long as it brings them profit.

And don't forget the stealing too. Valve said they will only rely on community flagged actions regarding stolen content. Now image when the workshop contains hundred if not thousands of mods...

Basically even the free modder will be screwed since someone could simply upload their stuff and make money with it (which is from what i heard not bad either. one set of armor managed to get the modder 500$ on one day).

But you're assuming Bethesda are greedy bastards. Let's not forget that the whole deal with DLC started at EA and Ubisoft. Bethesda has never hold gameplay randsom, but they always expanded on the original game. If this was EA that introduced this plan, I would have the same worries you have right now

Modding is dead because some people sell them?

So does that mean that art is dead because some people accept paid commissions?

Or that gaming is dead because most developer sell their games?

It's their work. If they want people to pay for it, they have all the right to. If they're doing "for the people", they will still release for free, either on Workshop or Nexusmods or whatever for it.

Now if you want to start some sort of conspiracy theory about the Illuminati working with Bethesta to flood Nexusmods' server farm with acid to force people to buy mods make money to buy mind control devices or some other absurdity like that, go ahead. But we all know that's not going to happen.

And please don't even BRING that DLC nonsense out.

Hello everyone

You know, I supported this. This gave a modder their due for their hard work (unless it's one of those standard items), and this would encourage them to make more. My only problem? It's revenu. I understand each games have different revenues, but Skyrim is just low, but I'm assuming it's only because Valve and Bethesda was a part of this too. If it were TF2, Half Life, or something, I'm sure it's revenue would've been better.

But now, it's been removed, removing an opportunity for a modder who worked hard to get even a reward for cash.

I've been thinking a bit about it all, and I think that this whole issue has really brought to attention just how big of a monopoly Valve has on PC gaming. Nobody has really ever worried about the monopolies' effect on gaming until now, because Valve just turned the tables with a new move that has made people aware just how dominant they are in the market, and how easily they can monetize every bit of it.

Think of it like a kingdom. People in modern society generally don't like the idea of being ruled by one king, but if the king is fair and leads the country to prosperity, then people are going to be praising him instead of going against him. As soon as that king turns corrupt, people who were previously happy under his rule will possibly rebel.

It's the same situation with Valve. They've had almost complete control over PC gaming for years upon years, but everyone still loved them because they were a great company that did almost no wrong. Now that they've taken such a blatant move towards milking something for everything it is worth, modding no less, people have already grown incredibly weary. Everywhere I look, people who were Valve supporters a few days ago are now seeking alternatives and bad-mouthing Valve as an unhealthy and harmful monopoly. Do I think this is a bad thing? Of course not. Valve has been great for years, but this recent event has shown us all just what they are capable of doing with this tight grip on the market.

I sense a change is coming. People are still mad and weary of Valve even after they've withdrawn their recent mod system, and people want alternatives to avoid a stagnant market. Among these people, I think many will start using services like GOG and of course the upcoming Galaxy. Competition. Valve has opened the floodgates, and if enough people act I think we can see a big change on our hands.

^ don't listen to this guy ^
