spoiler Was Troublehooves a reference to To Kill a Mockingbird?

Maybe it's my imagination, but was Troublehooves meant to be a reference to To Kill a Mockingbird? He was set up as a foreboding presence at first, but later turns out to be a shy yet kind, gentle giant who was just simply dealt a bad lot in life, much like Mockingbird's Boo Radley.

FYI spoiler prefix added. :)

But yeah; it's good match. I never saw "To Kill a Mockingbird" but it's a nice reference.

Saw?

You're killing me Smalls! Read the book. Forget Gregory Peck.

That is an interesting observation. I just finished it a little bit ago and there are some similarities. I suppose the CMC are a combo of Dill, Jem, Scout, and Atticus?

Bonus points for connecting a FiM story to a Pulitzer winning novel!

not really these two stories are more horizontal than parallel.... sure there are some similarities but not major ones to say that "Applelooza's Most Wanted" is in reference to "Kill a Mockingbird"
