music Something I don't appreciate about metal these days

I've always loved metal and I don't mind it being slow but the last ten years or so I've noticed bands that were really hardcore stuff twenty or thirty years ago got calmer and it's like "Wtf? You were better before!"

Case in point:

Iron Maiden

Bon Jovi

I mean, I like some of their current stuff but I definitely love their past stuff more simply because it's more in tune with my musical preferences.

Not only did they get more calm, bands coming up listened to their old stuff and said, "Let's make this heavier."

Perfect storm.

Ah yes, Avenged Sevenfold. I liked stuff like Scream and Second Heartbeat and then they start getting a little softer in later ones. I mean, I like City of Evil but it's definitely calmer than their other stuff.

I'm a huge A7X fan, and I really like all the albums, except maybe the self-titled one. Most of the songs are just kinda boring to me compared to Waking the Fallen/City of Evil stuff.

Considering the majority of bands I listen to that are a part of the metal genre, I would kinda have to disagree with this. Destruction, Sodom, Kreator (to an extent) have all been putting out some class material, and with Kreator's new album coming out this June, and with Sodom's In War and Pieces being released a few years back, I'm stoked.

Same goes for Testament who's releasing an album this year, staying heavy like in The Formation of Damnation, but now adding the mighty GENE HOGLAN! on drums. And Overkill (oh god, Overkill...) had released an album just weeks ago! They haven't slowed down at all! And one last point I'd like to bring up; Coroner. They reformed this year and may release an album! If it sounds anything like Grin, No More Color and Mental Vortex...

Well I admit I don't know nearly as much about metal as you do. Most of what I know is either played on the radio or featured in some sort of video game. lol

Hey, the only difference between the both of us is that I did a bit of digging. Now, you do have a point though - with bands releasing calmer stuff that is supposed to sound heavy (Megadeth, Anthrax, METALLICA) but I can gurrantee you, for every soft record you can find by older bands, there's probably three heavier ones out there. Onslaught's Sounds of Violence, Meshuggah's Koloss, Devin Townsend's Deconstruction (yes, I had to mention him), Hell's Human Remains, Fear Factory's Mechanize/The Industrialist (to be released soon), Cannibal Corpse's Torture, the list goes on and on dude!

:P Well I had no doubt of that but the point is that bands that I like are getting calmer in a lot of places. It doesn't matter that there is still hard metal out there, the problem I have is that bands that were heavy before calm down. THOSE bands calm down when I wanted more of the harder stuff from THEM. xD

Here's a shit joke for you - is it because they're letting old age get to them? :P

I like that song, but not as much as the older stuff.

Actually, that's my favorite song from the self-titled album besides Critical Acclaim

Killswitch Engage had a softer sound with Howard Jones but he still had a damn good voice. I like Jones' KSE more than Jesse's screaming. Wonder how they'll do now that Jesse's back with them.

You know what's worse? When bands profess to be heavy or hard and you get all hyped and they look and sound like this onstage:

:( :( :( :( :(

WTF? That's when I started to only listen to underground metal. Thank you, Meshuggah, for pulling me out of the morass of the radio back in '99, when I bought Chaosphere. And thank you, Guitar World for telling me about them, before the internet was good!

And if you like old Bon Jovi, Judas Priest, or Iron Maiden, there are a bunch of euro-power-metal bands that you may want to consider...I'll let you find them... :P

That's disillusion combined with money hypnotism. OR, just plain lying.

Here, have a band that sounds exactly like they should live. I've seen them four different times over the years, and they killed it every single one.

My issue with metal these days is that a lot of the new bands are too heavy for my taste. There's a limit to how much I can take, unless their a technical band. That I can respect more on the grounds of being a musician. Also any classic metal I usually enjoy no matter how heavy it gets. Other than that, I guess I just wimp out on newer super heavy songs.

Thanks for sharing! But it's not my style, bro. They sound a little metalcore for me, and I stay away from anything with "core" anywhere near it, unless it's Napalm Death.

Good musicians, though.

Nah, I like thrash, death and some blackened death; I think I just prefer lower voices and atonal guitars...unless it's Arch Enemy, who have higher voices and tonal guitars, but I love them anyway.

But if you want a band that looks exactly how they sound...

Have you tried any folk/pagan metal? Einherjer, Finntroll, Amon Amarth, Eluveitie?

Or some Euro-power-metal? Hammerfall, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius?

For being an American, I'm such a Euro-metal snob, LOL!

Napalm Death? Metalcore? Are you out of your mind?

I'd also like to add some Progressive Metal, or even late 70's Progressive Rock? I know its a bit of a stretch, but some of the stuff is pretty heavy. Even classic 70's Heavy Metal will work as well.

Grindcore, dude, grindcore. It's the only "core" genre I can get away with listening to. I in no way meant to insinuate that Napalm Death was metalcore, haha!

I apologize, I was generalizing the post too much, again. Yeah, apparently Napalm Death is grindcore. Understandable when you're releasing songs that are under 4 seconds. :P
