I think we should all hang gay flags out on Independence Day and get all gay.

Well, they kinda have to ban it. It killed nine people in that church.

They didn't have to ban the flag; if this story is true (which I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it is at this point). This is nothing more than censorship spurred on by nonsensical emotionalism and political correctness. The confederate flag didn't kill nine people. It's a flag -- a rectangular piece of cloth. It can not stir in someone's heart the thought to murder people. It's the evilness of people hearts that cause them to do such heinous things. As much as people don't like it, that flag is a part of our history as a country. Matter of fact, it was once the flag of the whole nation. And by banning it, people are trying to wipe away and change history; this is wrong. People should have the right to fly the confederate flag if they so choose. This ban (if it's true) would be a breach of people constitutional rights.

@, echoing my thoughts.

Also, even though a lot of news websites say that the flag represents rascism, that is false. I kind of expected that the news websites would be siding against the confederate flag, given the current political trends. While I don't have the time or the motivation to write up an argument for my point, I believe that research material is at everyone's fingertips.

I believe Ridley was being facetious.

And nothing of value was lost.

What should they replace it with in history class?

Yep, came off its stand and fell right on 'em. When will we learn the dangers of making such heavy flags!?

I'm not exactly an expert in American History (I'm a Canadian) but wasn't that just a battle flag for certain states. I was under the impression that these three were the official flags of the CSA.

Wasn't expecting a serious answer to that question, and I stand by my point that the flag has historical significance, but... Yes, actually. Touche.

EDIT: Actually, even the battle flag was slightly different. It was a square version, as opposed to the rectangular one that the Duke boys put on their car.

It killed nine people in that church.

Completely, absolutely, dead wrong.

A person killed nine other people in that church. He did it because he was a hateful bigot who chose to destroy others' lives rather than make something of his own.

The Confederate flag, like any other flag, like any other symbol, is subjective. It represents different ideas to different people. Far more wrongs have been committed, and more innocent blood shed, under the flag of a united America than that of a rebel faction that existed for four years. And yet, no one is saying we should ban the current American flag because of the South Carolina shooting and the hate it represents. Why?

Simple. Because the Confederate flag is an easy target. Some people simply pin all the disgraces and abuses of slavery and its legacy on that one symbol because it's easier to comprehend...and easier to destroy. They can't simply get rid of the ingrained potential for primal hatred in the still-evolving human mind, so they conjure up a scapegoat. I can see politicians and social justice warriors everywhere trampling each other to jump on that bandwagon: "let's just ban the Confederate flag!" Politicians love it because it can be done within an electoral term (as long as they can sidestep that pesky First Amendment), and people who still believe everything they were told in community college love it because they don't know any better.

But we all should know better. It's no solution at all. It's a band-aid. The flag isn't the real problem and it never was. Americans will never learn from our tragedies if we don't face them. And to do that, we must stop falling for politically correct charades and grapple with what's beneath the surface instead.

Yeah...THE FLAG killed people. No it wasn't some extremist that killed them, it was a flag that gained super-intelligence and killed its victims by wrapping itself around nine-people.

Wasn't expecting a serious answer to that question, and I stand by my point that the flag has historical significance, but... Yes, actually. Touche.

EDIT: Actually, even the battle flag was slightly different. It was a square version, as opposed to the rectangular one that the Duke boys put on their car.

I will also say that it is a shame that they are banning the flag and even censoring a TV show because the left is way too oversensitive. (Before anyone calls me a nutty conservative, I don't like the right either.)

To the censorship side, yes, nine people died, it was a tragedy, it should never have happened and it's a time for mourning. However with that said, this is an over the top knee-jerk reaction. You can say "oh boo hoo, a TV show is being censored, well nine people died." all you like but let me tell you something. You're saying we're disrespectful towards the dead because we want to preserve a piece of history and preserve the right to own a piece of cloth. And you think you're not? You are taking advantage of their deaths to push your agenda to censor history and violate the first amendment to a degree where people can't even watch a TV show because "OH! it has a Confederate Flag on the top of a car! Too offensive, get rid of it!" When you take advantage of the dead, you yourself are being disrespectful towards the dead, and I do not tolerate that.

If anyone is outraged by this censorship, I urge you to protest in this fashion. They want to censor the Confederate Flag as most people know it? Fine, just pick up the Stars and Bars instead. No one said anything about banning that flag.

The concept of sarcasm is lost on some of you, isn't it?

Of course the rebel flag didn't kill those people.

The murders are just being used as an excuse for a vocal minority to attack what they erroneously view as a symbol of racism.

To be fair, sarcasm does not translate well on text.

I'm German.  I suppose I could start sporting the swastika and claim that it's a symbol of historical significance to me.  Completely ignoring the associations that most people make with it (and rightly so).  It is a borrowed symbol, after all; it just happened to be adopted by one of the most disgusting people to ever walk the planet.  Hmm...  Reminds me of how the Confederate flag has been flown by these a-holes:

Instead of complaining about political correctness, you could just, Idunno, get with the times.  I don't even have to give a shit about the flag's history; its present ain't too pretty either.

Perhaps I don't really even understand what 'banning' means in this topic? I'm not for banning it to such an extent that it can't even show up in a history textbook (I've never even heard of such a notion being proposed). I have no wish to mess with that... But the flag flying in the South (or anywhere) on government property I can not support.

I think it's a pretty terrible symbol for many, many reasons... But I'm not necessarily for "banning" it. Hey, if someone starts flying that flag, it's an easy way me to know to stay waaaaayyyy far away from them.
